Hey Billy Ray...You were the parent. Not only that, you were on the show, so you were there every day. You went around telling anyone who would listen what a good head Miley had on her shoulders. You could have stopped when you saw the train going off the tracks. Demi Lovato's parents put their daughter first...you could have done the same. Instead you wait until she turns 18 and then do a GQ interview to tell people it's not your fault? :sad2:

Here is one of the many articles about this......

I read the entire interview and the thing that struck me the most is how he blames her handlers. Handlers are just employees you could fire, right?

He says he tried to be more of a friend than a parent and I can understand how easily one can make that mistake. I think the divorce is playing into this. Maybe her mother has more control and now he wants to bad mouth the situation. It reminds me of Jon Gosselin.

I find it funny how he said he never made a DIME off his daughter. I find that hard to believe.

guilt provides a powerful motive for shifting the blame.

This is true.

I just think it's sad. My oldest niece LOVED Hanna Montana so I followed her some and it was a really cute show. Knowing a little bit about Billy Ray Cyrus, I had hope Miley wouldn't go the way of someone like Lindsey Lohan. Then little things started happening here and there and my sister and I both said "Where are the parents?" every time. I have to assume they had most of the control while she was a minor. Billy Ray said the situation now reminds him of Michael Jackson, Kurt Cobain and Anna Nicole Smith...I think that's a stretch, but since there were and are so many cautionary tales out there like theirs why didn't he do something about it?

He's noticing now that the luster is off her stardom, and figures that controversy is the best way to get back into the spotlight.

Can't feel sorry for them for a second. They have all the money in the world. While that doesn't buy happiness, it sure as heck solves the problems most people go through.

He's a one hit wonder that is complaining that his cash cow is ending.

Perhaps for him it has already ended since she turned 18. All the checks will go directly to her now.

I'll be interested to see what happens with her career now. Hanna Montana was a cute show, but Miley herself is no actress and IMHO not much of a singer either. She's going to host SNL in March. That should be interesting.

Why is it that so few people take responsibilty for their own actions. It is always someone elses fault.

Exactly! Well said.

Didn't he get a paycheck when he was playing her father on HM?:confused3

We stopped watching Hanna Montana years ago when it was obvious she was going to down a wrong path. The experience of one of the hosts on they morning radio show we listen too was the final straw. The women host has two kids roughly the same age as our DKs. Her kids like HM and since she is in radio she was able to get her kids and some friends to see Miley before or after a show.

The radio host warned her kids that Miley might not be friendly nor the person that they see on stage or screen. And she was right. Miley had a bunch of rules the kids had to follow to be in her presence and she was not the persona the kids expected. Just the opposite. Not a surprise but disappointing.

Miley is making her own choices and has been for years. It is hard enough to keep a teenager on the right path. How does a parent keep a kid on the right path when the kid has earned more money before she was 18 than most people in the US will earn in a lifetime? In NC a 16 year old can be emancipated from their parents if they can show they have the means to support themselves. Miley has the means.

Once the parents allow a kid into the show biz world you have opened the door to troubles and many dangerous temptations. If the child is somewhat successful and makes money the dangers and temptations increase and Miley has been more than successful. I do not think her parents have had much control for years and now that she is an adult it really is all Miley's responsibility.

Billy Ray saying he hasn't made money off of his daughter, while technically true, sure did open doors for his own career. Would he have been in a series on tv, done any movies, been on Dancing With the Stars without his riding on his daughter's coattails? Absolutely not! One hit wonder indeed!

Also, whose bright idea were those questionable photos that were taken that created such a stir? He acted all innocent and naive about it, but there he was right in the middle of the shoot. Seems like a lot of bad decisions were made by everyone surrounding that poor girl. :confused3

Fame and money have a way of changing even the most down to earth person, especially when they are as young as Miss Cyrus was/is. It's just a real shame.

Shame on you Billy Ray for not manning up and taking a lot of the responsibility!

...

It was reported after the photos appeared that he and one other adult family member had left the set when the photos were taken. I cannot remember if the other adult was Miley's mother, grandmother, etc.

It is one of those things we will not likely ever know really want happened. Was Billy really off the set, did the photographer push the poses, or did Miley want those photos to move her career along?

Twas about that time we turned off Hanna Montana.

Maybe Hannah Montana is the devil. Or maybe daddy should have paid attention to daughter instead of money.

I'm not a fan of Miley or Billy Ray, but I do think that maybe what he is trying to say is that in retrospect, he sees where he made mistakes and wishes he could have a second chance. Don't we all have moments like that? Thing is, there are no second chances so we have to do our best the first time round with our kids. And part of that "best" is to listen to the wisdom, the been-there-done-that, of others.

It sounds to me like he is saying he wishes he had listened to what people tried to tell him and now he wants to put that same message out to others. Yeah, his life may have been a whole lot different without HM, but Miley, like all teenagers, was going to take her own path in life and choose whether or not to listen to her parents.

My daughter went to high school with someone that has toured with her (and we were acquainted with his parents). I can't imagine they are all that happy with consequences in his life from the days on the road. But as long as the money was coming in, who was going to take a close look?

I do have to say that Billy Ray's paltry earnings of $12,000 a week makes me gag. Wake up and smell the coffee (well, the kind you get when you earn $500 a week). It ain't Starbucks!
