We have had these boards for close to 2 years now. For those of you who have been with us for a while you may remember when we couldn't keep more then 6 months worth of posts without having to cut them back.
The time has finally come when we do need to cut back on these boards. Our present database is over 2 Gigs in size with close to 3 million posts. It has become almost impossible to manage and back up.
I will probably do that this weekend. What I am considering at this point is leaving 15 months worth of posts on the trip planning boards, I like the idea of being able to go back and see what happend at "yearly" events and one years worth of posts on the "Just for fun" boards.
Those numbers are not written in stone and if anyone can come up with a strong reason to do it differently I will listen.
Those numbers apply to the "last post" on a thread not to the date the thread was originally started.
This pruning will affect total counts on all the boards. It may end up affecting post counts. If it does I apologize in advance but there's not really a lot we can do.

I hate having to do this!!!!

Gosh Doc, don't feel bad about anything you have to do to improve the boards. We are all just grateful for all you have done to provide all of this for us! Thanks so much. :D

Agreeing with Jillpie here, Doc.

And the logic of trip reports for more than a year makes a lot of sense.

I wouldn't worry about it, especially if board performance can be enhanced!

Thanks for all that you, the other moderators and Pete do to maintain such a great site! :)

These boards are GREAT!!! - Anything that needs to be done to keep them up and running - I could not have found any of the answers to my numerous questions without these boards and the extremely knowledgable people who frequent them! A special thanks to all the moderators/webmasters that keep these boards up and running!

THANK YOU!:D

Prune away!! 2 GIGS is a LOT of space - especially when you have to run backups!!

Thanks for all you do to keep things up and running so well around the DISBOARDS!!

WebmasterAlex may have discovered a solution which won't be quite as harsh and yet still solve our administrative issues.

We'll try to keep everyone posted but, for now, it looks like we have a better option to accomplish our goals. (We may have a way to archive posts without completely losing them.)

Stay Tuned! :)

Doc,

Your efforts (and those of Alex and others) are greatly appreciated. Do what you have to do, and you'll hear no complaints from me.

Perhaps because I don't understand the nature of the operation, I'm not sure why a 2GB database is a problem. You can't buy a hard drive with less than ten times that storage these days. And backing up?! There are many options, including copying to a second internal hard disk, copying to an external (e.g. firewire) hard disk, burning a DVD-ROM, etc. Of course they all cost money...

Here's another big thank you to all of you who do so much to maintain these boards. Your hard work is appreciated.

I agree with the others. Do what must be done to keep the boards running smooth. If there is an alternate plan, that's great. If it turns out that pruning is needed, I agree with the decision to cut the "Just for Fun" boards shorter, as some of them have less historic value.
Doc, I appreciate all the work that you and the other webmasters/moderators do to keep The DIS Boards a fun place.
The Boards have actually enhanced my DVC membership....Thanx again.....

Goodness, don't feel bad! I know for me, I do not want to read any post that over a week old.....you could cut back to leaving on 2 months worth of data and it wouldn't affect me in any way.

Any information that I need to keep, I can copy and keep it on my own computer.

Thanks for this site!

I have to agree with everyone else. Thanks to all those involved with keeping DIS up and running every day. Do whatever you have to. I don't know what I would do without this board! Annmarie
