Biggest Loser 8 Fall Challenge -- for losers and maintainers!

QOTD: To handle stress I try to workout or watch something with a geat soundtrack.

My favorite non-traditional Christmas Carol is Where Are You Christmas? from the Grinch or Believe by Josh Groban from Polar Express. My favorite traditional is O Holy Night by Josh Groban.

I have completely finished shopping for my girls for Christmas. Still need to finish DH and my parents and siblings.

Hey redwalker! Can't wait to see you tomorrow night too! I have a nice pair of black jeans to wear and still deciding on a top to wear. Got the ingredients for the taco salad, keeping it original. I'm exhausted! We were in Natick for about 45 minutes today and then went to Trader Joe's in Framingham.

Its 2 weeks until Christmas, and it may be a stressful time for many of us. So what do you do to handle stress?

I am still taking my yoga class with the last one next Thursday. This has not been a good time for me. Most of the shopping is not done and we have been working very hard so that ds2 could leave right aftter the new year to Africa. Post office screwed something up for his passport and we are hoping that he can get it and then get his visa in time to leave. Keep your fingers crossed.

And part 2: what's a favourite non-traditional Christmas carol?

My favorite non traditional Christmas song is the one below. I have never heard it on the radio but it has been done by the local high school choir a couple of time. I just heard it the other night and it really brightened my evening. YOu need to read the entire lyrics. As the kids were singing the audience were laughing.

The Twelve Days After Christmas

The Twelve Days After Christmas
(Frederick Silver)
(Not sung to the same tune as the other song!)

The first day after Christmas, my true love and I had a fight.
And so I chopped the pear tree down and burned it just for spite.
Then, with a single cartridge, I shot that blasted partridge,
That my true love, my true love gave to me.

The second day after Christmas, I pulled on the old rubber gloves
And very gently wrung the necks of both the turtle doves,
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

The third day after Christmas, my mother caught the croup;
I had to use the three French hens to make some chicken soup.
The four calling birds were a big mistake,
For their language was obsence .
The five gold rings were completely fake
And they turned my fingers gree.

The sixth day after Christmas, the six laying geese wouldn't lay:
I gave the whole darn gaggle to the ASPCA.

On the seventh day what a mess I found:
All seven of the swimming swans had drowned,
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.

The eighth day after Christmas, before they could suspect,
I bundled up the . . .
Eight maids a-milking,
Nine pipers piping,
Ten ladies dancing,
'Leven lords a-leaping,
Twelve drummers drumming
(spoken) Well, actually I kept one of the drummers(girls)
Well, actually I kept one of the maids a-milking(boys)

And sent them back collect.
I wrote my true love, "We are through, love"
And I said in so many words,
"Furthermore your Christmas gifts were for the birds!"
(echo of "four calling birds, three french hens, two turtle doves
and a partridge in a pear tree."

I'm enjoying seeing the answers to today's questions. Some of the songs coming out are one's I know and some are one's I don't, but will look for :goodvibes

Dona - that 12 days' after Christmas was :lmao:

Sorry I have been AWOL. DD12 started getting sick on Dec. 1 while we were still at WDW. We got home around midnight on Dec. 2 and I took her to the Dr. on Dec. 3 (Thurs). Temp was 102 in the office. Strep and flu tests both neg, so no meds, just sent her home to rest. Of course she had already missed 3 days of school for the vacation, so I was feeling guilty about that. Her temp was down to normal by Sunday, but she was still extremely weak and barely getting out of bed at all, just to go to the bathroom. I told her on Monday that I wanted her to try to go to school by Wed, and I did send her even though she was still really weak. Her temp was normal and her cough was much better, so I thought she should at least go and prove she was sick and not still in FL! Well, she only lasted 2 hours and they called me to come get her. I decided to take her back to the Dr. but after trying to call twice and not getting an answer, I took her to the urgent care place. The Dr. there said he thought the weakness was still due to the virus, but she was getting a secondary ear infection so he gave her some Amoxicillin. She has had a complete turn around in the last 48 hours! She is so much better already I can't believe it! I hate that she ended up missing 9 days of school, and now there's only 7 school days left before Christmas break, so she has lots of make-up work to do in a short time. On the plus side, I had no idea what we were going to eat all weekend, and she brought home several recipes from home ec that she has to make up, so we went and bought all the ingredients and now she has to cook our meals all weekend! Chili, homemade pizza on a tortilla shell, breakfast frittata, and fluffy pancakes. So glad she's doing better and we can soon put that behind us once all the make-up work is done. Trying my best to talk DH into vacationing over spring break next time so I don't have to take the kids out of school!

