Beyond Recovery: Christin's journal of progress (comments welcome)

Hey we need more people like you who appreciate the owners opening early. DH does that all the time and then will let people in after he closes. Of course it is usually when I am waiting for him to get home. Most don't appreciate it though.

I think you are doing great! You have accomplished alot of writing and your food isn't really that bad.

If your MIL makes a comment about you losing weight, just say "Isn't it great! I feel really good, now where is so and so".

Have fun on your trip and at your conference. At least you are schmoozing for eventual pay, try schmoozing in volunteer situations, double UGH (my friends don't know how I still do it after all these years). Don't know if there is a Lush in Chicago, but enjoy picking up some great smelling spa supplies. ;)

Have a great day! ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

I'm glad you are focusing on the long term and "seeing" your progress. You will need that new swimsuit in May!!!!
Hope things go well with MIL. Just keep your cool and go to Curves to work off the rest of your emotions.
Have fun at the conference. You do get around girl!

I totally agree with you that it feels great to support local, independent businesses--they're few and far between these days!

Have a great time on your travels! I'm sure you'll be able to handle your MIL and the food situation--if anything else, it's only a few days out of your life. Sounds like your DH is really supportive, which makes a world of difference.

Bon Voyage!!!

Thanks all for the encouragement- my MIL is really a wonderful woman, I think she just doesn't realize how hurtful some of her well-meaning comments can be.

Yikes! One more day, and I still have to organize my paperwork for the discussion panel (I'm leading the discussion...what was I thinking!) and my presentation panel (mostly done, but still need to formalize the last 3 minutes). Plus, there's packing, which always takes more time than I think, and going to the store to find good snacks for the plane. I can never find anything worth eating in an airport!

Thursday-
B- leftover flatbread and dip (DH ate my cherrios and didn't even tell me! Good thing I like him so much or there'd be heck to pay! ;)
L- campbell's chicken corn chowder and 2 tortilla rounds
S- sugar free fudgicle w/ PB
S- string cheese stick
D- hamburger no bun, small portion of green beans, 5 perogies w/ grilled onions (I tried to stop with 4, but they were so good! bad carb, bad carbs!) and a small salad.

(I'm trying to do my snacking during the day as much as possible so I don't have anything after dinner. I think I'm going to set this as a mini-challenge for myself and see if I notice any difference)

Swam laps 40 minutes (actually went after dinner because I couldn't get to it before. I thought the food would weigh me down, but I was OK and had loads of energy. Took me forever to get to sleep, however.)

Speaking of swimming, my hair-dresser yesterday let me know how dry my hair was from swimming. I need to get some hot-oil treatment today.

OK- my eating goals for the trip:

Travel days: find time to buy healthy snacks to take on the plane- apples, grapes, string cheese, nuts, raisins, etc. If I have to eat in the airport, find a simple sandwich with meat for protein and remove at least 1/2 of the bread

The Inlaws:
- expect "the conversation," thank them for noticing my weight loss and say I did it for health reasons.
- avoid most of the food DH's mom makes for him because she's so happy to see him. That includes cookie trays, candy baskets, and bags of chips. If I do decide to eat something, make it small and make sure it's something that I really, really want.
- leave 1/2 of the dessert at DH's grandmothers b-day party. Also pick the healthiest plate option, probably fish, instead of something like prime rib.
- if SIL takes us out, have only 1 glass of wine and drink water the rest of the time.
- hit Curves at least twice.

The Conference-
- eat breakfast every morning...I'm going to need it to survive the sun up to sun down schedule and still sound like a smart person. ;). Try to find at least fruit and avoid sugary baked goods. Even a bagel is better than a muffin. Pack some bars w/ protein for mid-morning in case I only find fruit.
- try to eat as many salads as possible. I'll be having lots of lunches and dinners with groups of people at restaurants. I generally find in these situations that I'm more interested in the conversation than the food, so there is no need to splurge.
- make sure every meal has at least some protein to keep me going.
- only 1 iced latte a day...at $4 a pop, I'll be out of $$$ in no time if I do more.

