The scanners are located directly above the slot you put your ticket in. All you do is stick your index and middle finger in the opening - you will feel a bar between them and you just squeeze your two fingers together. The machine takes some pictures/measurements and matches them to the one it has on file. The one on file is from the first time you used the ticket that requires the scan. It's easy and relatively quick, although some people have trouble with it. If the scan "fails", the CM usually asks for picture ID that matches the name on the ticket.
When my biometric scan didn't work for my AP once, the CM simply took my AP and asked my name! She never asked for a picture ID. I thought this was rather strange.
