We are taking our niece(5) to WDW. It will be me, DH, DD (11), DH's Mom, DH's Grandma and niece. Will there be a problem at the airport since none of us are the parent?

We always traveled with a a power of attorney from the other childs parents back in the day.

Hi,

You would only encounter a problem if you were to leave the country.
You can check with the airline if you want an exact answer :)

I took my niece to WDW last fall (she was 4, almost 5) and flew SW. No one even questioned us. I did have a notarized letter with me from her parents authorizing the trip and any emergency medical care she might need, just in case.

It is smart to travel with a notarized letter from the parents. While this letter will let anyone who asks know you have permission to have the child in your custody for this trip it will also allow you to obtain medical services for the child in case of an emergency. It is pretty quick to draw up and easy to have notarized. I don't believe the airlines will (or should) give you a problem, but you just never know.

You won't have any problems.

I travel with my neices and my dd's as the solo adult and have never been asked any questions at all. My neices have a different last name and are of a different ethnic background - never a second glance.

Adults 18 and over need id, children may be asked to state their name for the TSA agent checking you prior to the screening area.

OT - but as a pp said the only issue you may encounter is if you need to seek medical attention. A simple for stating that you have permission to authorize medical treatment for xx and a copy of the insurance card is sufficient. You can even find samples online.

Actually they won't even know it isn't your child, how would they? So many people have different last names now that they won't even blink at the different name.

As long as the adults have their ID and everyone has a ticket that is all they really care about.

We travel with our 8 year old grandson fairly frequently and we simply have our daughter write a letter stating he is traveling with us and giving us the authority for any emergency medical treatment, etc. She then has the letter notarized. She also puts her contact info in the letter.

Great! Thanks for your replies. I intended to get a medical POA for her when we go, just in case. Just want to make sure everything is in order before we head out!

Hinestly I dont have much idea about it. it would be better for you that you contant a professinal regarding this matter.

I work for private aviation. We always require a poa for any minor whether for domestic or international travel. We've never had to use it but it is best to be prepared. You never know if there could be an amber alert or a medical issue.
We have the parent give the traveling adult permission for medical decisions, give the child permission to travel with the adult, list travel dates and locations, and contact info for both parents. I googled to find a form to base ours off of.
