I've never bought from them but I wanted to share that a friend of mine recently divorced and got to keep all the jewelry. He didn't have any interest in keeping his ex wife's jewelry so he contacted the original stores to discuss selling it back. The local in person jewelry stores offer him 10 cents on the dollar while blue Nile offered him 70 cents. He said he will never buy from a local store again.

:confused3why would a local jeweler be interested in buying back old jewelry? Unless it was estate jewelry? Why buy some one elses old jewelry, that you will have to in most cases clean and reset.

did he think after years of wear he was going to get full price back?

Even when you sell gold its not at full price. you can bargain back and forth to get the best price but....

My engagement and wedding rings are from here and I love them! I also bought my husband's wedding ring from BN. I've had my e-ring almost 3 years and Ihave no complaints.

Also, my husband got it appraised right after purchase and it did appraise for more than he paid!

I purchased a ring from blue nile but only because it was a sale ring and it was convenient BUT I'm from NYC. LOL, we have whole entire sections of the city dedicated to Jewelers so rarely do I see jewelry on line that I can't get a better price on.

My engagement ring I probably would not have purchased on line, but I got married 30 years ago, lol there was no on-line

My cousin was living in NYC when she got engaged. She told me that she bought her engagement ring (with diamond) in the Manhattan Diamond District and she got a much better deal than in any retail store. I heard that maybe 90% of the diamonds that are imported into the US go through Manhattan's Diamond District. I've also heard that it's mostly orthodox and Hasidic Jewish operations. It also surprises me that there are few reported instances of robberies, with dealers known to carry millions worth of diamonds on their person without any security.

As for Blue Nile - my wife's sister in law ordered from them. For some reason they had it sent to our house and we got a look before forwarding it to them. It was a loose stone with one of major certifications. Seemed really nice. It was placed in a cheap setting, but it was sold as a loose stone. The setting was probably to reduce the chance of losing it.

You have to be savvy if you shop the diamond district. There might be deals to be had - if you know what you're looking for. If you DON'T know what to look for, you'll be taken for a fool. I can't remember which channel (ABC, NBC, CBS) did an expose piece on the NY diamond district talking about how the actual quality of the stone almost never matched what it was being sold as. For example, they market a stone as say, a G, VS1 but in reality it's an J, SI2 (a BIG difference). That ALSO applies for any mall or local store. Look for stones that are GIA or AGS certified - you can trust those certs. EGL, IGI, etc. are bunk.

I was actually surprised they took back old jewelry as well, but the shops he spoke with did and had a significantly different price offer than Blue Nile. He was just very impressed with Blue Nile's customer service and willingness to keep their customers satisfied.

This thread is five years old, I think; I don't know if that matters.
