Biscuit's Grand Adventure 2 - Adventures in Opposite - 12/3 Another Update!

I am two weeks late to this update (ok more but who is counting). I have been studiously avoiding most updates on my phone as well, it just makes for frustration on multiple levels. Either I think I posted, and I haven't as posting from the phone is painful or I get frustrated as I can't see picture heavy updates well. Or I know I'll want to make lots of comments and the phone is not great for that.

Anywhoo. What a wonderful wonderful surprise and I am so glad you pulled it off.

Major score on the upgrade, we loved that view, we were on the opposite side. One of our favorite balcony views of all time, just something magical about it.

You did good Matt.

REAL good!

So happy to have found your report. What a great beginning. Looking forward to it! Thanks for sharing!
:welcome: Thanks for stopping by and checking in!

I read your epic GB Adventure several years ago when I was new to the Boards and loved it! That was the reason that I started browsing the TR boards. I'm so excited to read along with this family adventure now.

What an truly thoughtful surprise you planned for Lady Biscuit to book her favorite resort. Glad you pulled off that one without a hitch. :)
:welcome: Great to have you back for round two! Hopefully things should move a little more quickly now.

Ahhhhh...you have reach 901 Timberline Drive. I know that address well. Gigantic fireplace. Colorado slate floor. Indian tempe chandeliers. Mission style furniture. You can't get better than that.
Indeed! The place is amazing!

They had the best CM I have ever encounter. Becky and Kash just to name a few. The Kahula chocolate cake is one of my favorite dessert at Whispering Canon Cafe and not to mention their unlimited milkshake can take you to whole different dimension.
I didn't try that particular dessert...now I'm sad I didn't.

I hope the Biscuit family enjoy the WL as much as I do. The surprise element looks sounds a precious moment. Looks like there are still a few more trick up your sleeve. You are off to a great start. I can feel this is going to be an epic trip already. :woohoo:
Loved it! I would so go back in heartbeat!

Just got back and I am happy to report the lobby looks wonderful.

I love that you kept that surprise all the way to the stop sign.

You got a GREAT view!!!!! So happy Lady biscuit was shocked!!!
Welcome back! Glad to hear they finally got the lobby back together again.

Hi Greatbiscuit!

It's great to finally see another trip report from you! Can't wait to see more fabulous pics. I too have gotten a bit lazy with lugging the DSLR to WDW. I've been using a more compact micro 4/3 camera in addition to a point and shoot and my ubiquitous iPhone.
I leave for WDW in less than 2 weeks. Super excited! I'm impressed you kept such a fantastic surprise from your family so well. I'd be bursting at the seams. Their reaction was well worth it though!

Can't wait to read more!
:weclome: Thanks for joining in on another one! Hope you have a great trip!

WOW! What a view. It is great when prayers are answered!
:welcome: It was a great view and a great blessing.

Love me some Biscuit family adventures!! Your pre trip report reminds me of how much I enjoyed reading your trip report!!

Looking forward to more!!!
:welcome: Glad you stopped back by! I appreciate you posting to say howdy!

Hi GB!

I did finally make it over. Surely school starting wasn't a factor in that...;)

WHAT A ROOM LOCALE! NIIIIICE!
Well howdy there and :welcome: I appreciate you dropping by, I know you've had a crazy life since returning to the motherland.

Hey Cynthia! Glad you dropped by this morning. I hear you on the time. It seems like every time I THINK I'm going to get to read / post, something comes up. And the phone is definitely a frustrating platform to try to post from.

Well howdy there and :welcome: I appreciate you dropping by, I know you've had a crazy life since returning to the motherland.

Crazy is certainly putting it mildly. School, house, weddings, you name it. But we make the most of each day. :thumbsup2

I love having these few weeks before school starts. Gives me time to start planning my trip. Two years away. After I finish. Never too early I say. ;)

First, my sincere and deep apologies for the long absence. Life=Crazy. I will spare you details as it is not really "on topic"; with this forum, but the good news is things are settling down a bit.

Thanks for sticking around! Enjoy!

Previously on Biscuit's Grand Adventure, plans were concealed, surprises revealed, and a Delawarean made me giddy.

Having stood on the balcony of our Wilderness Lodge room and admired our courtyard view a bit, I was now compelled to head back inside and get down to business. There was not only lunch to think about, but also the FastPass Plus reservations we had at Epcot later that evening. The girls were eager to meet up with their cousins, and commandeering First Lady Biscuit's cell phone, called and asked them to come check out the room. While those communications were underway, I declared the procurement of our remaining belongings to be our top priority. I called down to Bell Services and asked them to send up our colossal cart O' stuff, and settled in with some Resort TV to await its arrival.

The next few minutes were spent texting back and forth with Nick and Tammy, uploading our room view to Instagram, a bit more room exploring, and some TV tuning.

(iPhone Instagram Upload)

Before long, a knock at the door signaled that our bags had arrived. After tipping the bell services guy, I kept the door open for Nick and Tammy & crew who were heading down our way. All four cousins fell to whooping and hugging and having themselves a full blown hootenanny. They didn't stay too long as they had to go and fetch their own luggage, so we bid them a temporary farewell and commenced to organizing.

IMG_6497_zps22928341.jpg

We did some unpacking, some stashing and some stowing, grabbed what we needed for the evening, invoked the balcony as a sunscreen application zone, and took a final gander at our digs. Smiling again at being here, in this amazing place and in this amazing room, I shut the door and we headed downstairs for lunch at Roaring Fork.

We arrived around the same time as Nick and Tammy's gang, and found that they wound up with an upgrade of their own...bunk beds. (They were staying on the fifth floor of the main lobby above Whispering Canyon.) Double upgrade celebrations commenced as we headed inside to order us some chow.

IMG_0723651x800_zpsa14190e0.jpg

By this point it was around 3 P.M. and we were more than a little hungry. After perusing the offerings, I'm fairly certain that we all went with flatbreads. (Though I am forced to confess that I don't recall what all Nick's crew ordered.) All I know is, The Biscuits Four chowed down on flatbreads, drinks, and cookies. After a long drive and exciting check in, it truly hit the spot.

IMG_6510_zps1ceb8553.jpg

Sidebar - I didn't snap a huge amount of food pics this time around. I can't really say why. I just didn't.

We ate fairly quickly, and soon it was time to part ways for the remainder of the evening. Nick's crew (all of whom were on the Disney Dining Plan) was heading to Chef Mickey's. I had pondered joining them in the months leading up to our excursion, but I just wasn't up to paying for it out of pocket. Don't get me wrong, I love Parm taters, but I don't love them to the tune of two Benjamins.

Plus I can make them at home.

And have.

Instead, I was taking my crew to Epcot for some rides, Illuminations, and the second and final big surprise that I had in store. But that's getting ahead of myself.

Passing back through the lobby, I noticed more of the construction going on at the Wilderness Lodge. I had been in such a room-seeing swoon on my way through the first time that I had completely missed it. The fountain was still walled off, as was the outside area between the pool and the back of the lodge. The construction theme would be a constant companion the entire trip.

For reasons unknown, I felt compelled to drive to Epcot for the night. One would think three days in the van would have been enough, but apparently one would be wrong. (This would lead to more adventures later that evening.) We headed down the hill, piled back into the Blue Beast, and were soon on our way.

As we drove past the Polynesian Resort, the construction frenzy was once again fully on display. I drove in and out of our resort at least a dozen times on this trip, and on nearly every one, I wound up stopping in front the Polynesian for either construction vehicles or backed up traffic. After swinging a loop around the outside of the Magic Kingdom Parking lot, I heard my GPS say something that would become a recurring source of humor to me. "Proceed to Ep-kit Drive and exit right towards Ep-kit."

For pretty much the rest of the trip, Ep-Kit found its way into my vacation vernacular. "Proceed to Ep-Kit Drive and exit right towards Ep-Kit," was announced when we left every attraction that evening.

We arrived in the Epcot parking lot in short order, and after finding a berth, we discovered the tram was broken down. We were a good ways back and our journey to the gates began what come to be known as "The Night of Excessive Ambulation."

We were soon approaching this and my excitement level was beginning to soar.

Our first park on our first day.

Oh yes friends, life was pretty good at that moment.

We made it through bag check fairly easily and headed inside.
Our first FP+ reservation of the evening was for Spaceship Earth. The standby line was 25 min at that point of the day, signaling the type of crowds we would be dealing with for the remainder of the week. We headed to the FP entrance, held up our Magic Bands, and got our first flashing green Mickey Head of the trip.

I think I felt my spleen flutter.

There was not any sort of line at the top of the ramp and aside from pausing for First Lady Biscuit to take a picture of the girls, we never stopped walking until we got on.

(Phone Pic from FLB)

Tracy and Hailee boarded first and Tahlia and I were right behind them.

