OK - over the weekend I made several bleach pen "Mickey Head" T-shirts. I purchased the 5 for $10 T-shirts from Joanne Fabric in several colors. I made two circle templates- one larger and one smaller, and drew the classic Mickey outline with chalk on each shirt.
Then, with the bleach pen, I drew spirals inside each circle and let sit so the bleach could take effect. When I thought enough time had passed (about 10 minutes for each shirt) I put each shirt in the kitchen sink and used the sprayer to wash out the bleach. The results varied widely:
Turquoise and raspberry colored shirts: Took the bleach really fast and the lines spread out about 3 times wider than what I drew on the shirt
Bright red - Was just about right in 10 minutes. Got a light red/ pink color where the bleach was.
Burgundy - After 10 minutes ended up with a dark, rusty color outline that was a couple shades lighter than the original burgundy.
Royal blue - didn't take the bleach too well. Am going to go over it again and see what happens.
Bright orange - you can barely make out a faint outline where the bleach was. It is so negligible that I'm not going to rebleach because I really think I'd eat through the fabric before I'd see a good contrast.
Yellow - it did bleach but very little contrast. My DD is going to go over the pattern with fabric paint.
I just thought it was interesting how the various colors were SO different with the bleach. I did wash & dry all shirts (no fabric softener) before starting.
