The Disney hotels are pretty good about treating a youngster special if celebrating a birthday (special calls from mickey or special buttons or whatever)--does this happen at the DVC resorts?
We're taking a 5 year-old for a birthday treat and want it to be special. Any ideas will be appreciated.
(By the way, we traded (through II) into BWV last fall and were very impressed--had a great unit and a great time. Ain't life grand?)

thanks!

Never plan on getting something for free. Be prepared to pay for your own surprise for the Birthday person. However, if you get some free birthday celebrations, be pleasantly surprised. I've gotten balloons and card in the room and nothing at all. It just depends.

I'm glad you posted this...I didn't know that they did special things for birthday guests (esp. little kids). When it gets close I might mention it to our guide(Rosemary) and see if she can arrange something, like a phone call...nothing over the top. My boys would be thrilled with that. They are already looking forward to Hoop Dee Doo again. They are so excited to have their birthday at Disney, and I'm thrilled not to have to plan another kids party for just one year!

They hit it right on the head, do not expect anything for free-make plans and pay for them.

Are there things the resort are will to do with a little exchange of money???

I am interested in this as well, we will be checking in on our DD's 9th birthday and would love to have some suprise balloons or decorations of some sort in the room. I don't mind paying for this, just wondered if it would be available.

We've been going every year for my son's birthday for 13 years and have never received anything "free" from a DVC resort or any other WDW resort for that matter. I have, however, bought stuff for him. You can order birthday cakes, decorations, etc. from Disney or buy them yourself at Goodings, etc. As other posters have said, don't expect anything, but if it happens it's just a bonus. IMHO, if you really really want some "magic" at Disney, you have to arrange it yourself.

Be sure to take your child to Magic Kingdom Town Hall in the morning and get a "Today is my Birthday" pin. I think the other parks have the same thing too.

When CM's see the pin, they always try to say something or be nice to the birthday children. And I bet the character interractions would be good since they're looking for comments to exchange with the children (if the characters can talk).

And the CM's at the resorts notice the pins too. You never know if they'll spread a little pixie dust your way, but as others have pointed out, you shouldn't expect it....just appreciate it if it happens. :)

My one son celebrated his 21st birthday and the other celebrated his 23rd birthday at BWV. Each time I mentioned it to the front desk when we checked in. I asked if they had anything for birthdays (I would have paid, not expecting free). They noted it and that was that. On DS (21) bday he rec'd a card and lanyard with pin and a balloon in the villa while we were out. This year the other son rec'd a card and balloon from Goofy and later rec'd 3 cupcakes (set up like hidden Mickey) on plates (another hidden mickey) with HB Jason written in choc. on plates and a card from the manager. It was all very nice.

We will be checking into BCV on DS's 8 b'day and when I made the ressie they asked how old our kids were and I said DS would be 8 that day. When I received our confirmation it was noted that guest was having a birthday. Not sure to expect anything but we will be staying at OKW prior to BCV so I might call the day before and ask for somethings like balloons. I would be willing to pay for stuff but since he is the youngest and thinks he never gets anything special I would like to make his day great.

My niece's 4th b-day was last dec 03 while we were in WDW. We stay BCVs. On her birthday we came back from MK to find balloons and a card with a picture of mickey and gang. It was also signed. They left one for my nephew too. Also we took her to CRT for breakfast and they decorated the table, the princesses sang happy birthday and she got a cupcake with candle. It was very special for her.

Get a button from town hall at MK that way everyone knows. They also gave her a phone call from goofy at town hall. She loved it.

For my dad's birthday last July 4th we were at WDW. Goofy actually called our room that morning for my dad. Then we hd PS at Flying Fish. We asked them to make a cake for his birthday. They actually had it made at the Boardwalk Bakery. It was the best cake we have ever eaten. It was so good. I would definitly call them if you need a cake. They actually put a white chocolate mickey face on top of the cake. It was awesome.

Good luck

Thanks everyone!
It sounds like we should at least let them know ahead of time and hope for the best. Good advice not to expect something for nothing, and applies to life in general. (Also, that way you're always thankful and never disappointed.) Great suggestion about the cake. Can't wait to be there!