We had a lovely tour of mankind's storied and hairy history before exiting back to our own timeline safe and sound. I didn't take any photos inside because I had managed to get all of the way into the park before realizing my camera was not in the camera bag. (Hence all the cell phone pics above and below.)

I had taken it out and worn it on my neck at the Wilderness Lodge and rather than putting it back in the bag, I stuck it in the console when we got in the van to drive over. I did however record the audio on the ZoomH4n, but I can't figure a way to share it that works well. If you MUST listen to the Spaceship Earth loop to properly be in the Ep-kit mood, I recommend D-Cot for your aural pleasure.

After spending a few moments farting around in the exit area, I headed over to guest services to get our ticket upgrade completed.

Once again I struck out. I had made the mistake of sending the girls to use the facilities while I did the upgrade, and the CM needed all four Magic Bands.

This was now four times I had tried to upgrade our tickets and couldn't. I have never had such a difficult time giving money to Disney.

The girls were eager to ride something else, so I postponed our upgrade and we headed over to attraction number two. Next on our list was the merry old land of Mission Space. My last encounter with this attraction nearly ended in disaster when I foolishly decided to ride the orange side twice in a row. I wasn't sure how everyone would handle this one, (including myself) so we headed into the green side as an introduction to the place. (We walked straight through the queue and right into the briefing room.) I was put in charge of hypersleep. A task I hope I have avoided repeating in the telling of this tale.

IMG_0727_zps8c2d447d.jpg

The girls really loved the ride and the theming of the "spaceship". They were pressing buttons, flipping switches, laughing, and having a ball. Upon emerging from our computerized cocoon, I asked if they were ready to take it up a notch. I had FP+ reservations for the Orange side; an unnecessary reservation, but with the FP tiers and the late arrival, it was all I could get.

My original intent was to take Tahlia and Hailee back on while First Lady Biscuit chillaxed it out in the mission control area. (See that? Biscuit be bringing the street cred.) To my great surprise, she wanted to test out the Orange side and the girls were raring to go. Well, not one to back away from a ride that has the potential to kill you, I led us back through the queue, used our FP+ to bypass the minimal line, and we headed right into the briefing room again.

IMG_0729_zpscc167ae5.jpg

(iPhone Pic)

Well, sort of.

That's what was what was supposed to happen anyway, only it didn't quite go that smoothly.

You see two of our bands didn't work.

This was only our second attraction.

The FastPass+ system which had accounted for a substantial bout of frustration and irritation over the course of the past several months, the system which had me calling technical support on 3 occasions, the system which in recent days had seemed to have overcome much of its instability, that very SAME system now was once again giving me pangs and twitches.

I would like to say this was our only problem of the week. I would like to say that from here on, FP+ never had glitches again. I would like to. But I can't.
But that's getting ahead of myself.

Back to Mission Space.

The CM let all of us through based on my word of honor, (the virtually deserted queue may have played into his sympathies) and I promised to head to Guest Services as soon as we exited the attraction.

I was not sure how the girls would react to the Orange side, nor how my own innards would appreciate the experience. However, I needn't have feared. Everyone loved it and the girls screamed and squealed the entire time.

That wasn't me.

No seriously.

I only made man noises of acceptable attraction appreciation.

We exited our pods, and to my great relief I was able to walk in a mostly straight line. I wanted to be done with the ticket nonsense, and find out why my bands weren't working, so we once again returned to guest services, this time with all four Magic Bands.

After poking around the keyboard, scanning the bands, poking some more, and scanning some more, the Cast Member whose name eludes me determined that he had no idea why the attraction wouldn't accept our bands. (Well that just fills me with uncontainable confidence.) He also finally completed my upgrade, and I added the elusive two days to our tickets.

Upgrades complete and bands certified as being healthy, we split up. I sent Tracy and the girls over to Sunshine Seasons for a snack, while I ran the like the wind (Bullseye) to the car to get my camera. Yep. Did I mention we parked near the back of the Create lot? And that the mechanic was still fixing the stalled out parking tram?

Now had it been just a normal park night, I would have made due with the iPhone camera. I would have been a sacrifice yes, but I would have made it work. (NoTimGunn) But this was not a normal park night. Not only were we here to see Illuminations, but there was also the surprise I mentioned earlier. I can't tell you what it is yet, but I needed the camera to capture it.

I huffed and puffed like a wolf in a pork enclave, and beat a streak to the mini-van. I grabbed the camera, inhaled a few deep breaths of highly humid air, then started heading back to the park with that "powerwalk" move DIS'ers know and love. (Pausing for a photo along of the way of course.)

