The FAA is reporting a nationwide disruption to flights today because of a system outage.
New York (CNN) — A Federal Aviation Administration system that provides pilots with notices they need to read before flying is experiencing an outage, affecting flights in the United States.
It's unclear how many flights will be affected, because some airlines may be able to operate without information from the system, known as the NOTAMS system.
An FAA advisory states: "Technicians are currently working to restore the system and there is no estimate for restoration of the service at this time."

There IS nationwide flight trouble today. Many flights unable to take off until this resolves, United for one grounded all non-departed flights. If you’re flying stay on top of your flight info.

FAA says they’re in the process of restoring the system so hopefully it’s not much longer.

“Update 3: The FAA is still working to fully restore the Notice to Air Missions system following an outage.

The FAA has ordered airlines to pause all domestic departures until 9 a.m. Eastern Time to allow the agency to validate the integrity of flight and safety information.”

Our news is reporting a full ground stop nationwide
I saw that but just checked the delta status and flights in and out of our small regional airport are running and on time. The last one departed at 7am
not sure how it all works that they can take off but the larger airports can’t
these must be the planes that were here overnight
im sure the next set will be delayed. All planes go out to a hub and then back.

This is a big big deal. Every pilot has to check the NOTAMS for his/her area before every flight. Even FAA licensed drone pilots have to check for relevant NOTAMS. It is the only nationwide system to get last minute information about changing conditions, etc., at airports to pilots.

An example would be if an FAA control tower's radios are down the FAA issues a NOTAM; in the absence of the NOTAM your only clue would be radio silence.

Maybe they took off before the FAA ordered all flights grounded. I doubt they could defy the FAA & take off right now.

I saw people on Twitter saying if they filed before the system went down they could have received the necessary info and been cleared to go.

But with the FAA telling everyone to stop I think that was the end of that.

Flight aware is showing Southwest being disproportionately affected with 57% of todays flights delayed vs other airlines running around 10%.

Good news!

“Update 4: The FAA is making progress in restoring its Notice to Air Missions system following an overnight outage. Departures are resuming at @EWRairport and @ATLairport due to air traffic congestion in those areas. We expect departures to resume at other airports at 9 a.m. ET.”

Southwest now showing only 48% of their flights delayed so if you saw a delay, double check, might be on time now!

Yup - great infrastructure we've got

I know its sarcastic but honestly it is.

Think about the number flights daily and how little flights are impacted. Yes this is a big deal today but likely will no longer be a deal at all tomorrow or the day after hopefully.

Amsterdam this summer was like a 4 hour wait or something over the summer certain days just to get through security and the baggage was so bad you had bags going to Spain and people going to Italy.

It hasn’t been fun today but things are smooth enough for us. A little late leaving LAS this morning and now a 3 hour delay in DTW. I expected as we moved east to have more delays. Good luck to anyone else out in this today!
