Birthday cake?

Can someone tell me what the birthday cake is like that you can request at the Disney restaurants? We will be in WDW over my dad's birthday, so I am curious if it is worth asking for.

I have lunch at the Sci-Fi planned for his birthday, and I see you can tell them at check in that you would like a birthday cake. Is it worth paying for and having, or should I order a nicer one from a bakery? Or do you have any other suggestions? We are going to the Mickey's Very Merry Christmas party that night too.

We went to Chef Mickey's on my son's birthday a couple of years ago. I called ahead and ordered a cake. It was a small round cake, but way more than we needed for four people. We had several options to chose from, but we chose Stitch and they personalized it with his name. I think it was around $25.