Wow- just writing all of that out makes me feel better, like I have more control. I'm sure I'll encounter some surprises along the way, but at least I have a plan. :)

Going in with a plan can make the world of difference in this game we play. ;) At least with a plan, even if there is a small slip, it goes barely unnoticed and you will feel much stronger for sticking to the plan and still have a very enjoyable time.

Pearlieq is right, it is just a few days and you will be fine.

Have a great time! ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

Just thought I would let you know. DD18's roomie is a theater major. :rotfl2: How ironic. We were just talking about archeaology and the theater the other day. I have a feeling that there will be a lot of drama going on in that room. DD18 loves the theater (she used to dance). In another life she was probably on stage.

Have a great weekend! ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

OMG, Lesli. Too funny! Yes, I bet there will be drama to spare coming out of that room. That's probably the same reaction my freshman roommate had once she found out I'd be spending all my time at the theatre.

OK- just about ready to take off
Yesterday (Friday)
B-South Beach snack bar
L- fahjita chicken salad
S- sugar free fudgicle w/ PB
S- iced coffee (I was good on this one, I wanted popcorn, but went for milk instead)
D- peel and eat shrimp w/ cocktail sauce, french bread dipped in olive oil, and sugar snap peas.
Hooray~ No after dinner snack again!

Curves 40 minutes

HOpefully, I'll be able to post at the in-laws.

Later gators!

Your day looked good yesterday! Great job! :cool1:

I told my DD18 that I can see how their room will be decorated now as she pulls out all of her "Cats" posters to hang on her side of the room. She even has a poster of Rum Tum Tugger signed by Ron DeVito, she met him and at a dance competition that he runs (oh and Mr. Mistofoles). Well DD18 was hoping to catch the school plays and such. Guess she can catch them in her room. :rotfl2:

Have a great trip. I think I have said that already, but I guess you can never say it enough. ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

As Lesli said - going in with a plan is ALWAYS a good thing!!!! That's how I've been able to stay on track, more or less. I'm finding out if I don't have an idea of what I'm going to eat - I do worse in my eating part of the day. If I know what I'm going to eat for the day, I do so much better!!!!

Have a good time and hope you're able to relax and have some fun.

Keep on
Chris

(speaking quietly, covert post...I'm in a house completely taken over by sugar. Please send reinforcements, as I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to hold out. Rations of whole grain also needed. ;) )

Hi all- arrived at the in-laws with no hitch. I spent the day reading the new Harry Potter while traveling, so that was good. (although it's already making me nervous. I've somehow let these characters become very important to me, like I know them! Amazing the power of good fiction, aimed at whatever age group)

Saturday (or as it will now forever be known, the day of white bread and more white bread ;) )
B- South Beach bar at 6:00 am
2nd B (10:00)- a Chicago hot dog at Midway airport. (when in Rome...) Seriously, I needed some protein, and this looked so good. Plus, it reminded me of when we lived in Chicago
S- some trail mix
L (1:30) turkey sandwich on whole grain bread. Hooray! We must have found the only healthy thing in the airport
D at inlaws, stewed sausage and green peppers on a white bread roll and macaroni salad.
S- a mini-sized Nestle Crunch bar from THE CANDY BASKET!!!

OK- I know it's hard to control food on a travel day, but I way exceeded on simple carbs. I did keep portions down, so that was something.

Off to find breakfast in a forest of carbs and sugars... ;)

(BTW- great visit so far. Lots of comments about how "healthy" I look, so really better than I expected or gave credit.)

Glad to hear the visit is going well--white bread land nonwithstanding!

Glad you had a bit the Chicago experience!

Lobbing a few whole grain rolls your way! Keep fighting the good fight!

Secret missions heading your way. The code words are "Avoid the Sugar". If that fails, the code words are "Sugar brings about undesirable results mentally and emotionally." The location of the mission could be found anywhere. We will find you. ;)

Glad to hear that the weight loss conversations have gone well. Great job!

As for the rest, just remember this is only a few days and you can carefully wade your way through this land of danger.

