Biergarten Restaurant

this is a really great suggestion! I just pulled up the menu online, and its not very descriptive, so some of the foods sound scarier than they are!

In addition to the videos, googling the German names of the foods should get you pics and better descriptions. For example, spätzle can sound scary until you see it's just plain pasta. It's hard to tell that from the videos since you can't see flavours.

The one thing I would recommend avoiding is sauerbraten...unless you like your pot roast pickled. :-)

My extremely picky daughter (seriously- she was in therapy for her food selectiveness) was able to find some thing. She didn't leave stuffed, but ate. Something that I have found helpful when we try a new restaurant with her is to promise to stop by a "safe" place AFTER we eat if she isnt able to find something she likes. That gives her a safe out, but she my be willing to try something.
Enjoy! The rest of the family loved it!

This is a great idea..... and I think it may work. I also think therapy is in our cards. Sigh. My second child is one and eats me out of house and home! She is going to annihilate the buffet at Biergarten!

DD ate plenty when we were there, and she's in a phase right now that she won't eat much, but I know she had some noodles, potatoes, chicken, bread, and some fruit.

The thing is too, just because two kids are both "picky" doesn't mean they are both picky in the same ways. Different things are challenging to different kids and it can be texture or smell as much as taste that is bothering them.

My child LOVES chicken cutlets so he was excited to try the schnitzel and it was not too far out of his comfort zone. He also loves sliced deli salami at home but I very rarely get it for him and if I do he gets a slice or two along with something healthier like turkey or chicken. He won't touch fruits or veggies but I consider it a win if I can get some protein into him along with his preferred starchy sides.

But the BEST advice I read is to take ALL pressure off of eating and trying new things. I used to try to make it into a thing and cheer him on but I read that was putting a lot of pressure on it so now I just remind him if he wants to try something new, great. If not, no biggie. And he can always change his mind, even if it is already on his plate. He has tried a lot more new things since I have been doing that for long enough to convince him it wasn't going to be a battle. Also finding foods that are similar but just a little different than what he already likes seems to be helpful as well.

It is tough having a picky eater and you really have no clue unless you have one yourself. It's also tough all of the judgement that we get as parents for not just "making" our kids eat. Even my boyfriend, who always took a hard line with his kids and still will have knock down drag 'em out battles with his oldest over food has admitted that kiddo is different, it's obvious that he just can't tolerate certain things at all and it is torture for him. Not just that he'd rather be eating junk, some things are just completely intolerable to him. But we are working on it.

Its hard to tell with kids, isn't it? My picky kids were nervous about Biergarten but really enjoyed the schnitzel and a few other things. My problem ended up being Beaches and Cream where my weird boy (who likes ice cream, chocolate, and candy in his normal life) decided he wanted ice cubes for lunch while the rest of us tackled the Kitchen Sink. We tried and tried and tried to tempt him with chocolate bars, brownies, candy, etc etc. I was in total shock. And we ended up leaving about 1/3 of it behind while he sucked on his ice cubes.

Guess that's why he's so skinny! He's always been fine skipping meals though...even when he was a toddler.