I haven't officially weighed in for the last 2 weeks, but I'm maintaining well. Not planning to focus on losing til after the first of the year. I'm still about 5 pounds away from what my goal was for the challenge, but this is going to be my PMS week, so it's not too likely that I'll lose it now. The girls' dance studio is going to start offering Zumba classes 3 days a week, so I might start doing that. There's a free introductory class on the 28th, so I'm going to go to that and see if I like it. I've heard it's lots of fun.

DD's b-day is next Sat. (her 13th!) and we're having a slumber party at a hotel Fri. night. I specifically got snacks that I don't like so I'll stay out of them, and I plan to get some fresh fruit to set out that day so I can munch on that all night.

My computer hasn't been working right either, but my brother's got it going for now, so if it stays working hopefully I'll be able to start checking in more regularly again!

Thanks, LuvBaloo, for being our coach of the day yesterday! :cool1:

Its 2 weeks until Christmas, and it may be a stressful time for many of us. So what do you do to handle stress?
And part 2: what's a favourite non-traditional Christmas carol?

I suppose an answer that says "freak out" isn't one of the things that you had in mind when you asked this question. ;) Rest is what I need when I get stressed. Actually I'm not as stressed out today as I was yesterday because I got a good night's sleep.

My favorite nontraditional Christmas song is This Christmas Day by TransSiberian Orchestra.

http://popup.lala.com/popup/360569505298672358

You can play the whole song once with this link, then just 30 second parts like on iTunes.

pjlla,, you've had a great year and been an inspiration to a lot of us! :thumbsup2

princessbride6205, you are right that the workouts do help keep the stress at bay, too!

Went down to weigh in.Was actually excited. Feel good. Felt smaller. Clothes looser. Oh the anticipation. Psyched to get on the scale. Smile on my face. Down .2. :lmao:

Lisa, this is the important stuff -- the rest is just a number! :goodvibes

I hope your Mom's surgery goes well next year. That is stressful. And sorry about your female issues.

I know I haven't been on much --works just been nuts and it's so cold that I just want to get under the electric blanket and stay there after I'm off. I'm down 2 pounds though this week ;-) Off to Portland now for the weekend whee-!

Have fun in Portland. Good job on the 2 pounds!

Was down a bit this week which is a huge step for me as I usually gain on this particular week! I want to keep losing through the end of the year!

Super and now you have a new cycle going! :cool1:

Welcome back, sskem96! Sorry to hear about DD being sick but hopefully the worst is behind you.

Have a great OP day!

Jumping in to do the QOTD before heading out to work! Its a 2-parter

Its 2 weeks until Christmas, and it may be a stressful time for many of us. So what do you do to handle stress?
And part 2: what's a favourite non-traditional Christmas carol?

Christmas is really hectic for my family this year, so the #1 thing I am doing for myself is making sure I get to my WW meetings. I feel like along with these boards, the WW meetings are the only place I really feel sane right now.

My favorite non-tradtional Christmas carol, is the one by Alvin and the Chipmunks. My brother and I LOVED that song growing up and evertime it comes on the radio now, it makes me smile. :goodvibes

I hope evreyone has a great weekend!

Molly :)

Just wanted to check in quick, we're at the hotel still. Doing pretty good on food I think- only one happy hour a day and not 2 lol. Lots of walking. Saw Guy Fieri last night! Was so fun--ended up with floor seats very close. Got my picture taken with him and an autograph twice! Long story....His show is wonderful...they were filming last night for food channel documentary too.
My husband said I was filmed a lot--will have to look out for that. I actually looked pretty goo-- had spent about 2 hours on getting ready yesterday waiting for husband to get rear end out of bed. I was being ridiculously shy around him with the autographs but my husband just kept sort of herding me over there and I'm glad he did lol.

