Beware Bingo! We just got off the 3 night March 19-22, 2009 sailing, and whoa! Bingo is high tech now and very expensive -- very changed since the last time we sailed on the Wonder just in February 2008.

They now have an electronic bingo machine which does everything for you for $60. It gives you the benefit of having 24 cards (equal to 4 punch-and-fold six-packs). You just watch the machine work the bingo cards, and it tells you if you have won. All you have to do is say "Bingo!" when it tells you to say Bingo. you don't touch the machines at all. They still have the punch-and-fold cards, but it is $40, and only gives you 6 chances per game (versus the electronic game which gives you 24 games). The odds are with the electronic bingo. you can get 2 six-packs for $60 -- matching the cost of the electronic machine -- but that only gives you 12 chances total, just half of the chances with an electronic machine for the same money.

As a result of all of this electronic manipulation, there are more cards in play than there would be normally (since one person could not play 4 physical cards at once, which is what the electronic game gives them the ability to do). So what is the effect? The effect is that the games go FASTER. For example, in the game of 4 corners, someone always yelled Bingo after only 4 or 5 numbers were called. It went too fast! In the old days before the electronics, it took more numbers to find a winner.

Secondly, there is no chance for error since the electronic bingo cards are always right. In the past, you might hope that someone called Bingo by mistake, but not now. No mistakes, no hope that you might still be in play.

Third, there are more multiple winners per game (because there are more cards in play than usual). So, for example, you paid $60 to play, the game is over in 5 bingo calls (about 2 minutes), there are 2 bingo winners, and they split the cash prize of $87. You spend a ton of money for a short time per game, and the winning amounts are so small, even if you have the thrill of winning, in many cases, you don't break even.

Fourth, there are only 4 games, and they don't change. The first game is a straight line, the 2nd game is four corners, the third game is a Baby X, and the last game is a large X. The full blackout is only played in the last 2 Bingo sessions on the last day. Not only do these game go too fast and are too short, at least you would think they would shake it up a little and do different patterns from game to game.

Fifth, when we first sailed, in October 2006, they had lots of cute sayings when they called the Bingo numbers. Like, 50, was "5-0, 5-0 it's off to work we go" instead of "Heigh-ho, heigh-ho." Very cute! They also gave out nice prizes randomly to the audience, like travel mugs and clocks. Now, they give out trading pins, and who they give it out to is electronically generated on the computer screen. Bah Humbug!

Leslie has been head of Bingo for 3 years now at least -- I wonder why the program has changed so much? Where are her cute Bingo expressions? Why is it so automated and expensive now?!!!

The cruise is raking in money on Bingo, and I think the fun has gone out of it. It is now more like gambling rather than a fun family activity. Although I love Bingo, next time, I'm going to skip it. It was a huge, disappointing waste, and everyone left feeling like they'd been played. Disney needs to go back to its family-friendly roots in this activity.:rotfl2:

Well, that litle machine was $90 on my 4 day on the last day. The payouts were good. I was shocked at the price and how Bingo was played.

Our prizes started at $500 something and increased up to $3000.00++. Yes, 1 lucky person won all that money. There was a jackpot of $5000.00, but nobody won.

ETA: Regarding your gambling thought. You know I spent more money in Bingo ($90.00) than I would have if the ship had a casino, in fact, I probably wouldn't have used the casino at all. So, isn't Bingo gambling?

Wow, this is sad. I was looking forward to trying bingo on my first 7 day cruise next year since we have more "sea days" than just the one that I'm used to on the 4 night cruises, but this doesn't sound fun at all. Sounds like the technology takes all the thinking and fun out of the game. I don't think i'll be wasting any time on board to do this now.

in Dec we did not have to buy the device--do you have to now or can you still get cards? that price is too steep for me for 4 games!!

Huh. I think you can always buy paper cards.

I know DAD AT DISNEY has always thought on board bingo was/is a good deal!!

;)

I can't imagine those that play all 3 days to get the little discount they give you. I only played the last day and it was around $70 plus dollars for electronic bingo. One guy won the jackpot of $3300 with his two sons!

There is two types of bingo when I was doing family crafts with a friend from ocean quest the CM hosting crafts said that a little later family bingo was going to happen in the lounge later family bingo is free I went to it you get handed a two sided card not electronic but it was just a plain one I did not win but prizes when I did it was Limted edition Bolt lanyards not in stores yet at that time disney cruise like mugs, High school musical stuff like hat or a pompom, disney cruise pens and watches it went fast since if you won you got a lot of stuff and the other type was the one where you pay.

Tinkmom2 that would be us who won the $3300.

We were on the 4 night march 22nd cruise and won the jackpot bingo.

We also had a great time doing FE with you on that cruise.

I agree that the mechanical gizmo takes some of the fun out of it.

You can do the cards instead of the machine but for the money you don't get nearly as many chances to win.

Can't say that I can complain too much though consdering we did come out well ahead financially.

It has been this way for a while and most people post that they enjoy it. I don't play bingo anywhere personally but DCL must be getting enough of a response to continue it this way. The theater is always packed for that last game that is before the's kid's club final program.

I just got off the Magic on Saturday and I did play bingo quite a bit, it is expensive but the cheapest payout won was $120.00. The jackpot on the last day was $8100.00 and it did go to one person.

My DH played every bingo on the last cruise. Yes, every bingo. :scared1:
Anyway, they still did the cute sayings at our bingo in January. We had Claire and Natalie as our bingo staff. And they did that B11 dance, which is now stuck in my head. :lmao:

The payouts on our cruise were quite high. DH split a pot and still got $125. :confused3 And the snowball bingo was over $8,000. Unfortunately we didn't win that one. :sad1:

We were on the Magic in Nov and they did the cute sayings then too. I play bingo at home and everytime they call B11 that song goes through my head!!!

"There was a jackpot of $5000.00, but nobody won".

OK, I'm confused. How does the game end without a winner? Was the 5k jackpot on a clock with just so many minutes to win before the game was over?
:teacher:

No, actually it came before the $3000 jackpot. I don't remember exactly, but the $5000.00 was if you hit a special number or that your board was covered at that call.

BTW, the people that won were the ones holding the electronic board. It was the only game that I went to, so I don't know how well the players do with the paper punch outs.

I don't play BINGO. That said, I saw people in the Promenade lounge with both the paper cards and the machines. Frankly, I don't see how the cards could compete with the machines since the machines never make a mistake, etc.

It seemed to me that they were REALLY pushing the BINGO on our last cruise, but DD didn't think the announcements had increased.

How can it be a "good deal?" DCL gets it's cut from the company that runs the BINGO operation, the company takes it's cut, and the players get what's left if they're lucky.

$60 for a game of Bingo??!?! OMG!! Please tell me that lasts all cruise long?? That's crazy expensive!!

You must not play bingo. :rotfl2:

My MIL plays bingo every day in Florida and easily drops $60-$100 per evening. I wouldn't, but she enjoys it.

And to answer your question, that's per bingo session and not for the entire cruise.

My mom has her heart set on playing Bingo on our cruise, and I keep trying to talk her out of it.

I know that she just wants to do it for the fun of it, but without the Bingo daubers, I am just not sure she will even have that.
