First let me say that if this post is inappropriate, mods please delete it. DISers have always been helpful in the past and I just thought I might get some good advice here.

Okay - I've never had a bikini wax before but I'm thinking about it for our upcoming honeymoon. I've lost some weight and will now be wearing a bathing suit without a big t-shirt covering me up. Previously I have "cleaned up" with a razor but there still seemed to be some untidyness at the bathing suit edges but with a big T I didn't really care. I'm thinking that a wax would be the easiest way to make sure nothing shows around my suit.

Here are the questions - how far in advance should I get it done? How long does it last? What do I wear to the waxing? At the salon there are private waxing rooms but I don't know how it works other than when I get my eyebrows waxed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I too am interested in hearing about this...particularly how bad it hurts.....

As helpful as I'm sure some of us would like to be, those details really aren't DIS appropriate. ;) I would suggest googling and you will get lots of good info and hopefully all your questions answered. :)

Congratulations on your weight loss!
If I were you (which I wouldn't be because I've gotten my eyebrows done and I can't IMAGINE the pain for a bikin wax! :earseek: ) I'd call the salon and ask them your questions. I'm sure they've heard them before. They're basic questions that anyone would ask the first time. :)

there was a thread on here about this subject approx. a year ago.
Be prepared to put your ankles behind your head while having it done. :teeth:

It hurts. Worse than having a baby, imo. The good news is it doesn't last nearly as long. I'd get it done about a week before you leave for your trip -- long enough for any redness to disappear, but not too long to where the hair starts to grow back. You can wear your panties or nothing, depending on how much you want removed.

Thank you snoopy. Your information is very helpful.

Bananiem - I'll definitely be giving them a call.

It's really not that painful. It's like getting 20 large bandaids ripped off. yes it hurts, but only for a moment. A few tips:

You really don't want your first wax to be right before the wedding, so start going now or at least 5 weeks prior. Then the honeymoon one should be the Thursday before a Sat wedding.

You'll have to grow the hair out to at least 1/4" (that's about a two weeks for most people).

Take a couple painkillers before you go.

Be prepared for a little blood (normal) and don't go the week before or during your period (ten times more painful).

It will vary how long your wax will last. For some it's 1 week, others 2 and others 4.

Don't just go to any waxer...they are not all created equal. Get recommendations for a really good one. An entire brazilian should last about 20 minutes. I had a bad one that last 45. Now THAT was awful!

The more you wax, the less hair comes back in. That's why after a year or more you might not have to go as often and it gets less painful.

I don't know who that person went to that had their legs behind their head, but that's not the case. You won't be in any strange positions. Well there is one....but not DIS appropriate. :teeth:

PM me if you have any questions.

It hurt like a beast! I had yhe bikini area done and under my arms. For 2 weeks afterwards it felt like I got punched in the armpit (extremely sore). Even with waxing you need to watch out for ingrown hairs and little red bumps.

Exfoliate extra good the day of the waxing. It'll make sure the hairs are standing up and release any trapped ones.

There are some creams and lotions designed to have a numbing effect.

The more often you have it done, the less painfull it will be.

Wear underwear or your swimsuit.

Me? I just let the hair grow abit (about a week), soak in hot water, exfoliate with a loofah, slather on shaving cream, grab a BRAND NEW Venus razor and shave away! Using a new razor cuts down on nicks.

Go for it, it is awesome! Yes, it hurts during, but as soon as it's over, it's over.
Since I see your honeymoon is next month, I wouldn't get one until it is almost time. Maybe 4-5 days before the wedding, if you get one now it probably won't be back until your honeymoon.
Also, if you can avoid going during PMS/TOM it will be less painful. Trust me on that one.
Ask your friends who've gotten it done and maybe they can tell you which lady to go to.
Good Luck!

Ladies thanks so much for the honest and helpful answers. I knew I could rely on you for good advice. Maybe I'm weird but I don't find waxing in general to be painful for more than a few seconds so hopefully this won't be so bad either.

It's really not that bad. The first one is the most uncomfortable, but after that, its a breeze. The only downfall to waxing is the growing out time in between waxes. Other than that, its the way to go.