IMG_6512_zps4fd3653f.jpg

As I entered the park, I looked at my phone and realized something. I was about to miss our FP+ return window for Soarin. Between browsing the shop at Mission Space, waiting in line at Guest Services, waiting for the CM at guest services, and my There and Back Again journey, I had burned over an hour. I knew how much of stickler Disney has become about the FP+ times, and I was already starting into my grace period. It was time to burn soles and make a beeline to The Land. Would I make it to Soarin in time? Would getting the camera be worth it? Would my FP+ work?

Episode 4 - The Flight of the Angry

Previously on Biscuit's Grand Adventure, flat breads were tried, fast passes denied and a fat man was running for The Land.

I only had a few moments before our grace period expired. Digging deep into my reservoir of park mojo, I summoned my inner park beast and burned some tracks through Future World. As I huffed my hind end up the ramp of the Land, I called Tracy and had her and the girls position themselves at the entrance to Soarin. Zigging and zagging my way down the stairs, I used the handrail as a fulcrum to hurl myself at the Soarin entrance. Seeing me approach the girls started scanning their bands. My phone showed we had less than a minute before our grace period expired.

One green on the left scanner, the second green on the right scanner, only seconds left to go.

Three green mickey heads, all the girls were now through the entrance. It was up to me now to beat the clock. Sliding up to the machine and unable to manage more than a wheeze, I held my band up, waiting as the lights began to spin.

Time slowed.

The roar of the crowd faded to silence.

An entire galaxy was created and destroyed.

In the distance, a chipmunk ate a peanut.

Finally, the light turned...
.
.
.
.
.
Green.

WHEW!

YEAH BABY!

I'm IN!

Throwing down a celebratory head bobble, I sallied forth with great joy. It was then that I began to realize that the Old Golden Biscuit ain't what he used to be. Yes my friends, middle age was moving in and setting up shop. Every fiber of my propulsion system was in full borne protest over the recent demands placed upon their person. I was moving much slower up the ramp of the Soarin queue than I had up the ramp of the pavilion. Soon damage reports began playing out on every screen in my Cranium Command center.

After a climb that was far more disturbing to my self-confidence than I cared to admit, we arrived at the sorting station where we FP+ holders were merged back up with the less fortunate.

IMG_6513_zps781b40d2.jpg

It was also here that I began to sense a general anger among the park population.

I don't know if I just didn't notice this the last time we were there, or if this is a fairly new phenomenon, but there was a perceptible undertone of anger against FP+ holders in nearly every queue we encountered. I cannot convey to you how many times we heard "I HATE Fastpass" and other more "colorful" protests being hurled from the standby line. This was a recurring situation that lasted all week long.

I shouldn't be surprised really. We are in a society that demands instant gratification, and demonizes anything that can be interpreted as "special treatment." That someone would actually have to wait in a line while someone else didn't would of course set folks off on a tirade. Granted we probably spent more hours planning ahead than what they actually spent standing in that line, but that is irrelevant. The here and now is all that matters you see.

Ahh...America. I love you to death but you do amuse me.

I see I have digressed. I didn't even know that was coming, but apparently I needed to rage a moment.

I'm recovered now.

Moving on.

As is always the case when I've ridden this attraction, we were in for another good 20 minute wait before entering the actual flight chamber.

I didn't care though. It was cool and we were actually moving DOWN a ramp.
Standing in line, I was amused by the girls'; conversation about this attraction and the time they rode it "as kids.' Neither had a strong memory of it from our previous trip so I was eager to see what they thought of the ride this time around.

827c054c-05fc-47f9-a569-83d4ba91f902_zps1d52022f.jpg

When we finally rounded the corner and started loading into the preshow area, I saw they were nearing the end of the queue for boarding group one. As luck would have it, they finished with the party in front of us and started with group two, placing us on the front row of the center swing.

I was the only one who realized what had just happened, but my involuntary harrumph of triumph necessitated an explanation. I don't think they quite realized what exactly I was talking about until we got inside.

After our flight safety briefing was complete, it was time to head inside. It didn't take long to get us all strapped in and ready to soar.

What can one say about this ride that has not already been said? I don't know why Soarin is so enjoyable, I just know that it is. I think it's mostly the combination of everything, the motion, the wind the music, the visuals, and the smells. LOVE the smells. I know the orange is a popular favorite, but I really like the ocean scent. Pipe that mess into my office and I'd be a happy, happy man.

