Blue Card/DVC-Y Question

I've got a question about blue card status; we currently have 200 direct points at VGF that give us "DVC-Y" status and we are thinking about a smaller purchase (100-125 points) at Riviera at some point in the next year or so. What happens to our status when VGF expires, assuming we still have the RIV points? We would not have enough direct points at RIV for direct benefits, so would we lose our status? I realize this is a long ways off but as we consider another direct purchase, it's come up in my mind.

Yes, you would lose your status, as you would no longer have a qualifying set of contracts in your membership. But I would not buy extra points for just that reason, unless you genuinely believe you can use them yourself.

That's what I thought, and I don't think the loss of status for a few years would persuade us to buy more points just to keep the benefits.

They go by qualifications at time purchased. iirc RIV openend with 100pts to qualify BlueCard, so people who bought back then would continue to keep member benefits via that purchase alone for as long as they still actively owned the points. Buying 100pts today would be different.

Another thing that dictates against buying enough new points from DVD just to maintain your status after VGF expires is the fact that VGF will not expire until 2064, 39 years from now. Current rules applicable to member benefits, or even the existence of member benefits, could change before then, e.g., one can speculate that even if all the same member benefits exist 40 years from now, DVD may at some point start charging members extra money to get them.

I wouldn’t pay any bother to the six years between the contracts. As everyone else has mentioned, you have no idea what DVC is gonna look like 10 years from now never mind 30. If you wanna start trying RIV even with the PV rate it’s gonna equal VGF so you’ll be able to do the same weeks. If anything I would do a 50 point add on at VGF

I wouldn't buy direct for the sake of a 4 year potential "direct member benefit" for six years starting in 2064...

Especially if you're planning on using the RIV points at RIV... (which it sounds like you are since they would be restricted resale points).

But... to play devils advocate... if you want to use the points at all new resorts, it might be easier to have all direct points...

I think the OP Is considering a direct purchase, but one that is less than the current Blue Card threshold of 150 points.

Yes, that’s what we are considering. We have a 160pt SSR resale contract that we will probably sell and I was thinking of downsizing but getting more direct unrestricted points.

Good advice, agree with you

If you are buying now the incentives bump up dramatically ($20) from 100 points to 150 points. 150 points also unlocks the ability to do the magical beginnings to bring your price down.

This would also give you peace of mind for those extra 6 years after VGF expires

We are Canadian and can’t take advantage of MB, unfortunately.
