Birth order determines personality?

I was watching 20/20 last night and they had a segment about how birth order determines your personality. They said that the oldest child is more responsible and more conservative while the younger child is more likely to be rebelious, revolt and more of a risk taker. The younger siblings act this way because they feel like they have to live up to there older siblings achievments.

The scientists who agree with these theories provide legitamite sources to support the theory like the Clinton Carter brothers. And also some of the worlds greatest revolutional leaders where the youngest in there family: T. Jefferson, Marx, Castro. But there are also exceptions to the theory like the Bush brothers. George was the prankster, while Jeb was the more subtle, conservative sibling.

Well, I was just wanting your guys' opinion on this one. How does birth order affect you and your siblings personality, if any? I know in my family (I have a younger brother) this holds true, I am the responsible one while my little brother is more of a risk taker and rebelious.

well, i am an only child but most of my friends have siblings and in most of their families this theory is true.

i'm definitely not a risk taker, and my brother is definitely not responsible...this doesn't work for my family.

My mom has a whole book on this that she was reading last summer and she'd read some parts out loud to my dad, and I was there. It's much more complex than just the order you are, it depends on if your parents are youngest, middle, oldest, only child. Like the children of two babies are going to be wild because their parents were carefree and laidback...so there's a lot more to it than just if you're an oldest, middle, youngest, only.

The aforementioned personalities are not innate; they are acquired, often due to changing influence from parents as years go by.

my older sister is definetly not the most responsible and my younger sister really isn't a huge risktaker and im in the middle, and im sorta both. idk, it really doesn't work for my family either

Hahahahahahahaha! My oldest brother is NOT shy and conservitive. Not by the slightest line. Ha. I am the middle and I'm more like that. My sister, who is younger than me by 6 years is the one most likely to rebel. My brother kinda fits between. If you see him leave the room, 3....2.....1....you hear my sister scream....

I'd say that's true with me and my sisters. I am the oldest, and I'm definitely more responsible than my youngest sister, and she is willing to take a lot more risks than me!
