Big Love watchers

When Barb said yes to Nikki's question about is it over it was definitely about the affair. The whole money issue between Bill and Roman is certainly not settled. I think that is a major driver in the show and will continue throughout the series. The thing I found sort of strange about last nights episode was Wanda's reaction to Joe saying they were going to stay in town and he would get a job and they could get an apartment. Given all the problems and craziness of the lifestyle back at Juniper Creek you would have thought she would have jumped at the opportunity to distance herself and her life from it but instead she was saying no she wanted to go back. In a subtle way the shows writers are showing the mental effect of the lifestyle and how it can brainwash people into thinking tis the only way to live. From what you could see on the previews last night it looks like Nikki gets in trouble when she runs away and that leads to the police coming to Bills house. Her mood swings look like they may be the start of big trouble for Bill's Big Love.

I wonder why Joe doesn't have more than one wife already? I know he told Barb he doesn't think he will, but if Wanda is so "into" it, I would have thought they would have taken another wife by now. Or maybe they'll wait til after the baby comes.

This show makes me wonder how common this lifestyle really is. What do you think? I just can't imagine this lifestyle working. Maybe I just live in a "bubble" but do you think these compounds and polygamy really exists in today's society? :confused3

You can call me nieve. It's okay. :3dglasses (those are my "blinders").

I Love this show  I think it is such a HOOT!!!!

My DH thinks I am crazy, but oh well, I don't miss an episode and then watch it on- ondemand again!!!!

I love the characters, of course I hate Nikky, but that is her story line :confused3 Margine is so naive and funny, and Barb is just going along with things sometime (IMO). The Roman story line is weird, He'll end up helping nikky with her CC bills and then Bill will owe him again is what I think.

And why don't they have grass in the back yard?? Is it a symbol for something???

:confused3

Yes. Someone here on this thread said it was to symbolize the compound. They don't have grass either. Looks wierd, doesn't it?

I think Roman is going to help Nicky with her CC bills but she'll have to do something to bill in exchange for it.

Thanks for the link to the HBO website, Kim!

I never thought about this before reading the bios on the cast members. Why on earth would Bill allow Nikki and Margene's kids to have his last name? I can understand that the ones that he had with Barb would, but if you're trying to keep your lifestyle a secret, why would you let the second and third wives' kids have your last name? Seems to me that when the kids get to school someone would pick up on that especially since he owns a major retail outlet in the area.

First of all I have to admit that I haven't watched this show, we don't get HBO. However, I grew up in southern Utah and lived in pretty close proximity to a very large polygamist compound in Colorado City, UT. Hopefully, I can answer some of your questions. First of all, someone asked if these kinds of "compounds" really exist. The answer is YES! They are all over the place, not just in Utah. They are not members of the LDS church which gave up Polygamy in the late 1800's. The houses and yards in a polygamist compound are never finished. That way, they can evade some tax issues because the residence is not finished. I don't know if that's why there is no grass in the show, but that's the first thought that came to my mind when I read about it here.

The lifestyle of the polygamists is not one that I agree with. I have seen it up close and know that there is a lot of abuse that goes on. Not just with the young girls, but also the young boys. They are indoctrinated at an early age, and anyone that tries to leave are dealt with harshly.

From what you all say, the show sounds interesting.

From another thread, Griggle explained the whole dirt backyard as follows:
The dirt is meant to represent the unconcious way Juniper Creek is recreated by the family. They try to seperate themselves from the compound - moving to a better neighborhood, putting in a pool (a suburbian *sign* of wealth)....but, no matter how much they try and dis-associate themselves from the past, the heritage remains.

HTH!

I think Joe started drinking when he left to play football. The temptations of the outside. They do not drink or use caffeine.

I'm sure you're right about the symbolism that is discussed. I was just explaining from my personal experience why the real polygamists never finish their houses and yards. I like the whole symbol of the unfinished yard that you quoted.

I had DH watch last weeks episode. He thought If everyone agreed he sees nothing wrong with Polygamy. He does not understand why any man would WANT more than 1 wife. :confused3 They are a lot of work.

Of course he means ADULT woman. The next day MSN online had an article about Big Love saying some people are not Jealous. DH is & so am I...we can't share each other.

It is so interesting.

I finally got myself totally caught up with all of the Big Love episodes. Interesting series and topic. My thoughts on some of the characters not mentioned:

Adalene (Nicki's mom)- Holy cow...she really seems ice cold! Ain't No love coming from that mom!

Actually, this is a common tone I am getting, as large as these families are there does not seem to be a real emotional bond between most of the family members. Sheesh, talk about conditional love.

Heather- (co-worker of Sarah at the fast food restaurant) They seem to be going back and forth, but in the end I think she is going to be BIG trouble. Then, totally twisted thought but....part of me wonders if she could end up being a potential wife, down the road? Even though she says she is totally against Polygamy, she seems to have a big need to fit in somewhere....she would be easy for Nicki AND Margene to push around at first, but then I could see her being pretty nasty herself. Maybe she will never become part of the family, but I could see her vying for it. Also, having a state trooper dad could prove helpful to Bill...and also a thorn in his side.

I know, that is a twisted thought...you just never know.

One more thought...were they suggesting an incestuous relationship bewteen Roman and Nicki when the were laughing on the bed and Bill walked in?

I don't think incest is out of the question with these freaks.

That's the vibe I got :faint:

Did anyone else laugh as hard as I did when Nicki said "Frank, don't bark at Lois" ? :rotfl:

I guess you would have to withdrawl emotion or not get emotional with sharing a husband & then your children. HOw about all those ladys in the house with Roman. Was that wierd & scary?

QUESTION: Where was # 1 son at Easter? Was that explained? Bill & Barb's Kid.