Sorry! I had so much going on yesterday I never got even a minute to sit and post a QOTD. If I can, I'll do it real quick in between having to be here and there today.

Again, sorry. I'm also sorry if you get two today but I want to jump in.

Ok....

QOTD a day late 12/12:

What other little things do you do when you've lost weight to make yourself feel better?

For instance. When I last lost 40 pounds I bleached my teeth every other night, used tan in a can, made sure my legs were always shaved all the way down, that sort of thing.

When I'm not real happy with my image I shave from the knee down, look pale as ever and have no so bright teeth but I just don't care. Weird huh? So, how about you?

Hi everyone. I am asking for some pixie dust for ds2. Last Tuesday night he was asked to go to Gambia Africa over winter break. He will be there with Engineers without Borders from his college. We think they will be getting ready to set up a water treatment plant. This could lead to his Junior or Senior project at college.

Here's where the problem comes in. He didn't have his passport. He came home Wednesday night and we got all the paperwork done and he took it to the post office on Thurday to get things settled and then he was sending it to a company that could rush it. Things got screwed up at the post office and the company is sending it back to ds to reseal it and send it back tomorrow. I am worried that the school post office will not get it or lose it.

Please send pd his way. If he can mail it on Monday and the company gets it on Tuesday he will have his passport on the 21st and then we can rush his visa and he could leave on the 4th.

Thanks for all the good thoughts.

Its 2 weeks until Christmas, and it may be a stressful time for many of us. So what do you do to handle stress?
And part 2: what's a favourite non-traditional Christmas carol?

Part 1 - drinking and being with my older Dsis who keeps me sane! (yesterday I was driving to pick her up , we carpool, and I rear ended someone, in her van, in a minor way but still.........much crying ensued on my part. She was so cool about it!) What would I do without her-I told her so...
Part 2 - fav non trad Christmas Carol - There's Always Tomorrow from the Rudolf animated special:
From Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer

There's always tomorrow,
For dreams to come true,
Believe in your dreams
Come what may.

There's always tomorrow,
With so much to do,
And so little time in a day.

We all pretend
The rainbow has an end
And you'll be there my friend someday.

There's always tomorrow,
For dreams to come true,
Tomorrow is not far away.

QOTD a day late 12/12:

What other little things do you do when you've lost weight to make yourself feel better?

Last time I lost weight significantly I went and had false nails done. It's so NOT me and yet I felt so feminine and classy. I've always bitten my nails so they never look good. Having beautiful nails was great!princess:

So, does this mean that when I was a size 10, I was really a 6!! :rotfl: I've never been in single digits!!:cool1:

Good luck on the run this weekend, corinna. Looks like a pretty cool weekend here, but might be good for running. Where is the race you're doing?

If you held up your old size 10's to some new size 6's, yes, I daresay the are roughly the same. Not all brands of course - but my Levi's, it is definitely true.

Thanks for the good wishes for the run - it was a pretty good one. The temp was above zero this year - I ended up a bit too warm once again, though. I should have ditched the middle layer instead of the top windproof. Oh well. I came in under 30 minutes with a new PR of 29:27. Not bad considering I got stuck behind a phalanx of slower runners for a while and that the roads were sloppy - there was some clear pavement, some packed snow and some gray mush in the middle, which was the slick stuff. I didn't fall, passed people on the uphill and consistently through the 2nd half. I count it a victory.

Jumping in to do the QOTD before heading out to work! Its a 2-parter

Its 2 weeks until Christmas, and it may be a stressful time for many of us. So what do you do to handle stress?
And part 2: what's a favourite non-traditional Christmas carol?

Oh, the stress. I don't know that I have anything fresh for that. Break things down into manageable steps. Don't do the stuff that doesn't HAVE to get done. Make sure to get enough REST.

Non-traditional carol: I also love the 12 Days After Christmas - we sang it in chorus when I was in 5th or 6th grade and I've never forgotten it.

My favorite as a kid was probably "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer."

