We are still considering whether to skip our trip to WDW next year and trying something different. Would love to cruise again BUT so many points or $$s it really is not in the budget.
So are considering the Big Ceder- in Missouri.

Any comments from folks who have been there would be appreciated!

Linda,

We have been to Big Cedar Lodge 2x with DVC points, and will be going again next month! We usually just get a room in the Falls Lodge (lowest points). The room is huge (about the size of the rooms at the poly), great themeing, big jacuzzi tub. GREAT views of the Tablerock Lake and the hills.

The kids LOVE it (now 3 and 7). They have a cute miniature golf course with the last hole being inside a HUGE bass fish. You can sign up (fee) for a wagon ride/campfire with a singing cowboy that is always a good time, there is horseback riding, the marina (we've rented a boat each time for a few hours), and nice trails. Of course you are only 10 minutes from Branson too (which gives you a whole variety of stuff to do--even for us folks who aren't into the country thing).

Big Cedar is a first class resort! And with them building their new Wildnerness Club (like DVC), comes a huge new lazy river and pool facility that I believe will be open to all guests of the resort. I can let you know about that by the end of July.

Dogwood Canyon is a nearby nature preserve with AWESOME bike and walking trails. very beautiful! You will see scenary shots from this place all over the walls at Big Cedar Lodge.

Silver Dollar City is about 10-15 minutes away tops! Nice themed park (not many amusement rides) but a wonderful place to spend the day.

We have never stayed in the fully equipped cabins, but they would certainly hold down the cost of food (though the points are steep). You will love it!

I would love to hear more information about that Lodge. It seems like a very cool place. The internet site doesn't do it much justice.

Would love to try it in like Nov or Dec. Any pics?

Thanks for al l the info. Laura.
How long do you folks typically stay at Big Ceder?
Linda

My family loves Big Cedar. We have been there twice on DVC points (one bdrm cabin and two bdrm cabin) and once in one of the fishing cabins as part of our stay while joining the Wilderness Club (their timeshare with Bluegreen Vacation Club). They have really nice restaurants and their Buzzard Bar with a singing cowboy. When we go to Branson and stay at our timeshare there we still drive to Big Cedar and go to the Buzzard Bar. I have never been in the lodges but the cabins are great. They are rustic log cabins with stuffed animals thoughout. We have only gone for long weekends but I look forward to going down for a full week in our two bedroom cabin. The entire resort is top notch, of course or DVC would not include it.

We have been to Big Cedar 2x on DVC points also.
I absolutely love it there. We also only stay in the Falls Lodge rooms.
The view is beautiful and there is so much you can do.
We went horseback riding t Dogwood Canyon and it was the highlight of the trip. You literally ride up and down the mountain. While the horses are trained and know the trail, you dont have to ride single file like at most places.
We even ran into some big horn steer that are part of the preserve.
There are lots of cute shows in Branson also.
Give it a try. We've only stayed 3 nights each time we have gone, but next time we would like to try at least 5 nights.
There is a winer tour in Branson that you can go on that offers free tasting.
Go carts and mini golf and all kinds of touristy things, plus the outlets.
Sorry for rambling.

Hi, This is my first post (we bought BCV last week!!). I've been reading this GREAT board for a while!

Just this morning I told my DH that we should go to Big Cedar for Thanksgiving using points. WE LOVE BIG CEDAR!! We live only 3 hours away and have been several times. It is beautiful! During the holidays, there are white lights everywhere. It is secluded in the woods overlooking beautiful Tablerock lake. There are several great restaurants, a GREAT giftshop and last time I was there I had a wonderful massage!! We also stay in Falls Lodge, and rooms are HUGE!

It is a very relaxing place. But only a few minutes drive away is outlet shopping, golf and all the fun in Branson. Hope you have a great time!!

Next question --

Since DH is in a power wheelchair is the terrain rough or extremely hilly?
He loves to watch son fish, boats, water activities, etc and especially likes to relax so not concerned about things to do. I have the summer off so get a lot of r and r in -- but the family vacations are his only time to unwind which is one reason he is suggesting an alternative to WDW!!

We would be coming from NC so not sure how far it would be either.
We tried map quest but they sent us North to WestVirginia-- seemed there must be more direct routes than that!!!

Thanks again for all your help and suggestions!
We haven't traded before but think it might be fun to try something different for a change!

Linda,

Last summer we spent three wonderful nights at Big Cedar and then went back in early October for 2 more nights. It is a VERY relaxing vacation resort!!! If you want the excitement, Branson is so very close, but when you want to unwind--Big Cedar is awesome!

You asked about hills. Yes, it is quite hilly...and many of the driving roads actually have water cascading over them as part of a waterfall (VERY cool!). But there are parking lots by all of the restaurants, marinas, registration/gift shop building, etc.. So you would probably want to drive to the marina (rather than have to worry about getting up those hills in a wheelchair when you are done). They also have a shuttle from my recollection also.

If your husband can possibly do it, I would say GO!!!!!! It is wonderful.

Someone also asked about November, December timeframe.

Although we have never stayed at the resort at that time, we have been in Branson for a few nights after Thanksgiving each year. It is a wonderful, magical place to be at christmas. Rockette show is awesome, Silver Dollar City is spectacular at Christmas time (Nov, Dec) and the true meaning of Christmas is interwoven everywhere. I hope to stay at Big Cedar sometime at that time of year. They supposedly do some 12 days of Christmas activity and have a elf storytime thing where they come to your room and do books and cookies at bedtime.

I highly recommend it!!!!!!!!! I've got awesome pictures but no scanner--sorry! (I've sent a bunch to Disney--maybe it will show up in vacation magic one day).

Laura
ps. Every night they bring a special Peppakador (sp?) cookie to your room. It is a swedish (?) tradition and they are wishing cookies. VERY NEAT! And in true "Disney" style I had filled out a glowing comment card for Big Cedar one day. Loved everything. Noted quickly that we missed out on those cookies one night. A few weeks later--a whole box of the things showed up in our mailbox! Very classy place!
