The Disneyland calendar shows Big Thunder Mountain Railroad as being down for refurbishment on May 31st. Does anyone know for how long?

While it is disappointing when a favorite ride is down, going in off-season has its risks which are discussed on this forum on a daily basis...and there is no reason to be angry as your emoticon suggests you are...

If you want to be able to experience all of the rides and see all of the shows, visit DLR during high season and learn how to work with crowds. If you want to visit when it is least crowded, expect to miss some rides and shows.

If I was to guess, this is just a guess, it will open by the 3rd because that is going to be a huge weekend for the parks.

June 1st was just posted today, I dont understand why its closed but I was hoping it would just be the day its one of my DBF's faves Bummer. :confused3

Memorial Day is hardly "off-season" it is the beginning of summer.

Memorial Day is hardly "off-season" it is the beginning of summer.

Memorial Day is sort of off-season. It's not part of spring break time, and while some people look at it as the start of summer, it's really just before summer. Many schools remain in session until sometime in June, and the season of summer doesn't actually start until the second half of June. Martin Luther King weekend and President's Day weekends are also holiday weekends, but that doesn't make them peak season. I would still call January and February "off-season" as much as there is one at Disney anymore, and May kind of falls in with that as well. All that being said, Disney seems more and more willing these days to have at least one ride down during all times of the year; the Fantasyland ride refurbs of last summer are good examples. I think with the sheer quantity of offerings at the park and the magnitude of ongoing construction, this may just be more necessary.

Good way of stating the issue. To Disney it is still off season. I do not know about everyone but my summer does not start until it gets above 80 degrees each day, tired of the cold weather lately.

:thumbsup2 I hear ya! We awoke to flurries this morning. Old Man Winter needs to go away.

OP- Sorry for the disappointment. I think we will begin to see short refurbs throughout the year more often. There just isn't enough true down time anymore; you can't have half the park down at the same time in order to fit refurbs into ever shrinking windows of off season.

I don't think you can say Memorial Day is "Off Season" any more... Just look at the schedule... The only ride scheduled to be closed for refurbishment is "Star Tours" which we all know reopens 4 days later. DL is open til midnight from the Friday before Memorial Day and every day thereafter, except for Tuesday and Wednesday when it closed at 11pm, and Thursday at 9pm (still very summertime like hours). Even Goofy's Sky school comes off the refurb schedule in time for Memorial Day weekend! :thumbsup2

Don't think its suppose to happen this year but there is a big rumor that Tony Baxter wants to do a major overhaul of this attraction. It would be closed for like half the year when they do it.

The OP did not say Memorial Day. They said May 31st which is the Tuesday after. And that has been off-season. It is common for DLR to take rides for refurb that week. Last year there was a posted on this forum steamed that Indy was down that week. It is off-season. You will not see BTMRR going down like this once you get to mid-June.

The memorial day weekend crowds leave midway through monday and the rest of the week and week after are not crowded really. One of my fav times to visit. So yes, the day after memorial day remains "off season" at Disneyland until that friday when they open new rides prior to the huge crowds of summer. Which generally come once schools are let out in mid june. You get the perks of summer without the heavy crowds right after memorial day :)

That and the longer than usual (off season) park hours... But Shhh.... That's to be a secret! Hahaha! BTW... I'll be there!

June 3 calendar has been posted at disneyland.com and Big Thunder is still on the refurb list. :sad2:

So can one be upset now that it is scheduled to be closed during Disneyland "Summer Season?"
Well since you asked...I would say that since summer season the last two years has started on June 11 and 12, and this year DLR is cranking up hours on June 3 because of ST2 and LMAUA opening, I suspect that June 3 is really "pre-summer season" as DLR knows they will not truly crank up until mid-June. If BTMRR is closed on June 10 then I would be upset.

Really, if anyone goes to DLR the first week of June any year you can look at the history. Something is almost always closed. Last year it was Indy. And we had a thread just like this last year on the topic of Indy's closing. A very disappointed DISer was here posting and very upset about Indy - the major ride they wanted to not miss. That is why I wrote the thread at the bottom of this thread on "Choosing When To Visit DLR". So we could minimize this happening in the future.

That is your guide. What DLR has done the first week of June in recent years.

New Al Lutz: Summer Season Starts June 3, LMAUA/ST2 rides AP Previews & Soft Openings

For anyone else out there who has questions on this issue, please, please, PLEASE read this next thread so you can stack the deck in your favor to avoid refurbs if that is important to you:

You have the right to be upset, but Disney does not March to the rest of the worlds "seasons". As you can see they dictate their own. If it is that unsettling, I would move the dates, another reason we stay away from those grey zone dates.
