I played around with taking pictures while riding my bike today. I mounted the camera on a ball head on a Bogen clamp, pointed it back at me, and took some pictures. None were great, but this one was the closest to the concept I was looking for.

It was shot at 19mm focal length, 1/50s shutter, f/11, ISO 400, -1 stop flash compensation, AV mode.

I was playing around with the clamp because I'm toying with video taping my commute some time next week. I'm trying to get into the habit of riding my bike to the office when the weather isn't too bad. It's a 9 mile ride when I avoid the major roads. It's really a great commute with lots of heavily wooded stretches, wide shoulders on the roads, lots of bike paths, and even a final stretch along the Woodlands Waterway.

Cool concept. Where I live a new commuter rail service just started running and I've been trying out riding my bike to work. It's only 1.5 mi to the train station and 3.3 mi after that but it has still been very rewarding, and I love having 30 min on the train to sit and mess around on my laptop and I get to work far more awake than I ever used to. I've even lost a few pounds so far too!

Dude that is awesome. I wish there were more bike paths here in Souther Miss. There are plenty of roads, very few sidewalks, and NO bike paths. I rode my bike to work once a few years ago (12 miles one way). I have no desire to offer my life to the front of an SUV if I dont have to. Good job on the shot though, I like the perspective.:thumbsup2

The Woodlands is great for that. Did you grow up in the area? I graduated from McC, back when men rode dinosaurs to work :scared:

I've only been here for a few years. I've lived all around Houston (1960 area, inside the loop, Clear Lake, and Sugar Land), but this is the first time I've lived in The Woodlands.

The town I live in (The Woodlands, TX) is about the same size as Disney World. It's got almost 100 miles of pathways. They run alongside roads, through golf courses, along creeks, and through the woods. In addition to the ubiquitous trails, there are wide shoulders along most of the roads. It's really a great place for bike commuting.

The title caught my attention. I live in Kingwood!! Have you looked up the Woodlands Cycling Club-I've heard they're awesome-setting up rides for beginners-all the way to road. I used to do paths-still do occassionaly on my hybrid-mostly road now. Have fun and I'm DEFINITELY NOT showing this to dh-he'll want to do it too-he's already got enough gear on his front end with that dang Garmin

umm, i think i see a little something peeking out of your left nostril....

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: and sheese you men, you are just like my hub, like it would kill either of you to smile when you are taking your picture

Ha...after your witty earlier post about your alligator encounter- I half expected this post to have two pics...the one you showed and then the one last picture your camera took after you flew over the handle bars and it met up with the pavement!!!:lmao:

Anyway- glad it was only a one shot photo. Did you use a remote to trigger the shot?

Cool concept and even better that you are looking to bike to work. Not a chance where I live- a 40 mile commute with some killer hills. I'm not north enough in New Hampshire to actually call them mountains but there are some pretty low grade hills that would not be fun in the morning.

Looking forward to seeing the video!

No razors in The Woodlands? ;)

Just kidding. Nice idea. Worked well I think. :thumbsup2

Did you use a remote to trigger the shot?

Yes

Looking forward to seeing the video!

I'm having second thoughts about the video. The camera was subjected too a lot of vibration. I don't know that I want to do that to my video camera for an hour.

It was the weekend. I can't be bothered to shave or comb my hair one weekends. Weekdays is more than enough.

I'm riding my bike downhill through the trees with a bunch of expensive camera stuff precariously perched on it while worrying if I have the exposure settings correct. I have to push the darn remote shutter release without getting the cable caught in the spokes and then keep perfectly still during the exposure. I'm doing all that and you think I should be worried about smiling? If it helps, I was grinning like a Chesire Cat while I was writing the Math is Fun thread.
