Blue Ridge Parkway/Biltmore/Shelby, NC

I live in Johnson City, specifically Boones Creek, small world!

That is so cool! My ex's grandmother's maiden name is Crouch, and she married a Galloway. Those used to be very common names around there; not so sure any more.

I remember the first time he took me there he pointed in the distance and said, "See that ridge? That was deeded to my family by King George." All I could think was "Holy cr*p!" I had no information whatsoever about my ancestors.

I love me some Dr. Enuf! Enuf is Enough! :goodvibes

My father in-law lives in West Jefferson

Funny you should mention West Jefferson; that was the other place in NC we could stay for 7500 points/night! I couldn't get my husband on board with going to a cheese factory for a romantic trip. :rotfl:

That is VERY funny!! Just went to the cheese factory the last time we were up there. It's great with some great cheeses, etc. but not the Biltmore. Of course , it is not far at all to the Parkway or Boone / Blowing Rock (where the outlets are which is where I have to go when visiting my FIL). I'm trying to figure out where the hotel would be in W. Jefferson. There can't be many. haha. You could have also gone to Shatley Springs there (a family style rest. , which is good but I don't think as good as it used to be when I was little). Or Daniel Boone Inn is done the same as well. Grandfather Mountain is not that far of a drive either . So, there are lots of things to do around W. Jefferson that aren't that far but not much in the town itself. Beautiful scenery though.

When I realized my points were about to expire and I started planning this trip, there was/is a Hampton Inn being built in West Jefferson that was offering 7500 points/night as an introductory thing. But every time I would check back they still weren't taking reservations, and finally I had to move on and choose someplace else. That, and my husband wasn't jazzed over the cheese factory.

I have no idea if that Hampton Inn ever opened!

You'll enjoy the drive that you are hoping for. We lived outside Shelby for awhile. The ride between Shelby and Biltmore is amazing - have fun! My favorite part is driving through there right before and during daybreak!

:wave2:Welcome to the Dis!!!pixiedust:

Thanks for your reply. We're staying in Shelby because it's free. If we had to pay for lodging we couldn't go. Biltmore tickets are ridiculous! I have a very fuel efficient car so gas really isn't a problem. I'm hoping that with the scenery and the fact that we're alone, travel time won't matter. :lovestruc My husband is definitely a getting-there-is-half-the-fun type person.

Alternatively, we could just go straight to Shelby and just have one trip to Biltmore and back, but then we would miss out on the Blue Ridge Parkway and we really want to experience that.

It's really a two part question - does 80 miles on the BRP sound like fun and doable in ~6 hours, and will the drive from/to Shelby & Biltmore take very long and if so, is it at least a pretty drive? Looks like we'll go near Lake Lure.

Yes you can get from Asheville to Shelby in an hour and a half. Where are you planning on staying in Shelby? There are a couple of hotels here in Shelby that I would not stay at for any amount of money. Lake Lure and Chimney Rock are about 30-45 mins from downtown Shelby. The Blue Ridge Parkway is beautiful.

Have a wonderful time! We were in Bristol, TN in March and decided to drive the extra hour to visit Asheville & Biltmore for a couple of days (thanks to help from my DIS friends!). We were going to take the BRP on the way home, but when we stopped at the info center they showed us how many spots were closed due to rock slides and storm damage, and we opted not to (didn't want to add any more time to our 11 hour drive!). Hopefully you get to Biltmore in a safe and timely manner! I was bummed to see it's free for Mom's on Mother's Day and free for Dad's on Father's Day and I can't get back there for those days - would have loved to see the flowers in bloom (it snowed the first day we were there!).

Enjoy!

Thanks for the good wishes! I'm pretty sure my husband is not going to want to leave. I love the whole experience, but gardening is really his thing.

As a native NC'er, I would never ever take the BRP for *travel*. It is only good for sight seeing. If that is what you want to do, then it's a great option... but in order to get to Biltmore, it's not a great option.

Also - while you're visiting the estate, if you can swing taking the roof top tour, do so. It is absolutely worth every penny!

I don't believe that Hampton Inn in West Jefferson is open yet...

We're staying at the Hampton Inn - keeping my fingers crossed!

Thanks for the info. We so excited to be going somewhere alone!

I think you will be alright staying at the Hampton Inn. I haven't stayed there myself but I have heard good things about it. It is right by the mall and the Dennys resturant. There is also a Zaxbys and Ruby Tuesday right there. Also the movie theater is right there also. Hope you enjoy your trip to my home town. But while you are here please don't call 911. I would hate to have to take a call from a fellow Diser.

We were down there this past fall. We stayed at the Comfort Suites in Cherokee we left Cherokee right after breakfast and got to Biltmore when they opened. Make sure you have an assigned entry time to the Estate or you may not get into the 'house' after 3PM. The Biltmore is awsome and is worth the pricey tag on it. It was our 7 yr olds pick of places to see on that vacation.
Your ride on the BRP will take a couple hours if you do plan on stopping at some of the pull offs to take in the views. We took the highway and it was close to 1.5 hours or so from Cherokee to Ashville. BRP is south of the highway closed from the major rock slide so you should be ok.
Sorry I do not know much about the cities East of Ashville so not sure about that drive.

Your trip sounds fun!

But I didn't know HHonors points expired!! :scared1: Are you sure, and where do you go in your account to check?

