We ate at Biergarten during our December trip. My mistake, but the child's portion of the buffet had nothing our DS (age 5) would eat. He doesn't eat mac-n-cheese or hot dogs. So while he was downing another pretzel bread I got up and asked our server if the kitchen could possibly make a grilled cheese or something. A short time later the chef caught up with me on my way to the buffet. He explained that they didn't really have any bread onsite there at BG to make a grilled cheese. He asked what DS liked. I said waffles, chicken tenders, pizza, pb & j and a couple other things. He shook his head after each food item I said. I then said that's okay it was my fault for not checking the child buffet menu out better and that we'd get him some nuggets and fries down at AA after we were done. He said "Sir, you will not. You are paying for his meal here we will go get him some nuggets and fries." He then asked to give him some time, feed DS some pretzel bread and the show would be coming again soon to keep him occupied. It took a little bit but the chef came out with a huge plate with 4 large tenders and about 6-7 regular nuggets around the outside of a large bowl in the center filled with fries covering one of those glowing cubes. Awesome! The chef then told my wife and I do not be afraid to eat at any Disney restaurant because a child might not like anything there. He said call them ahead and they can make arrangements without any problems.

Now for my question. DS has begged and begged to go back there. Not sure if he even remembers the ordeal with his food but sure does remember the show. So we went ahead and made ADR's for our first full day at WDW coming up April 30. Do I call WDW-DINE to relay the information to Biergarten about a sustitute meal for DS or is there a number to call BG directly? And can I trust WDW-DINE to relay the message? Or should I just try to stop at BG in person the evening of April 29 after we check-in. (We have AP, so admission isn't a problem). Thanks in advance.

That is a great story. That's the kind of service that keeps people coming back to WDW. I wish I had the Biergarten phone number for you, but I don't.

I think roast chicken is on the buffet menu . . . perhaps your DS will go for that?

Have a great trip! I'm sure it will work out!

Does he eat sausage by chance now? Maybe you could try at home before you go and see how that goes. Then you wouldn't have to worry about something special.

Glad you had such a good experience there. We absolutely love going.

Call back dining and ask for the Biergarten phone number & they will give it to you. I would call the resturanty maybe a few days before you go to make sure they got it on file. I have to do this as I have many allegries to certain things & dining always gives me the resturant phone number :) Disney will go out of their way to make you a meal that you can eat. Last Sept we ate at Le Celliers & I wanted the shrimp apptizers but it had garlic on them a sauce perhaps but the chef thaw some out & brought them to me.:goodvibes

That is an awesome story!

I wouldn't rely on Dining to relay the message. I would talk to Biergarten specifically - stopping by earlier in the day is a good idea.

That's a lovely story- thanks for sharing. I have 2 picky eaters and I completely empathize.

Dining can not give you the number to call Biergarten unfortunately. If you have a noted allergy on your ADR they will give you a number to talk to a chef at that location. You can call dining and they can add a note to your ADR but if the restaurant doesn't look at it too soon before you come, they won't know. I would advise either stopping by Biergarten if you can or talk to your resort guest services if you are staying onsite. HTH! :)

Just updating an old thread I started. I ended up stopping by Biergarten the day before and explained the situation to the CM at the podium. She wrote down the details and said it would be taken care of. The next day another large-ish plate of nuggets and fries were delivered (by our server) and this time a glowing Captain Hook was buried.

thank you so much for this information and your great experience....it is wonderful to know that even if a family goes to a restaurant with not so kid friendly meals....we can rest assure that the kiddos will be able to eat somethng......

Thanks again

Hi this is very re assuring for me to! We really like the sound of the menu at B, but DD doesn't eat pasta or hot dogs either! I think I will make sure to mention it when I do my ADR's, and then stop by a day or two before. Chicken nuggets and fries would do my DD fine!

Claire :)

For those checking this post and its update, WDW-DINE will probably not be able to assist you in getting a special meal for your child because they don't like what's ordinarily served. those who are thinking of doing the same thing would be best off stopping off before you eat there, asking to speak to a manager or chef, and asking if you can get chicken nuggets provided for your child. I also don't know if EVERY WDW restaurant will be as accommodating, but all you can do is ask.

And this is one person's opinion, so take it for what it is worth.....

The original story was heartwarming because it happened on the fly and a problem was solved on the spot. But I don't think people should make a habit of making ADRs at restaurants that do not serve the type of food that one likes, and then try to move heaven and earth to get the kitchen to come up with something in your wheelhouse. Allergies are one thing, but preferences are something else entirely. WDW has so many places to choose from. If you want pizza, go to Via Napoli. Don't go to Teppan Edo and try to get them to cobble something together. Just because Disney can do something doesn't mean they should have to.

I agree with you and I HAVE a picky eater.I make her try new things.Sometimes Disney has offered up alternative items, but I would NOT expect them to all the time.I either plan ahead and pick places that she will eat something or I expect that she will try new things, and get her another snack later on .

Boy times have changed, when I was a kid if I did not like what was on my plate, I went hungry. I cannot even imagine catering to a picky child as that is just reinforcing the behaviour. Nothing on the menu that he will even try, oh well, he can watch the rest of us eat our meal. Finicky children are breed not born!

Yes they certainly have..back when Epcot first opened, WS didn't really even HAVE a childrens menu at their restaurants. You ate what there was or you didn't eat.My parents would never have put up with picky eating from a healthy child ( not talking about developmental/health issues).I remember eating at Biergarten as a kid and my parents telling me to "suck it up and eat or go hungry" ..Now I have a picky eater, but I MAKE her try new things and experiences even on vacation.

Bingo! A disheartening reflection of today's society.

OP here. Trust me. It is not a joy dealing with our picky DS. *The last thing that I want to do on vacation is to take extra time to figure out when and where we can get something for him to eat. *Our DD is getting the same chance to go on a WDW trip the off season before she starts kindergarten just like her brother did. *I am so looking forward to not having to worry what she'll eat, will she like it or will she whine about it. *She is opposite of our DS. *Go figure. *She grew up in the same household with the same parents, the same meal habits, the same preschool 2 days a week and the same grandparents helping out. *She tries everything and continues to eat most. *She is a joy at mealtime. *At a restaurant usually she orders what her big brother does but when we are out without him she orders with a lot more variety. *In fact our DS seems to have regressed. *We had an episode at the cafe at the Museum of American History in Washington DC where he refused to eat the pb & j. *I told him we were not leaving the cafe and go to our scheduled White House tour until he finished the sandwich. *He ended up finally eating it after 45 minutes of whining about it and even crying. *If you were in DC President's Day weekend that was us running down the sidewalk to (almost) get to our tour on time. *Luckily he does not drink soda or fruit punch-type drinks. *He only drinks milk (white), apple juice (100%), water or V-8. *Other than seek professional help (doubt insurance would cover) all we can do is keep trying. *

BTW, the next time you're at 'Ohana, take a look around at all the kids eating meals from Captain Cook's. *
