Biggest Cost-cutting mistake EVER...

I did quite a bit of research before finally settling with a cute LG Prime phone and pay as you go service from AT&T. For my DH and I it's only $30/month and we get rollover minutes.

If you are only looking to use it for emergency only...just infrequent voice and txt, Virgin Mobile has inexpensive phones and plans (mine is the very no frills Kyocera Jax $9.99)

You have to buy $20 every 90 days to keep the account active, so mine averages $6 per month. And I usually wind up with a bunch of money/time left over that I can then use on vacation, etc.

They do have fancy Droid phones too (more $$$), with plans starting at $25...dd has the 300 voice/unlimited data & txt.

We've been VM customers for about 7 years, never an issue.

I went to Cricket for cell phone service. At best, the person I am talking to understands me enough to say "what?" - most of the time, it is "are you still there?!?". I am SO mad at myself. I paid $80 for the phone. Now, I need to figure out what I want to do.

What service (budget) do you have?

I've been a t-mobile pay as you go customer since 2003. Have never had a problem with the service. Got my most recent phone at Target...nothing fancy. I am able to keep my phone number when I upgrade to a new phone every couple of years which is nice.

That has been the opposite of my experience. As far as Tracfone is concerned, it is a cheap way to go that is true. I have used it for years simply and only because I didn't want to be tied to a monthly plan but I have to say Tracfone has been nothing but a headache for most of those years when it comes time to add minutes. It doesn't matter if I do it online or straight on my phone. If I buy the minutes at Walmart or at Trafone. I always always have to make several calls to customer service which from what I understand isn't even in this country, to get my minutes applied. It is ridiculous. Cell coverage has been iffy and voicemail is unreliable. If you want a cell just for emergencies I suppose it would work but I am not one to reccomned it for convience because it is far from it.

I find it really easy to add minutes, I buy them online and put in my phone # they are added right away. I have done it for yrs without a problem, DH, DD and my sister all have TracFones. It adds them to your phone immediately. We have never had a problem with reception either either at home or when traveling. The only compliant DD has is she wants the keypad to text and they don't offer it. It is by far the easiest on the budget. $100 a year for usually 1000 minutes (double airtime phone 400 x2 and they always have a bonus minute special). Texts are 1/2 minute. Just try not to call customer service unless you are fluent in a language other than English!

I am glad that other people have better luck with Tracfone. I barely use a cell so I have no reason to tie myself to the plan which is the reason I have stayed with Tracfone. I have an issue getting my minutes added every single time. This last time it took 3 days calling twice a day to customer service. Finally they showed up and then I wasnt able to make or receive calls. So I had to call back yet Again. The funniest thing was I am on with customer service and say "my minutes were finally added but now my phone will not make or receive calls." To which the customer service guy replies. "OK I wuld like to help you with that. Are you using your Tracfone to make this call?"

I could hear myself screaming inside my head!!!!

That's the point I CAN"T MAKE OR RECEIVE CALLS! It is set up now but what a pain in my patookie

I would love to do this we have 3 phones on our plan DS17 has unlimited texting we pay $145/month. DH got a new phone in October which adds another 2 years to the contract so we would have to wait till then or pay the cancellation to get rid of the plan and DS and I would have to buy used phones if our phones died before then maybe it would be worth paying the fee to save in the long run. That's the beauty of those stupid call centers where the reps aren't allowed to deviate from the script.