Even though I missed the QOTD where it was asked if WE inspired anyone to lose weight/get healthy, I just wanted to say that ALL OF YOU inspire me DAILY.... to eat healthier and get more exercise. I love hearing about your successes and your troubles. When you succeed, it inspires me to do better and succeed. And when you struggle I learn from you and I am inspired when I think of things to say to encourage you and comfort you. I love that you feel comfortable enough with all of us to share your hard times and your troubles. It is nice to be trusted. It is definitely a win-win situation.

Pamela! This is so sweet and so true, and so the beauty of the DIS Biggest Loser challenge.

QOTD a day late 12/12:

What other little things do you do when you've lost weight to make yourself feel better?

It's a good question. It's kind of like when the house is a disaster, it's all you can do to even wipe the counters. I noticed last week that when I was 30, 40, 50 pounds heavier, I wore whatever jeans and schlumpy t-shirts a lot. These days, I feel like I've got a few outfits that look good and when I don't have any of them available to wear, I'm more displeased with wearing the schlumpy clothes than you'd expect. Given that schlumpy clothes probably look better on me now than they did last year at this time! I need to get some more nice, warm clothes!

Please send pd his way. If he can mail it on Monday and the company gets it on Tuesday he will have his passport on the 21st and then we can rush his visa and he could leave on the 4th.

Oh, good luck to your son with this! All the paperwork and beaurocracy - hopefully they will be able to expedite it and get it in time. pixiedust:

Oh, as for W/I - I was up .2 this week. I am still under my goal weight and had that monthly issue, so I'm not too concerned, but it's not the best feeling even so. However, I am turning my brain around on this. It is pretty much a maintain and at this point, being UNDER my initial goal, a maintain is as good as a loss. I need to get used to maintaining. Feeling good about being up or down just .2 is the first step. :)

Been a crazy weekend! First time really on my computer. Haven't had any time to work out this weekend. I was up about 2 lbs for the weekend as of this morning. Today was church, Trader Joe's, return stuff from my book fair, make a quick lunch then go back to church for the Lessons and Carols service. DD1 sang in the choir for the first time! SO proud! DD2 even behaved herself but mainly cuz she isn't feeling well. Fever going up again and still coughing so I think we'll keep her home tomorrow. Parents are here to help out. Dinner was a pineapple juice and coconut rum and some goodies at church.
Tomorrow will consist of a trip to Wal-Mart with my mother followed by a massage (giving not receiving (RATS)), post office to mail cards to DH's relatives in UK and then drop off tuition check for preschool.
On the crappy end, tree fell again while we were at church. DH was alone! Will be surprised if it lasts another 12 days! Already decided that we are going to get an artificial tree for next year. This year has done it for us! Plus if we are going to Disney the first week in December next year we can decorate it early and it will be all ready done when we return!:santa: Only 1 ornament broke so not too bad! Still dropping needles but it's hanging in there. It will come down the morning after Christmas if not Christmas night at this rate!

It was a busy weekend for me. We headed out on Friday evening to go to Prince George and drove through blowing snow for an hour and half to get there. DH took the girls shopping for my Christmas present and I went shopping with my sis & sis-in-law & my baby niece. It was fun and we went out for a reasonably healthy dinner (soup and bagel). Saturday sis & my mom took turns watching my girls while DH & I went and got all our Christmas shopping done :woohoo:, and today we went and ended up doing a bit more shopping and I wound up with a new winter coat that isn't frumpy! :woohoo: Then drove an hour to get home, and it was off to my younger DD's soccer Christmas party, and then home, when she threw up  but I think she just got too worn out and will be okay tomorrow.

Jumping on to quickly answer the QOTD and post the missing weighins.

Sorry! I had so much going on yesterday I never got even a minute to sit and post a QOTD. If I can, I'll do it real quick in between having to be here and there today.

Again, sorry. I'm also sorry if you get two today but I want to jump in.

QOTD a day late 12/12:

What other little things do you do when you've lost weight to make yourself feel better?