Well, pipe anything in there really. My building was constructed in 1940 and my office/storage room used to be the school cafeteria. When these wooden floors get warm they smell like a cross between stale tater tots and a recently-visited litter box. Candles, wax pots, warmers, and other such proactive olfactory improvement devices are prohibited. I do what can by using Citrus Magic spray multiple times daily. (Thanks Pete and the DIS Unplugged team for recommending that stuff; it really does remind me of Horizons.)

I have digressed again. Apparently I'm easily distracted in my old age.
When we had dodged the last of the fireworks over Sleeping Beauty's castle and returned safely back the flight terminal, the girls proclaimed that Soarin was, and I quote, "AWESOME!"

Bubba was pleased.

Gathering up our assorted mountain of junk, we walked out of there as happy as larks. (Have you ever wondered if that phrase is offensive to disgruntled larks? I mean isn't a bit presumptuous to label all larks as happy? What if they are having a bad day? Shouldn't their feelings count too?)

The girls had snacked at Sunshine Seasons while I was running like a beast through the parking lot, so I stopped for a drink and a small pick me up.

IMG_6521_zps64e02f7f.jpg

After inhaling my carbonated restorative, it was time to move on to the night's main attraction. It was something we had never done before. Of all the things we had in store for the trip, this was up near the top for things I was MOST looking forward to.

But between The Land Pavilion and that second big surprise I keep alluding to lies a massive expanse of pavement. Since walking from the nether regions of the Epcot parking lot twice was apparently not enough exercise for one day, it was time to once again put myself through the joys of a cross country stroll.

I think "but I digress ... " could have been the title of this trip report ... but I have enjoyed them all so please keep them coming! I mean, how do we even know Larks are happy? Maybe the sound we think is a happy sound is actually what they make when they are pissed off and they are, in fact, almost always pissed off?

I don't quite get how someone can hate fastpass ... I mean, everyone has access to it (though I guess those staying onsite get early access) - it isn't like at Universal where you pay extra. :confused3

Glad you got some exercise in during your trip ... and were able to get your camera. Also that you got the ticket upgrade (finally) done - I never understand why it is so hard some times to give Disney money :confused3

Clearly I get confused a lot :confused3

Soarin is great! Last trip we actually asked if we could wait so that we could sit front and center - really is that much better when you don't have any feet in your view. Though, the film definitely is showing it's age ... I am very excited for the potential for a new version that appears to be coming :hyper:

Looking forward to hearing about the surprise :thumbsup2

Are my eyes deceiving me? An update???:cheer2::cheer2: I completely understand life slowing down Dis time! My updates are much less frequent with work, school, kid practices, competitions, and life pulling at me!! I knew you would be back, even if it took a while!

Kudos to your family for braving the orange side of Mission:Space, we rode the green side half a dozen times.

There is something in my mind that says that no matter how crazy of a 100 million in one chance it is, there is a possibility that you could die riding it. Hi, crazy party of one!:wave2: I didn't tell my kids there was a more intense version, because there is a good chance they would want to ride it, and I could not bring myself to get over my irrational fear.:scared:

Lucky you on getting the first row on Soarin'!!

Yay, 2 updates! Thanks BG.

WOW, I feel for you running back to parking lot, I couldn't do it save my life...

Happy you got the front row on Soarin', I just love that attraction, my favorite in the World.

Looking forward to your next update soon(!), and the big surprise reveal

Waaaaay late to this trip report, but glad to finally be here! We just had to cancel our trip two weeks ago, so I'm consoling myself with reading about others' adventures for a while. :goodvibes

There isn't much better than the first entrance to a park on your first day . . . though I suppose you could have lived without the multiple treks through the parking lot!

I can't wait to hear about the surprise!

It did seem rather odd.

New one does sound nifty.

I understand, believe me! I pondered my own sanity a time or two.

Yay! A Biscuit update! :cool1:

Can't wait for the big surprise...:thumbsup2
Thanks! It turned out to be mighty nifty.

Yay, 2 updates! Thanks BG.

That was quite a march through the asphalt for sure.

Soarin is just a fun time. Add in your favorite people and it makes for a perfect day.

There truly isn't is there? Surprise update coming soon!

After spending a few moments farting around in the exit area, I headed over to guest services to get our ticket upgrade completed.

After reading your past trip reports, I am fearing that this was literal and not figurative. :rotfl:

Loved the Double update and I am really looking forward to what the surprise is.:cool1::cool1:
