BLT - can I request a non-vulture view?

Okay...we just became BLT members last May and I just booked our first trip for January 2011, lake view.

And I was looking at all of the room pics, and there were quite a few rooms with the trees outside covered in turkey vultures. I am SCARED TO DEATH of big birds :scared1::scared1:

I am not one of those people who are afraid of everything but big birds and tissue in my mouth are my two.

Do you think that I could request a non-bird view or will they laugh me out of the hotel?? I will probably not get one wink of sleep, and I am sure
that my family will get a kick out of tormenting me about it the entire week!

go with a standard view - they are closer to the bottom of the resort and these birds generally like the heights - that say - does not mean you will not run across one or two.

plus don't think they are there all the time.

Not sure about the bird view, what about egrets? I know when I look out onto the trees to the left of wLV the white egrets are all over. I have never seen a bird get close to the resort though, so that might help a bit. they tend to stay in the trees or fly overhead. You won't find one on your balcony if that is what you are afraid of.
As to the tissue in the mouth.... I can feel your pain. I absolutely HATE to see anyone with paper in their mouth. My boys will chew paper just to scheve me out. I have to turn my head and cover my ears, it just disgusts me. I had a tooth pulled once and they actually wanted me to bite on a gauze. I couldn't do it, had to take that thing out of my mouth, I would rather bleed to death.

I don't think that Disney knows where the birds will roost.

A year ago, we noticed hundreds of black birds hanging around the Contemporary and BLT.

All I could think of is will our dues have to increase to pay for the poop clean up. :goodvibes

:scared1: I'm super afraid of large birds to. Deathly so. It almost caused me to cancel our coveted reservation at BLT last Christmas. Just as I was feeling really smug about getting BLT at the 7 mos window, I saw a post about the turkey vultures. I began obsessing so hard about the turkey vultures at BLT. I had crazy nightmares about them. I pestered my DH about them. I did google searches about them and read threads again and again just working myself up into a lather. Fast forward to our trip, I spent 7 nights there and didn't run into any. We had a standard view and it was on the first floor. They do fly high above the building, so I would just avoid the upper floors.:wizard:

We had a stay at BLT over July 4th week, I did not find the turkeys to be a problem, there are a lot of them but they keep to them selves. :thumbsup2

What I did find to be the big problem were the large black birds, they would sit on top of the umbrellas and then swoop down, if someone left the table with food on it. One day while having lunch (by the pool) I was getting ready to put a french fry in my mouth and the large black bird took it out of my hand, I could fell his feathers against my face, it was just awful, had the heebie jeebies all day.

Thanks everyone. It sounds like I will be okay if we have a lower floor. I am not too bad if they are outside and away from me, it really only bothers me if they are near me or in big groups. My family thinks its hysterical!!

If any bird swooped down and grabbed a french fry out of my hand, I would be traumatized for life. No outdoor eating for us I guess.

And as for the tissue thing? I am right there with you, Mickey 527, on the gauze thing at the dentist. I just cannot do it. They actually use this gummy stuff instead. :thumbsup2

We were at BLT last summer and had a lake view - it was a view of the tennis courts and MK. We had a vulture that like to sit on the lamp post near our room. We would joke with my son that he was waiting for him to fall off of the balcony. (there is no actual risk of falling off of the balcony -- I promise.) I never noticed any on the pool side of the resort.

I know how bad things can get when you have a fear that others don't understand (I have one related to cats). What I would do is put in a request for a lower floor. I would say you have a great chance of getting it as most are requesting higher floors. Or, as a PP suggested, try to change to SV room which seem to be pretty much on floors 1 - 3, with a few on floors 4 and 5.

We were at BLT from 6/14 - 6/23 and had a vulture view room:rotfl:. Anyhow, they seemed to just be there early in the morning and stayed a good distance from the building, they really seem to like the tennis court so maybe avoid that area.

We had an 8th floor BLT LV on the Contemporary pool side last year. We didn't notice the vultures at all from our room. I think this side is generally safe (particularly if you are not on the high floors).

From the pool area, we did notice them high above. I think anything on the inner C will likely be able to see them perched on top of BLT.

Anything on the tennis court side will likely have views of vultures since there are some good trees for them to perch on.

As others mentioned, anything away from the upper floors and the vultures should not be too close.

We had a LV at BLT with a bunch of swampy trees blocking our view to the lake (partially). It was June 2010. We didn't see any vultures.

LOL. If you call and tell them you're afraid of the vultures it'll give them something to talk about during their lunch break. Do it. Then get back on here and tell us how it goes, mkay? :lmao:

Ok, a few things about our 1BR (#7612) lake view room (loved it btw!)...

We were on the tennis court side, pretty high up (6th floor). We faced the tennis courts, with MK right to our left & the lake on the right. The trees next to the lake were much LOWER than us & the vultures were all over them. I felt safe, as we were so high up and away. I think on the lower floors right below us, they would be right out your window.

About the pool, yes there are blackbirds there that NOT AFRAID of people at all. We watched them hopping all over tables, poke their beaks into unattended Dorito bags, and one even tipped over someone's unattended drink...spilling it on deck and stuck his beak right in, speared the lime, & flew off with it in his beak!

We watched one person eating Fritos tip the bag back against his mouth to get the crumbs and a bird swooped down and took the bag!

Lesson learned...eat your food quickly!!

I would think if you had an MK or Theme Park view as it's now called that you'd be pretty much vulture free. There aren't any tall trees on that side and I didn't see any birds roosting on CR. The only birds I saw were so high up that when viewed with my 300 mm camera lens they were still tiny specs in the sky.