Usually when I've lost weight I do feel better. I'm trying to put effort into how I dress, because if I dress better I automatically feel better. In my job, its a dirty environment, so I'm always in jeans and lose shirt with my hair in a pony tail and no makeup. So I'm really trying on weekends to dress up just a little. Its still often jeans and a shirt, but the shirts are nice and not big and sloppy. :goodvibes

DONAC - sending some pixiedust to your son, hopefully the mail gets it there in time :goodvibes

CORRINAC - congrats on your new PR! :cool1

UGH! Up most of the night with a sick 5 year old. 101.7 temp and horrible cough. Got sick once but that was it. From what I can tell her fever is down in the low 90s though that's still high for her. She did let me go back to bed at 4:30 when she wanted to sleep in her own bed again. Woke her a bit to take her temp but she fell instantly back to sleep.

I have 1 hot stone massage to give today at noon so I have to go in at 11. DD1 has dancing. I actually was asleep by 10 last night as I was wiped out. The alarm went off at 6 and I hit it off and fell right back to sleep until 7:05. Dh had to drive DD1 to school as her bus comes at 7:20.

I'm hoping to get in a workout today at some point maybe this afternoon. Waiting to get through to the doctor's office to make an appt for DD2. We're worried about pneumonia or bronchitis!

Hope everyone has a healthy day!

I NEED CAFFEINE!

Thank you, princessbride6205, for being our coach this week and welcome to all of our coaches in the upcoming week!
hey, thanks for the reminder. This month is flying by.

Jumping in to do the QOTD before heading out to work! Its a 2-parter

Its 2 weeks until Christmas, and it may be a stressful time for many of us. So what do you do to handle stress?
And part 2: what's a favourite non-traditional Christmas carol?
I'm not usually a high stress type, and love the holidays, decorating, getting together with friends, and having christmas eve at my house. This year is so different without my mom, and I'm trying to be positive and upbeat for my son, and reminiscing about memories with my mom too without crying too much in front of him. We just watched a video of him and my mom last christmastime singing jinglebells, and he's being such a goober, bouncing up and down and putting rabbit ears on her head, but it's so funny and made us laugh. So I'm not sweating the small stuff. Saturday I went to a party of a family friend that I usually don't go to, but my mom used to, and that was nice. Also staying connected to my siblings. We're going to see the christmas carol on wed with my sis and then out to dinner. On the weightloss front, I'm not baking cookies til next week, and I am going to continue to exercise to counteract the ones I eat. I'm also hoping to maintain through the holidays.

My favorite song, is the Partridge families My Christmas Card to You. The album was always my favorite growing up, and my sister gave me the cd a few years ago, and I play it all the time. I'm a bit of a geek.

Went down to weigh in. Was actually excited. Feel good. Felt smaller. Clothes looser. Oh the anticipation. Psyched to get on the scale. Smile on my face. Down .2. :lmao:

WTH? Guess what other surprise I got. A period this morning when I just had a period a week and a half ago. Obviously my body is whacked. I can't decide whether it is stress (My mom has to have open heart surgery in a couple of months - weeks of waiting for test results) or the lovely menopause. Of which I always thought was friggin' less periods - not a double batch for crying outloud! Why would God grant such a lovely thing? :lmao:;) Don't answer. I'm a tad too hormonal for the answer.

:goodvibes to all!
down .2!! Whoo hoo!!! :rotfl: You're so funny. On the woman thing, I know exactly how you feel. I went to disney in jan absolutely sure I wouldn't get my period, and I got it. Hate it, but hated spending 7 dollars in the pop gift shop for 12 tampons. :lmao:
:hug:Hugs to you and your mom. Such a stressful time, and waiting can be so hard. I'll be sending good thoughts your way that all goes well.

I did my weigh in this morning, and I was up 0.7pounds. I did okay with the eating but didn't get enough exercising in. I have definitely NOT done my share for the group goal - in fact I'm currently up 1.3 from the start of BL8. I am hoping to kick up the exercising this week, and stick with the good eating, and come in next week with a loss ::yes::
Love your attitude. I'm going to quote lisaviolet and say that maintaining is underrated. up 1.3 is a maintain to me, and I always think if I wasn't doing these challenges, and I've ended higher on some of them, I know I would be packing on the pounds. Here's to a loss on friday!!:thumbsup2

What other little things do you do when you've lost weight to make yourself feel better?
I tend to buy something nice to wear, new jeans, a nice sweater. I do find when I am lighter, I feel more flirtatious, and think about getting back out in the dating world, and I will find the time to do that. But it is work to get a sitter, and get out to meet someone, and then to go on a date that is a flop, and think, I'm paying 10$ a hour to sit here, and it's just not worth the effort, so I don't do it.

