Blizzard!

Is everyone in the midwest getting ready for this winter storm that's coming? :sad2: I'm hoping it's not going to be as bad as our news stations are making it out to be. Some highlights:

6-10+" of snow
Winds gusting to 50mph
Blizzard conditions - difficult to travel
Road closures probable, scattered power outages

Here's the story:

DES MOINES (AP) - Forecasters say light snow that fell across Iowa overnight is just a warm-up for what's to come this week.

The National Weather Service says most of Iowa saw 1 to 2 inches of snow by early Monday.

A major winter storm will push into the state Tuesday and Wednesday. Heavy snow - up to a foot is possible - will be followed by strong winds. The system will spread across Kansas and Nebraska by Monday night and then push into Iowa.

Heavy snow is expected on Tuesday. Winds will become stronger, creating blizzard conditions by early Wednesday.

A blizzard watch has been issued for eastern Iowa on Tuesday into Wednesday, with a winter storm watch for western and central Iowa for late Monday into Wednesday.

I work 3:30pm-12am on Tuesday, so I'm hoping it won't be TOO bad so I can at least make it home from work.

Ugh. I'm sick of winter already. Anyone else?

Hi Ashley!

Yup, it's coming. Just a taste of it this morning, but all in all, we've been pretty lucky this year. It's December 7 already, and really no bad weather yet. I just hope it is not a year like last year - remember, when we seemed to get 3 to 4 inches of snow every 3 days?:sad2:

I remember some significant October snowstorms in the past around here.

I'll bet there will be a rush on bread, milk, and eggs at Hy-Vee this evening!

Stay safe, and be careful!

On a brighter note - this weather makes Miami and the ORANGE BOWL on January 5 look that much better, doesn't it?

Here in wisconsin they are saying 12 inches of snow with blizzard conditions!!! Yuck...not looking forward to it...but I wont be going anywhere.....my youngest DD 4, has the H1N1 virus and Dr. said at the ER on saturday that we can't go anywhere for 5-7 days.

Yep, we're watching it in northern MN.

we are expecting to get nailed too. Of course, I'm supposed to take DD to a specialist on Wednesday, we had to wait awhile for this appt and it doesn't look like we will be making it :(

I hope it calms down by Thursday, DH is taking the day off work and we are doing our annual "finish up the Christmas shopping" day. It's fun to get out without the kiddos and have a nice lunch, etc. Guess we can postpone to next week if necessary though.

And yes, Deb, Miami sounds really nice about now! I was there over New Year's many years ago and still remember getting on the plane in Cedar Rapids at a balmy -7 degrees, and landing in Miami at midnight. it was 83 degrees and raining, warm and humid and totally unlike Iowa :)

I'm looking forward to it and not worrying about it. It's what happens when you live in the midwest in the winter. I just feel lucky its 12/7 and we have grass on the ground still. Winter is much easier to handle when its 3 months vs 4..

We're watching it here in NE WI, too. :) The forecast calls for 9+ inches of snow.

I went grocery shopping yesterday, so we're all set that way. I'm just worried about activities and DH driving to and from work on Wed.

Ugh, yes, last year was bad. I'm leaving on the 17th to go visit my parents in Florida for a week and I couldn't be more ready to get outta here. :goodvibes

I'll be one of the crazies at Hy-Vee tonight after work! I just realized we have NO food, so if we get snowed in.. it won't be pretty.

Are you going to the Orange Bowl? I'm considering making a 2nd trip to see my parents in January just so I have an excuse to get down there for it. :thumbsup2

Unfortunately, no. Our son is still in high school here, and classes resume on January 4, so we will be watching the Hawkeyes beat Georgia Tech (hopefully) on TV.

We're expecting a mess up here on Wednesday, I feel your pain!

In all the bowl selection discussion, people always say that Iowa "travels well", in that we bring a lot of fans. Well, of course! It's Iowa! We'll take any excuse to go somewhere warm and sunny in January!! :thumbsup2
