Beverage options on dining plan

Can anyone shed some light on beverage options while on the Disney Dining Plan? Do they need to be the usual soft drinks and hot beverages or can they be the specialty non-alcoholic and/or malts that some of the restaurants have?

at almost all of the Disney-owned restaurants we've visited, we were allowed, or offered, the milkshakes, smoothies or "virgin" drinks for our DDP beverage. Most places we actually turned them down because after the first one or two places we quickly found that adding a milkshake or smoothie left us way too full to enjoy our entree & dessert. But the places that allowed these beverages included Le Cellier, Sci Fi, The Wave, Grand Floridian, Turf Club, Kona Cafe, Coral Reef and more.

The places that said no were contract restaurants like Les Chefs, Tutto Italia and Yak & Yeti...they had milkshakes & smoothies, just would not allow them on the dining plan.

In general, most restaurants will allow you to get any non-alcoholic drink that doesn't come with extras (like a souvenir cup or glow cubes). So soft drinks, juice, iced tea, lemonade, hot tea, coffee, etc. I'd say I've heard of more restaurants allowing milkshakes/smoothies than no, especially the Disney-owned ones (like catne said).

That includes QS, btw, at least at Liberty Inn (frozen Coke). I don't know where else has special beverages.