:)
:cool1: that is awesome, Corinna. You must be so proud.

Well, haven't done great in the eating, but have been doing some wii fit, and hoping that will counteract the eating. I signed up for the exercise challenge, and am almost halfway to my monthly goal, so that's good for me. Have a great day everyone.

Good Monday morning all! :goodvibes

These are the last few days of this challenge and it is a hard time of year to really pour it on but we can do it! :thumbsup2

Hope that you had a nice week-end, Cinderella Girl! :) That Alvin and the Chipmunks song is stuck in my head now!

50sjayne, sounds like you are having a great time in Portland and DH was enjoying showing off his wife! ;)

QOTD a day late 12/12:

What other little things do you do when you've lost weight to make yourself feel better?

No worries, Lynsey! It was a pretty quiet week-end on this thread. I think a lot of us had holiday activities.

I keep my hair in good shape -- cut and colored. Things are always better when your hair looks nice. Also, it's short so I can get it done quickly and be out the door.

pixiedust: to you and your DS donac that he gets his passport woes worked out.

 to you, mullysisters, for your fender bender. Glad that no one was hurt and sounds like DS was understanding. :hippie:

corinnak, congratulations on your new PR! I can't even walk around the block when it is cold so I really admire you for running a race! :flower3:

Tracey, pixiedust:, that you DD feels better soon and that your tree lasts until Santa arrives! Thank goodness your folks are there to help you!

Just popping in and saying hi. So hi! :goodvibes

Hello, lisaviolet! :flower3: Nice to see you!

and today we went and ended up doing a bit more shopping and I wound up with a new winter coat that isn't frumpy! :woohoo:

Woo! Hoo! Shannon, for a new coat that isn't frumpy! It feels nice to have cute things, doesn't it?

My favorite song, is the Partridge families My Christmas Card to You. The album was always my favorite growing up, and my sister gave me the cd a few years ago, and I play it all the time. I'm a bit of a geek.

Squeal! David Cassidy! :faint: Oh, I lived for The Brady Bunch and The Patridge Family every week when I was 12. I still remember all the words so you aren't the only geek around here, Kathy! We're still mod, baby! :cool2:

I am coach today so here is the QOTD:

Share one thing that you have learned during this challenge that you can continue to use?

For me the answer is exercise. It's important, it's got to be done consistently, and it is up to me to figure out what exercise I can do that I will enjoy for the rest of my life -- that is the hard part!

I have two busy days at work and then I can settle down and be excited about our trip. Robert is already excited and was telling me "Mom, you need to be more excited. Ten days with your family at the most magical place on Earth!" It's hard not be excited when you see how happy he is. :goodvibes

Have a great day!

QOTD: Share one thing that you have learned during this challenge that you can continue to use?
Holding myself accountable - knowing I have a weigh in each week has really helped me focus. It's stopped me from letting a bad eating day turn into a week or more. I find myself getting back on plan more quickly after slip ups or splurges.

Okay, Loser friends, I could use some advice. After starting a weight loss journey together, DH has now been effortlessly maintaining for several months. He just barely watches what he eats and doesn't exercise (though his day job is a little more active than a desk job like mine). He has recently become less supportive of my continued efforts to exercise. Not that he's telling me not to work out, but he just doesn't get why it's important to me. The only time that works for me to exercise is after DD goes to bed, which means it's 9:30pm by the time I'm done and showered. Sometimes I roll with the late time, and other times it frustrates me that I have no time to just relax in the evening. I had a rough weekend (didn't complete my "must do" list and didn't get to my less important to do list). DH thinks that if there are important things on my "must do" list, then I should just skip exercising. I explained why it's not optional, but he said he thinks I don't know how to prioritize my to do list. (This was all part of a bigger "discussion" we are having, but I thought I'd only bring up the exercise part here.) I'm not sure what I'm asking for from you guys, but I really needed someone to talk to.
