Beware the Biting Flies at OKW

Can't say for sure it was at OKW, but on our May trip Mrs U got similar bites for two-three day straight. I got nothing. We were together for the entire trip, so it wasn't as tho she went somewhere that I didn't.

It must have something to do with "scent" --or blood type--or something else.
Fortunately I had my prednisone tabs with me (I'm very allergic to insect bites of any sort) and several 10mg prednisones helped her considerably.

Even then the bites didn't really disappear until we got home.

Oh no, we are heading down in two weeks with a large family group including 4 month old grandbaby. Any suggestions for keeping the little one bug bite free?

about the only sure way is to have her wear clothing that would keep her covered. Even in warm weather I find I do better, no bites, or sunburn or rashes if I wear very light colored, light weight loose fitting pants.

I was the only one in our group that did not get bit by the flies and everyone else had on shorts.

Hopefully they will be gone by the time you arrive.

You might be able to get a mosquito netting cover for her stroller at a Babies R Us (or similar store), or camping store. There are bands (kind of like bracelets) that are anti-mosquito that might be safe for her (not sure if they work on the biting flies, tho). Take along some good baby-safe anti-itch cream and spray (benadryl-type). As PP said -- long loose clothing. Avoid perfumed lotions.

At the beginning of May after sitting by the OKW pool watching DS swim I ended up with an awful bite on the back of my leg. Didn't feel the getting bit part but man, oh man did that thing itch. Thank goodness for the hydrocortisone they gave me at Epcot's First Aid the next day...

I got my bites nearly two weeks ago and the itching is just starting to go away.

We had bites too, but i don't recall seeing the biting flies. My wife required a doctor visit and antibiotics.

Has anyone had any luck with bug spray that keeps the biters away? I'm sure the light, loose, long clothing would do the job - but I'm all packed and that's not what I'm bringing (don't really own that type clothing - shorts are my hot weather clothes - and I can't go out and buy all new for this trip). I do have Off! packed - handy that it comes in small spray tubes now - but does anyone have any other helpful suggestions?
My daughter is a mosquito magnet - hoping to keep her as bite free as possible.
Thanks!

Is this type of bite the kind that would require use of Epi pen? DS is allergic to bees and of that type and also swells very bad with mosquitos. We use benadryl to treat the later and epi for bees.

I am glad to say we have been ok so far in all our trips other than DH getting bit at the grill station in VB.

Just picked up Cutter advanced wipes, Benadryl spray and camphophenique. The cutter says it repels mosquitoes, chiggers, biting flies, no-see-ums, gnats and fleas. Hopefully it helps, also put in pool side request at BCV.

We just returned from 12 nights at OKW. We checked out the 10th. We didn't see any critters or experienced any bites of any kind. My DW and I marveled at how peaceful and pest free our stay at OKW had been. Perhaps the neighborhood? We stayed in building 14. :confused3

I was planning on staying at the THV's next June but now I'm worried. I wonder if we should do July?

I spent last week 6/6 to 6/10 at OKW, and had no insect problems, and I also spent quite a bit of time on the balcony, #43. I did however get multiple bites around my calves & hankles heading out on the boat from OKW to DTD around 10:30pm! I never saw mosquitos but what bit me was shorter than a typical mosquito & had spotted, wider wings. I got like 3 or 4 bites on the way but none on the way back!

No, you can easily see them. They are like small bees or spotted flies.

We stayed at BCV Memorial Day week 2010 and I was bitten by these nasty yellow flies and they hurt like heck!! Reminded me of the horse flies here on Long Island..thanks for the heads up as we are headed to OKW next week.

Does anyone know if the Off! fan will repel the little buggers? I'm the only one in the family to a) attract a lot of bugs b) have an allergic reaction to them and c) scar from the bites.

We are headed down on Tuesday to OKW for a few days and I would like to remain bite free. May pick up some cutter before then too just to be safe.

I read a review of those Off! fans in Consumer Reports and it wasn't a positive report. Just get some good spray and use that. I wish I had. I still have scabs on my legs and arms.