Thanks, we're really looking forward to it. Saturday morning my daughter left with friends for the beach and my younger son left with his grandpa for camping. My oldest son no longer lives at home, so it's like a "responsibility vacation" before our getaway. :goodvibes

I've had the Hhonors account for many years but don't travel nearly as much as I used to, so the points have been mostly just sitting there. With no activity, the points do expire but I think it has to be a year or maybe two with no activity. I could buy some points, which is considered activity, but I really just want to use my points and move on. I no longer have the credit card that earned Hhonors points (divorce) and in general do not use credit, so without travel or points coming in the account is dead.

Thanks everyone for your good wishes! I'll be back with a report soon!

This is good information to know! Hopefully the hubs and I won't get so kinky that we need 911. :rotfl2:

We're back from a wonderful trip!

We were an hour or so behind when I hoped we would leave because we decided at the last minute to take some food and a house key by my inlaws - no biggie. My husband insisted on driving the entire trip, which made it even better for me since I have a 50 mile commute every weekday and I hate driving. We had fast food on the go for lunch - nothing memorable but not bad, either - and got on the BRP just above Cherokee, NC. It was so much fun!!!! We clearly don't get out much because just being that high up was really, really freaky in a good way. We rolled down our windows so we could let the clouds go ~through~ the car in some spots. LOL We were definitely high on nature's majesty! As expected, the BRP was closed after about halfway on our route, and we took the detour but decided when the time came (to go one way toward Asheville or another way straight to Shelby and our hotel) to go to Shelby and just see Biltmore in one day (the following day). That was a good decision, because although we knew the forecast called for rain (and it did sleet on us very briefly in a place or two way high up) we were in and out of cloudy weather most of the day but no downpours. We figured out later it must have mostly been storming down below us or just ahead of us, because the lady who checked us in at the Hampton Inn said it hailed at her house earlier in the day, so much that it looked like it had snowed. We somehow missed all the bad weather!

We asked the front desk clerk to recommend a fish place and she gave us directions to Fisherman's Feast in Shelby - kind of an odd place but the food was delicious! We found our way easily there and back, waddled back to our room and turned in early.

The Hampton Inn was just great - clean and good smelling. A little road noise in the night but nothing awful. The hot breakfast was OK, nothing wrong with the taste but not what the hubs wanted so we went elsewhere the next morning. Then we rode into Asheville to Biltmore Estate. I had already been but it was still amazing to see it again, and my husband was awed at the house, naturally. We toured the house, bought some snacks, and made a 5PM reservation for the Bistro. Then we meandered through the gardens and trails, sat in the sun by the lake, and moved our car over to the Antler Hill Farm (or something like that) area. We did the free wine tasting, looked in the shops, looked at the Winery exhibit and the Vanderbilt exhibit, and by then it was time to go eat. :cool1: We both had beef - I had the special, which was supposed to be "heart of ribeye" and looked very suspciously like my husband's filet mignon, for a better price, which was cool. We both had different versions of the purple potato - his was hash, mine was simply sliced thick and cooked, both were good and we felt oh-so-sophisticated eating purple potatoes . . . :rotfl: I had spinach and true baby carrots atop a spring pea (think baby food . . . or poop) mash. I can't remember what else my husband had but I do remember watching him patiently pick out pearl onions and red peppers from the hash. ;) He had cream brulee and I had chocolate pot de creme for dessert. Everything we had was sublime. :lovestruc

Then it was back to Shelby, because we are old folks and like going to bed early. My husband said it wasn't a bad drive at all going back and forth between Asheville & Shelby and he wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

The next day was our departure day and I told the hubs that our route home was his choice. We were very close to the SC border and we could have easily dropped down into SC, caught I-85 and would have made it home in just a few hours, tops. Or we could wander around SC on our way back. He, however, wanted to go back the way we came. Being nature boy, he realized that every trip over those mountains was a different one due to the weather and he wanted to see it under different conditions, because today was a beautiful, sunshiny day. So that's what we did! We just reversed our steps from the first day, stopping at Ihop for breakfast (delicious and a steal at $4.99 each). Just as he said, seeing the mountains on a sunny day was a totally different experience. At one point we saw a small white leader plane and behind it was a gray C-130 Hercules that apparently was dumping/dusting something but it got SO CLOSE to us and the ground for that matter! :scared1: That giant plane in such a small space (the valleys/between the mountains) and going so slow was amazing to see! :woohoo:

We ate a very late lunch at Pizza Inn in Cherokee (fantastic, just plain ol' pizza) and got home safely by late afternoon.

My husband was indeed amazed by the time it takes to travel in the mountains. On the BRP on the way home we saw a sign that indicated there were restrooms 7 miles ahead and he said, "Well, that may take a couple of hours!" :rotfl: Imagine my surprise when we stopped for me to use the facilities and they turned out to be basically very nice brick outhouses. Just a toilet seat over a hole. I decided I could wait until we got off the BRP. :rolleyes1

We had a blast! Thanks everyone for your helpful hints and suggestions! You guys are the best! :goodvibes

Glad you enjoyed your trip. I love the fish from Fisherman's Feast. The bulding used to be a country club type place and used to be called the Vaxhall. That is where all the schools would hold the proms. I am also glad that you didn't have to call 911 while you were here. Even if you had I think you would have missed me. I have been off of work for a week. Tonight is my first night back. My hubby and I went to the Thunder Beach Bike Rally in Panama City Beach Fl with the bike club. We got home early Monday morning. We had a great time and can't wait for next year.

Glad you had some time off, too! The thing about the Fisherman's Feast is that when we drove up we saw the cool old house, and then sitting in the dining room we realized we were in a cement block room, not in the house at all. That must be a giant facility. The food was fantastic and the portions were huge, and the prices were great!
