Ok, so we are 5 weeks out, and are desperately trying to make sure we have enough spending money...(DH is more worried than I b/c we have free dining, and the trip is paid for, so we should be ok...) Yesterday, I get home, and the dog is limping. She was playing in the yard and suddenly started yelping. DH and DS did not see what happened, but she would not walk on her RR Leg. Took her to the Vet ($270.00 later) She has a broken leg. :sad2: :sad1: She is at Angel Memorial today, awaiting a specialist to see if she needs surgery. (She is only 7 months old) The fracture is an oblique, non-displaced, so we are hoping she won't need surgery. Without surgery we are looking at $1300, with surgery, we are looking at $4000 :scared1: . I can't believe this happened at all, never mind 5 weeks before our trip. We applied for (and got) Care Credit, so we can pay for it over time, but now when we kennel her for the trip, I am going to worry. I guess this will teach her to chase the squirrels in the backyard. As near as we can figure, she was running after one (which she would never be able to catch anyway), and tripped in one of the holes she has dug in the backyard. She is part lab and part husky, so she is a digger, and she loves to chase and bark at anything small and furry.

I'm feeling your pain!! Our dogs always seem to injure themselves on national holidays...you know...when the regular vets are closed. So, we have to bring them to the emergency vet, which generally charges us 3 times the amount we would have pd. at our vet! All things aside, it sounds like you would be ready for a vacation. It may also be okay for your dog to be kenneled for a while so he cannot move around as much and heal his leg.

Poor doggy!!! It's amazing what we will do for our furry friends. I hope she doesn't need surgery! I wish pet insurance was as normal as human insurance.

LOL though about her tripping in one of her own holes.

That does stink but what can you do? Pets are just like kids, you just never know. Of course you have to pay for it. Could you get a friend or neighbor to watch the puppy while your gone instead of the kennel? Puppy may be more comfortable at a home.

When we went last year, the dining plan had just started. Our trip and dining were totally paid for and we brought about $500 with us. We came home with at least half of that $500. The only thing we bought there out of pocket were a few souvies and I had one of those charicature(spelling??) things done. With your food and snacks paid for, what else really do you need money for? I brought with me some t shirts and other things that I bought ahead of time and i also packed a small suitcase with juiceboxes and snacks, so we were fine without a lot of spending money.

Agree with pp, unless you all just have to buy many souvies or gifts, you won't need much money.

I never spend all mine, and I don't take alot. I had only budgeted $200.00 for DS10 and I BOTH together this trip coming up. And that may even go lower, if he decides to do kickboxing classes, cause he will need gloves and wraps.

It's totally up to you on how much money you want to spend on sovieners. To some of us $ 200 may seem like a lot and to others not enough. Other than that, it sounds like you have the cost of everything else pretty much taken care of.

As far as your poor dog having to be in a kennel, it depends on who you have her boarded though. Sometimes we use a private boarder who gives our dog a lot of personal attention and other times we find someone we know( usually just out of high school) to stay at our house and take care of her. We prefer to use the kids, because it's better for our dog and also they're willing to be paid less than it would cost to board her, as long as we let them eat whatever's in the fridge :rotfl2: .

Hopefully since she's such a young dog, she'll heal fast. :goodvibes

Thanks for all the advice....I know the spending money will work itself out...(My DH worries b/c there are 6 of us, 3 adults and 3kids and he feels like we need to make sure we don't have to worry about anything. MIL swears she will have her own spending money to bring!!) The Vet called, and she is going to splint it. She thinks that is the way to go, since she is young and the fracture is not displaced. So we will just have to keep her quiet (as best we can!!), and let her heal. I think the kennel will be okay, because it is part of an animal hospital, so I am sure they see injured animals all the time. I am going to call them and double check. I think I would feel better with her being in the care of professionals, than at home with someone looking in on her. She can be mischievous when left to her own devices, and I would worry about her safety.

Wow
Sounds like you took a Page from MY book, My dog Nico Broke his RR leg ( broken femur) 2 weeks ago playing with our other dog Jake......Should of cost us $5.000 but Thank God my Friend works for a Vet and it was $1.000 instead, (pins instead of plates....) Still alot of money, but thank god we can also pay it off Nico is also 7 months old and 65 pounds, Pretty big puppy and will be anywhere from 80 to 100 pounds....we are going to the world in about 5 weeks also... I know I was thinking the same thing....We have to board the dogs for 10 days and now this big bill.... , Our trip is also paid for and also have the dining.......Just take a deep breath, Things happen and go and have a great time at the world in 5 weeks......you will need it.....We just got our dog back from surgey about 5 days ago and its gonna be a rough 2 months, My vet said our dog has to have complete rest and can only come out of his crate to go to the bathroom and to eat......and its been hard to do....since the other dog wants to play with him...Also just a sugestion, Ask the Vet to give you sedatives for the dog when you take him home. It will to keep him/her calm ....It does help....
Prays for you and your dog