Have a great day! ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

Glad to hear your visit is going better, so far, than expected. Sorry you are in the sea of sugar and carbs - YIKES!!!! And you stopped at Midway on your way through and got to have a Chicago dog - awesome. I like Chicago dogs, just the dog though - none of the other junk :D

Hope your visit keeps going well!!!

Keep on

Sunday- day 2 at the inlaws
B- 2 slices of zucchini bread w/ lite cream cheese
L- left over sausage (passed on the bun) and macaroni salad (I was offered an icecream for dessert and declined)
D- (the party for DH's grandmother who was turning 80) This was the big event and reason why we'd flown up for the visit. None of us had eaten very much and were pretty hungry. The party started w/ drinks (1 overflowing glass of white wine), and then appitizers. Everything was fried! I had 1 fried zucchini (but it was quite large), 1 fried cheese stick, 1/2 a fried wonton, and 1 bite of an eggroll...not bad, could have been worse. Dinner salad w/ an italian vinegrette was great...plus 1 whole wheat roll and butter. In all honesty, I think I was full at this point. The main course was a stuffed porkchop w/ gravy, mashed potatoes, and brussel sprouts. I ate about 1/2 of everything, leaving most of the stuffing behind. Dessert was birthday cake, and I only ate 1/2 of the piece they gave me. I also passed on the homemade candy and pastries that were passed around after. (I wasn't exagerating before...I'm literally surrounded by simple carbs and sugars!!!)

But even after sticking to my plan and limiting what I ate based on what was available, I still majorly over-ate and felt incredibly stuffed. I just can't stand feeling overly full anymore.

Anyway, today my DH is going to take me to Curves, so that should help some. Then we are going shopping. Hopefully while we are out, I'll manage to find an iced coffee (majorly missing my morning ritual here) and a green leafy vegetable (I haven't seen one in days!).

You did a great job! Congrats to you!

Enjoy your trip to Curves and I hope you find your coffee fix!

Hey you did good by only eating half of your food and picking small amounts of the other items and then passing up the sweets!!!! You did very good and glad you are getting some time in at Curves and away from the clan - I can hear ya about wanting some of the foods you are use to eating if you don't have them available.

Hope your day today was good!

Keep on
Chris

Good job on the party food. I think you did quite well navigating your way around. Not wanting to feel overly full is a good sign of progress. Keep up the great work and the Overloaded Sugar Mission will be over soon.

Have a great day tomorrow. ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

Thanks for the support! I weighed in when I went to the Curves yesterday, and am still at 203, although who knows if that scale and the one at my Curves are calibrated the same. My goal is to just make it through this trip breaking even.

Monday-
B- zucchini bread w/ lite cream cheese and grapes (a fruit!)
L- homemade pizza (DH's family is part Italian)
S- serving of leftover macaroni salad, and 1 mini nestle cruch bar from THE BASKET!
D- turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, and mixed veggies. (too many carbs, but not too bad considering)
S- Here's where it got dicey...we walked over to DH's grandmother after dinner and while we talked, she proceed to bring out an assortment of gummy bears, homemade coconut bonbons, brownies, and chocolate covered marshmellows! Surrounded, I tell you, completely surrounded!!! I had a handful of gummybears, 1 1/2 coconuts, and 1/2 a marshmellow (I tried to take something and get my DH to eat half)

Anyway, not too bad considering the circumstances, but I know I'm going to have to get my sugar tooth back in control after this.

The Curves here was really nice, and I'm going back today to get in another 40 minutes.

The menu today, so I've heard, is stuffed peppers for dinner, so that sounds pretty good, actually. But, I just noticed when I woke up today that there were 4 pieces of homemade fudge sitting on the counter. My MIL asked me yesterday if she should thaw some of the fudge, and I said no thanks, I didn't need the temptation. But, there it is today. Would you guys call that sabatoge? Just wondering...

OK- I'm off to San Francisco tomorrow and won't have internet access, so I'll try to post again tonight and catch up on some other journals before I take off.
