blenders! vent!

So I'm making deserts for our Christmas party tonight and my old blender cruds out on me. It's probably 5 years old, and cheap, so whatever. I pack the kids up and go to the PX. The only one they have is 119.00. Ummm.... no. So then we go across town to walmart, and I get a digital GE one. Nice, right? Fifty bucks. Get it home and turn the power on... I haven't even put anything in it or started it... and it starts smoking!! UGH!!! I guess this desert just wasn't meant to be!!! So I get out my OLD trusty handmixer and do it that way. I should have tried them to begin with!

Just needed to vent because my DD's just don't get it.

I feel your pain. The sad thing is... My parents 50 year old Waring Blender that they received as a wedding present still works. We have a 20+ old microwave that still works, but you can no longer read the time or power level display. So, we're looking at spending over a $100 for a replacement that will probably last two years.

I have an electric skillet that was probably made in the late 1950's. I bought it at a garage sale for $.50 in 1985 when I graduated from high school. It works great! I don't know what I'll do when it finally passes on. They don't make 'em like this anymore!

I have an Oster two-speed blender I bought for under $20 (new) in 1968 and it still works fine.

I will never buy another ge appliance. I just needed a new blender jar because the plastic on the bottom cracked. Everything else was great about the blender--good power, nice heavy glass jar, etc. After doing research I found out that Ge doesn't sell replacement parts--you have to buy a whole new blender. I thought surely I could just replace the glass jar. I also found out that many other people have had issues with Ge appliances.

I won't get another GE appliance either, especially when I haven't even used it and its smoking!

I'm with you on GE appliances...I've had too many washers and dryers and microwaves which break way too fast made by GE...never again.

Now, Oster is the way to go on a blender. They blend very nicely and I've never had a problem, and every parent I know has an Oster that is like 20 years old and still works. The metal on metal I think is the key.

I've found that it's worth investing the money on a good blender. I used to go through a blender every few years, then I finally got a good one and I love it. I think it's a KitchenAid and it's so sturdy. Love it.

--Another vote for Oster. I gave my daughter my old 60's Oster that worked fine and got myself a new one. Love it.
