sorry if i seem thick but i havent got a clue what it is-i have never heard about it until on here......i dont think we have it in the UK :confused3 :confused3

Black Friday. Stores open very early with lots of special sales. They want to do well during the holiday season so they are operating in the black (positive cash flow....)

Do you have Boxing Day (Dec. 26) in the UK? We have it here in Canada and it would be similar to BF. Big sales - lots of deals. Unfortunately ours is after Christmas - would be nice to get some of these deals before Christmas.

The Thanksgiving Holiday is always the fourth Thursday of November and many companies close their offices for the next day as lots of people travel to be with relatives on Thanksgiving.

For many people and stores the Christmas Shopping Season "officially" is considered to start on Thanksgiving Day.

Combining that many people have off from their regular jobs, and the "shopping season" has just started, many large stores have very deeply discounted, loss-leader type merchandise on sale that day (usually only for a few hours in the morning) to attract people to the store and get them in a buying mood.

The way most people act, if it were in the UK the local Constabulary would start reading the Riot Act. It is definitely not for either the faint of heart or frail of body

*evil cackle*
I'm a Black Friday Amazon. My hubby went w. me ONCE to the malls. He's vowed never to do so again. It's not just the crowds (which, incidentally can be verrrry scary, unless you have a good strategy like I do...) but apparently when I'm "hunting" in the stores I'm pretty scary!
I always save one or two things for BF shopping. This year it's stocking stuffers mostly... plus one or two small things for family. And for myself...I love getting a few luxury items for cheap!

The traditional name of black friday has to do with when most retail stores actually make a profit for the year. Most make all of their real profit between Thanksgiving and Christmas and technically operate at a loss until then. The day after Thanksgiving is one of the biggest shopping days in the US and was previously the biggest day but now the Saturday before Christmas often surpasses it in sales.

I do not want to over play it but..Black Friday is just about the best shopping day of the year next to the day after Christmas and Washington's Birthday. One needs to have a strong constitution AND have a couple of mules with her (ie my husband and son) so they can mind the loot while the "shopper" me weaves into the crowds!
