I booked two ps's for our upcomming trip to Disney. The ps's are special- one character meal and one meal for dh birthday. My dh chose ohana, the Laua sounds festive.
Has anyone ever celebrated a birthday here? When I made the ps I advised it was for a birthday and ? if this restuarant did anything special...the operator gave me a phone # to call 48 hrs beforethe ps and advised me that I could check then. I assume this is to order a cake. Anyone else ever done this? What is the cake like? Do they have different sizes, flavors? cost? I want to arrange this w/out dh knowing and once we are on vacation that will not be an easy task. I thought that I would have gotten more info on the phone when booking ps's, but I guess I'm just lucky that I finally got through after making three phone calls being put on hold first for more than 10 min. then the next time for 15 min. only to be cut off before anyone helped me! I was pleasant when I finally did get through and I guess I am not surprised that the operator was not more helpful to me with the evening being so busy for her. I would think that Disney would try to make this experience a little nicer than just an announcement that they are experienceing longer hold times than normal.
Anyway- now that I've vented :sad2: - Anyone out there celebrate a birthday at Ohana?
...Just counting the days til the kids are out of school and then til we're off on the vacation I've dreamed of since they were little babies! :cheer2:

Just an FYI - the Luau does NOT take place at 'Ohana. It takes place at the Luau Cove, also in the Polynesian and it is called the Spirit of Aloha
Polynesian Luau. 'Ohana is a restaurant in the GCH at the Polynesian and is a family oriented dinner. Dinner at 'Ohana is wonderful, especially if you can schedule it so you can watch the MK fireworks.

As for the cake, when I wanted to order one last year, it cost $25.00 and it was supposedly large so we didn't order it since there were only 3 in our party...But someone out there who has ordered one should confirm this.

Enjoy your trip and :bday: to your DH!

Not sure where you're staying...but if you're at a deluxe you can call private dining ahead of time and order a cake for delivery to your room, or the Poly and see if they'll deliver it for dessert. FYI, disneyflorist can deliver a gift basket, so can FeralPeg, another DISer. Also, there's those Tuxedo strawberries :goodvibes

Yes, the Luau is not the same as Ohanas, I don't want your DH to be disappointed if they were mixed up. The Luau is a dinner show, while Ohanas is a restaurant at the Poly.

You can order a cake ahead of time, if you want - and you do have to pay for it.

Please remember that the majority of WDW guests (seemingly) are celebrating something and WDW can not possibly make a big deal about every one of them, esp since a lot of people take advantage of it and celebrate "unbirthdays" or their birthday for days on end. It gets expensive and time consuming to celebrate everything. Not all waiters/waitresses will choose to celebrate with you, while others will makea big deal out of it, sing to you, bring you a dessert, etc. You never know, and it depends on your server. All the dining reservation people can do is mark it on your sheet - many of them have never even been to WDW or dined at that restaurant so they can't promise anything more than that or tell you what the restaurant might do for you. They also get into big trouble if they promise stuff that can't always happen.

There have been an influx of upset people on these boards because someone in their family's birthday wasn't celebrated when they dined and such (even if they mentioned it at checkin and everything), and I wanted to make sure you knew it doesnt' always happen so you're not disappointed if it doesn't. THe only sure fire way to ensure his birthday is celebrated at the restaurant is to order a cake yourself. Some dinner shows or restaurants do a generic happy birthday to everyone at one time, like at Chef Mickeys or Hoop De Doo, but I know Ohanas doesn't do that but I'm not sure about the Luau.

Honestly not intending to sound like a lecture, just want to warn you to not be disappointed... they just can't possibly make a big deal out of everyone. I truly hope your DH has a wonderful birthday there!

=)

I don't know if dh mixed up the laua & ohana- I'll hae to check- thanks for the info as I mentioned when I called to book ps's I really did not get much info from the operator...I know it was very busy....I'll plan something special on my own- was just wondering about the cake as we are a family of 4 & a large cake would be too much- I didn't want to go through the trouble of trying to order w/out my dh's knowledge if it wasnt going to work out anyway.
Walt disney itself is a huge celebration for us we've wanted to go for so long- dd's are 9.5 and 6.
I can not beleive how excited I am- Disney really is magical! :earsgirl:
