hello, we are booked for dinner at Akershus on my daughter's 5th birthday and I'm just wondering if I should call ahead and order a cupcake for her or if I can do it upon arrival. She doesn't need a huge cake, I'm thinking just a cupcake with candle would be fine. Any help appreciated, thanks.

The way we have done it in the past: call Disney Dining and let them know it's a birthday meal for a specific reservation they make a note and send it to the restaurant so that the cupcake is ready.

1) You can order a Mickey Cake at the podium when you check-in for the meal.
2) The newer frozen cakes are pretty darn good.
. . . soft and gooey on the inside
. . . chocolate ears
. . . more than plenty for a table of 5-6 people

As Rusty said, there is a podium cake that can be ordered when you arrive at the restaurant or you can check the cake thread for other options if you want to arrange for something in advance. You can call the dining reservation line and have the birthday noted on your reservations, but you couldn't order a cupcake or cake through them.

If you are asking about the complimentary cupcake that is often brought out for celebrations, it is not something that can be ordered. You can have your daughter wear her birthday button and let them know at the restaurant when you check in, but the complimentary cupcake or other dessert is at the server's discretion. We have had servers bring a dessert or something else when we were celebrating and others who did not acknowledge the celebration at all. With so many (thousands) of visitors celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, weddings, family reunions, first trips, you name it, there's no way Disney can guarantee every celebration will be recognized. If having a special birthday dessert is important it is best to plan and pay for something yourself.

1) Yep.
2) Alas, many, many people feel their "special" day should be recognized.
3) Just is not possible.
4) Far too many REAL special days - birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc.
5) And, we haven't even added in the folks who FAKE a special event to try to get a goodie to two.
6) So, as stated above by purple figment, if folks want something special they really need to order it and pay for it.
7) I have had the podium cake, and it really is good and it really is special.

NOTE: And, yes, the cut piece on the right side was done at our able before it was photographed.

Agree!

I had ordered a Mickey face cake for our recent trip before they discontinued it. No one told me before our trip. I was supposed to get the Mickey face cake anyways because I ordered it before they stopped offering them. So ... when I checked in they said they’d get me a podium cake which I was expecting to be the old style and kind of bummed.

Then, they brought this new one which is way better tasting than the Mickey face one ever was!

I highly recommend getting the new podium cake. It is really delicious.
