Birthday at DL - how does it work?

How does it work to celebrate a b-day at DL? I know about the buttons from City Hall, but is there anything else special we can do for Ds, besides getting a huge cake we won't eat and don't have room for? (he hates cake anyway!)

We aren't staying onsite, so any of the special 'hotel stuff' (like balloons in the room, etc) we won't be doing.

What else could we do to make it special for him that won't cost a fortune?

And, another question, since we usually celebrate both our boys' b-days together, would we be able to do the same at DL, even though their b-days are actually a month apart? Just thinking my 3 yr old won't like to be left out of the birthday fun for his brother for the first time since birth, but his b-day was in march, and we aren't going till end of April.

ETA - that looks about as clear as mud - once again, getting no sleep with colds and 3 sick kids is not helping me communicate - guess I should just go to bed...feel free to ask what the HE@@ I am talking about....

Hi again

There's the Happiest Birthdays on Earth, or somethign like that, held at the Plaza Inn once (I think) a day. It's something ghastly like 15.99 per person (not sure if that is every single person, or just those 3 and above), and it seems to be a silly show with Pat E. Cake hosting it. Each person gets a simple round cake to decorate with frosting and such, then there's cake judging (though I don't think it's a true competition, LOL), and it just seems like fun.

We might do it for DS's b'day, though if we did I'd have to make some frosting and get 'safe' sprinkles for him, and I might even have to switch out for a known-to-be-safe cake for him, b/c of the corn syrup issues the poor kid has. It's no fun to have a b'day celebration if he's going to have a rage inside of 20 minutes. Sicne it's Disneyland, there's likely a pin or button of some sort that you get with it.

We're also, as I just mentioned, going to have a character meal of his choice. Easier for my guy to choose, as he's been there. It's a little harder for you guys! I figure with the birthday button a kid will be noticed and might be sun to, and so on.

Other than that, in my opinion, just being at DLR "for" your b'day (even if it's not ON your b'day) is really very special!


Oh, and if their stock has been replenished (the whole place was out of them for awhile) there are also birthday buckets. There's a pink princess one with a lid like a dunce, er, princess hat, and then one that's more gender neutral or even boyish, though the shape of it is escaping me right now. They also have a small cake in it (if you've seen the picture of my son at 2 sleeping in the rental stroller, with a plastic box of cake in his lap, that's the cake that came with my, yes, my, princess birthday bucket), and little cutesie things in them. I can't recall their price, but I *believe* you can request that Disney Dining let a restaurant know you want one, and I also believe that there's a cart near the Plaza Inn that sells them (or at least they sold them in oct of '06).

Rather than get one of those, I think I might sneak away the evening we get there (if I haven't been to the disney outlet north or south of me) and get a plush doll and a few other little things, and put them in a basket I bring, or a cute box, or something...just a little gift for him to open on his day (we're lucky enough that we'll be there ON his b'day, but I'd likely do this even if we weren't going to be there for his exact day..after all, my hubby has gotten presents all month long for HIS b'day, LOL).

I feel bad for you, just having the one kid with the creeping crud going around wasn't much fun. We don't generally do the medical thing, we just go through it, but on the 3rd day I was so tired that I tried all day to get him to take some Triaminic (decongestant and cough suppresant), so we could get some sleep. He refused all day though.

But save your physical resources, b/c after they are done with it, you might do what I did and get it yourself! That's just as hard for me. So take your vitamins, try some echinacea if you're not allergic, get rest when you can!



And know that even though I had smileys all around the b'day celebration thing, by no means am I sure that we are going to do it, and I don't think it's necessary to do at all.

And I think it would be perfectly fine to celebrate your boys' birthdays at once while there.

Definatley do them together! They may bring a surprise at a table service resturaunt for them , benighets at Cafe orleans and Jazz kitchen for b-days without asking for my boys. B-day cupcakes at character meals at no extra charge. Cm's wishing you a happy birthday is like gold for kids, they love being special!
They sell b-day pins if you collect them and b-day hats too!

Thanks Molly - I've actually been popping every vitamin and healthfood known to man ever since eldest ds got sick last week, but today I have given in - not as sick as the others yet, but I will get there...it's pretty much inevitable for us moms - wading thru all the yuk, sneezed on, up all night, barely time to eat and get any rest...no hope at all. however, I usually get over it much quicker than the kids, so that's something. I have taken to drugging the baby with triaminic today just so she'll sleep more than 15 minutes at a stretch - no hope for Mom to get any rest if little princess won't sleep! So I got a whole 10 minutes while DD and DS2 slept, and DS1 played Lincoln Logs!

Thanks for the birthday advice too - not sure if we'll do the actual Plaza Inn thing - we were more gonna give them each a time where they get to pick what we do - rides, pool, restaraunt, etc..., or something along those lines, so they feel it's very special. Just not sure if I am gonna be able to "let go" that much!

I would do a birthday bucket. We got one for my DD, she loved it. We also got her a hat from the Mad Hatter that is a cake and the candles light up. Then we each gave her a new birthday pin too.
And yes, celebrate together, get the pins and enjoy yourselves!!

Feel better soon, I've been sooooo sick this year. Not my kids, just me! This crud sucks terribly.......hopefully you guys are all well soon!

We did that last year and my DS had a fun time. Pat E. Cake sings a couple songs, makes sure to stop at every single table to praise the cake creation that the birthday kid got to make. Nobody gets skipped or overlooked. At the end, Mickey and Minnie stop by and there is pictures and more songs. It is a little pricy, but for younger kids it is pretty fun and special.

At City Hall make sure they get their special birthday phone call I believe its from Goofy. That should be fun and its free!

I forgot about the free Tortillas. They are really good.

The Happiest Birthdays on Earth party was really the only birthday thing (I can remember)that cost extra. Having his Happy birthday pin got him a lot of attention (We put it right over the Mickey patch on his Mouse ears so it was hard to miss). I can't count how many times he had CMs wishing or singing him happy birthday (The best one was at Monsters Inc. Roz at the end of the ride sang Happy birthday to him and he just loved that someone in a ride sang to him directly). He got to participate in a show over at the DCA Hollywood backlot (and got a really cool hand drawn picture of Woody out of it too). He got a special desert at the Blue Bayou. Wherever we turned, there was something to make it more special for him.

It really is the perfect way to celebrate a kid's birthday IMO and most of it dosen't cost extra either.
