Birth Certificate

I just found out something. You guys are so good you may know this already.My mother-in-law told me to check on our birth cert. to make sure the are good because she heard a story. So I called for my husband and come to find out his is no longer any good since 9/11. The new ones are much more detailed. Lots more info on them. So I called for the rest of the family and just my husband and I need to get new ones the kids are good. So I'm writing this to tell everyone to make sure yours are good. They may still except them but my sister-in-law could not get her drivers lic. until she got a new one.

What do you mean your Birth Certificate is no good????? You are only born once and issued your original Government BC then. I know that you can have them reissued if necessary if your is lost or destroyed, but just....what....expired? I've never heard such a thing. Please let us all know why it is considered 'NO GOOD'. Was is that maybe he had his hospital certificate and he didn't have his official government BC? Was that the trouble?

Sounds like you did't had a certifed copy, which technically was never legal for anything. But since September 11th, the enforcement has gotten stricter, so they are finally clamping down on those.

My husbands bc did not have his parents name on it. Had the seal and all that but not the parents name. So when I called they said the new ones have more detail to them, more info on them. Hope that sounds a little more clear.

I have heard that there was an issue with birth certificates from one state. I don't remember which state (think i was NJ, but could be wrong) that they would not be used for passport purposes for a while or something like that.

Also as has been discussed in the past few weeks, CA has been sending out abstract birth certificates (slightly smaller, with one or two lines of missing information on them) for the past so many years. These are no good for a passport, but when you send away for the BC after birth this is what is sent. Unless you know to ask for the full version and request it, this is not what was given out. So Now lots of people are finding out they have a problem and have to pay for a new one (a few counties seem to be exchanging them, but my county does not)

However we were told these birth certificates were valid for traveling to mexico and canada and such, just could not be used for a passport.

Thanks for this bit of info. I will have to call and see because I don't need it for a passport just the cruise this summer.

I just tried to get a passport and my BC was no good. It is from NJ. They said I need a registration number on it so therefore I applied for a new one. I know I will not have the passport by cruise time but that is okay. I do not want to pay the extra money since I had to get the BC now.
