The Unofficial Guide to Disneyland says that Big Thunder is a tame roller coaster. I have never been on it before and was wondering if this is true. Also, are there any big drops during the ride? I watched a video on youtube but couldn't tell.

no big drop, can tight curves that seem fast. it's in the open so you can see all around so you could watch it before you ride it. i'd say its pretty tame versus other coaster from say great america.

Yep, it's pretty tame, and the closer you sit to the front the tamer/slower it is. It's the only coaster-type ride my mom will go on.

Although it isn't a big thrill roller coaster, it is still really fun. Don't miss an opportunity to ride!:thumbsup2

I dunno, it was a bit wilder than I thought it was going to be. I read the Unofficial Guide, too, and because of that description, I tried to get my DD10 to go on it. She watched it while we were in line, and politely declined. Afterward I was glad she had-- she wouldn't have enjoyed it. Like the previous poster said-- not much in the way of drops, but the turns are pretty tight and it's kind of jerky in places. I liked it a lot, but then, California Screamin' is my idea of a fabulous time, too. :cool1:

It is an excellant ride! As IASWAM said, dont miss a chance to ride! It is especially fun in the dark! IMO anyways.

I agree 110% :goodvibes I love BTMRR! Even though it doesn't have any big drops, I still get butterflies in my stomach every time I go on.

I'm scared of roller coasters, but I can tollerate BTM. There's a couple drops that got my tummy, but I had a blast. And the more time I rode, the better it got!:rotfl:

It was my ds's favorite ride, till he discovered Mulholland Madness in DCA - he rode it about 6 times during our trip, and he's 5!

It's pretty tame. My 7 year old twins love it. The only complaint I'd have about it, is it gives me a headache sometimes. Not sure why. Maybe because it is jerky like some have said.

oooooooo! I have never ridden in the dark. That's a definite must try!

It may be tame but all the Disney coasters are tame. That said, BTMRR is a classic and one of the best attractions at DLR. I've been loving that ride since it opened in the late 70s and it still delivers, I've ridden it several times in the last week and we still love it!

The surprises of the track with it's twists and turns and the thorough themeing make this ride an experience you must enjoy. Nothing to fear, just have fun with the whole environment and pretend you are really on a runaway train in the old west, it still floats my boat! Notice all the animals on the ride, there are lots if you really look beyond the obvious ones.

My favorite part of this ride is when you go down into the dark mineshaft and you can't see anything and suddenly the train turns to the right and everyone flies over to the left side of the train carts right before the second hill climb, I love it every time!

BTMRR is must do on the must do list for DL, period.

Thanks everyone! I think my mom and I might try it on our trip next year. It sure sounds like a fun ride.

I agree with the above posters. No big drops, but some quick turns to keep it fun. My whole family loves BTMRR even though we also like the bigger coasters.

Bigger as in Six Flags or Cedar Point or bigger as in Space Mountain and Cali Screamin'?

I love Disney coasters but I'm probably in the minority of people who love ALL coasters, I love big, big coasters that really put a little fear in your heart too! I love all types of rides, I like Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan all the way up the spectrum to X2 and Goliath at Magic.

I find that people who like thrill rides kinda hate Disney rides as a whole and people who love Disney parks don't like the parks with the real big thrill rides. I roll with both crowds!:yay:

I guess when I was writing the post I was referring to coasters at Disney parks, but come to think of it, I really enjoy the bigger coasters at other theme parks a lot, I just haven't been to other parks for a very long time!

soooooooooo fun!! BTMRR is one of my absolute favorite coasters!! I'll skip things like Space and CA Screamin' but I want to do BTMRR at least once a trip! :)

I couldn't agree with you more on that one. Lucikly I married a guy who loves Disney and other amusement parks. Anyway, BTMRR is tame compared to those of Cedar Fair and Six Flags. I do remember one former CM(friend) of BTMRR back in my days at DL told a guest while we were at Magic Mtn that it is comparable to Gold Rusher at Magic Mountain.
