My niece is turning ten this month and I'm invited to a family birthday party. I don't know her well, but my sister (her grandmother) tells me she is a "young" ten. I bought her a Barbie (my sister's suggestion) and a purse from Justice for Christmas. She was happy with both.

So, any ideas for a birthday gift? Should I just get a gift card? If so, where to? Target? Anything else? Since I bought her a gift from Justice for Christmas, I'd like to think of something else for her birthday.

I would like to spend about $30, but I"m flexible.

Your thoughts are appreciated!

For Christmas I bought my 2 cousins who are 9 and 10 a make-up bag from Target. In it, I put flavored lip balms, NYC nailpolish (.99 a bottle) and some cute hair accessories, they both loved them and the gift cost me under $20.

Does she like American Girl stuff? Costco was selling the pets with a craft/activity book for $14 and a boxed set of books with mini doll for $35. My DD is just six, but she loves those pets, and I think the boxed book sets with mini doll are great for a ten year old.

Liv Dolls would be a good option if she still likes barbies they have a camp set for them also and different outfits you can buy them. You could also look at the craft sets Toys R Us has a bunch where you can make your own jewerly.

If she's a girly-girl, a Claires gift card should work. Is there a Build-a-Bear in your area? That's a fun certificate.

My DD will be 10 this year and she loves crafts! A gift card to Michael's or AC Moore would be nice, she likes to get gift cards. Or to Claire's as someone else posted.

I have "old" 8 and almost 10 year olds, and they would love this. Both are over Barbies, and the almost 10 year old is almost over Justice (but I still buy her jeans there, because she wears an 8 slim, and they fit her really well). They love makeup, nail polish, girls press on nails (peace signs, animal prints), fun body wash and lotion, hair accessories...

what about jewelry? I got my niece a nice ring set from coldwater creek. They were having clearance on the jewelry. It is 3 strechy rings for $6.99. she loved them. I also added some craft things since she loves to draw.

My dd will be 10 in May.

What she would love is-itunes gift cards but she still has about $100+ worth from Christmas.

Justice gift cards & those I bet the mom would love too. My dd got one for Christmas, plus he has a credit & she is dying to go shopping. She must ask me weekly & I keep telling her no-why no? Because it is still winter here & she doesn't need winter clothes & what she would buy would be spring/summer related. So hopefully for her b-day she gets more Justice cards & can spend a little more, combined with a 40% off coupon.

Claires-she loves this store too. She has her ears pierced & has a ton of earrings already but she loves to look for crap in there & she actually looks at the sale rack.

I have a sister thats much younger than me and when she was around that age I would go to Target or Justice or anystore she was into at the time and get as many nice things on clerance as I could find for the money I had budgeted for her. I also get fun things from Target's dollar aisle and this way she gets a TON of stuff for her birthday or christmas. It is all nice quality and I would either fill a huge box with a bunch of little packages or wrap up a bunch of clothing boxes with the outfits matched up with some accessories and fun stuff included.

She loved it and you would be surprised what you can get with $30 if you look hard enough, but my sis loved quatity over quality and I think that ship has sailed she is asking for jewelery, expensive ipods, and coach purses now EEK!

My daughter is turning 9 and we are getting her an "Art Essentials Watercolor Painting Kit with Wooden Table Easel and Portfolio." She loves arts and crafts. We will add moe supplies to it.

She will also get a DS game. Her aunts will get her clothes and her nana books and shoes. She also loves getting things for her American Girl doll and legos.

I think she would also like time with the person giving to her. For example, a special date with that person, zoo, lunch, park, etc.

I think I'll go with either a gift card to Claire's or a game for her DS. Thanks again for the suggestions!

Build a Bear and Barbies for a 10 year old :rotfl:. I have a 10 year old. She hasn't touched either of them for a few years.

I would say go to Justice or Claires and you can't go wrong. My DD wants everything in either store.

DD11's favorite 10th bday present was a plastic storage box with a lid, filled with nail polish, nail files and a little battery operated nail dryer. She looooooooooooved it, still uses it and has now added neon polishes, black polish and the polishes that do stripes to her kit.

My DD is a young 10 also. She is not a big fan of gift cards (my DS 9 prefers them). Her favorite things are American Girl Craft kits from Michaels or BJ's, she loves a gift bag full of "girly" things like nail polish, bubble bath, shampoo's etc, she also loved her gift bag of hair "gadgets" from Claire's that she got for Christmas.

I've got a DD who just turned 10 and she got two DS games that she loved, Super Scribblenauts and Color Cross. She also loves her Lego Harry Potter and How to Train your Dragon games.

I agree---neither my daughter nor any of her friends that I know of have touched barbies or build a bears for years by 10 years old!
