Better to vent this to strangers...

Because I just lost 10 points of respect toward our neighbors/friends.

Neighbors got a bunny about 2 years ago. Loved it, doted on it until a year ago they decided to get a puppy.

Suddenly the bunny spent it's days in the cage, in the garage... often though with the garage door open for ventilation. Never talked about the bunny or played with it much as I could see, it was all about the dog.

They just went out of town for a couple days and put the dog in a kennel. No mention of the bunny  (according to FB posts) Yesterday they were back and dh saw them cleaning out the bunny cage.

Today FB post says that the bunny died:sad1: Neighbor said something must have scared it and it had a heart attack. "And at least it didn't suffer"

I'm sick to my stomach. Admittedly I am not a pet person (have no desire to have any pets of my own, do not know of daily care of bunnies) But you know what, that garage door has been shut all summer now that both parents work. And I just can't buy that a 2yr old bunny would just drop dead of a heart attack from being "spooked."

Can't say I am pleased much about the dog either. They havent neutered it, or obedience trained it... so it's pretty much a horny nuciense. Why? Because it costs too much :sad2:

Not all people should have pets. I'm disgusted by my "friends"

If you can't afford it and don't have the time for it, don't get it. This goes for having kids too. Kids and pets are not accessories, but are responsibilities!

I would have reported them to the ASPCA for the cruelty to the bunny!! They murdered it!!

Poor Bunny :/

Some people just don't deserve to own animals at all

My good friend had two indoor cats, but they were too much for her with young kids. Instead of giving them to a shelter, she let them "run" away from her house. A neighbor found one and was feeding her for weeks, she eventually asked my friend if she wanted the cat back, and my friend said the lady could keep her. They saw the other cat on and off for a while, but don't know what happened to it. I found it a sad way to care for cats, but I guess she got overwhelmed.

Bunnies are extremely sensitive and can literally die of fright, so death by heart attack is a very real possibility. I had a bunny die unexpectedly a few years ago, with no known cause or reason. It wasn't even a year old.

However, it seems that being stuck in a hot garage all summer with no venelation...a garage door doesn't count..air still doesn't have anywhere to go or move around! (:scared1::confused3) is what killed it. :sad2:

My bunny lives outside in a hutch in the shade that is open on three sides. It never gets as hot as it would if it was in the sun, and air can circulate. I would love to bring her inside, but she is not potty trained. In the winter when it gets very, very cold out we will put her in a cage in the garage.

And gee whiz...train your stupid dog!! I guess they don't have  to neuter it, but it should have at least basic training...especially if it lives in a neighborhood with lots of kids and families and such. If they decide to not neuter it, they need to be aware of the "side effects" that may occur with their decision.

Are you kidding? Indoor cats are some of the easiest pets ever. Feed them once a day (30 secs), give them fresh water (30 secs) and clean their box once a day or even every couple days (5 mins).

That's too much for her?? :rotfl:

My neighbor has 4 dogs. yes 4. That we never see unless they escape. because they are out of control they are kept inside. Same family got 5 yes 5 feral kittens last year took them home. Never spayed or neutered them. guess how many cats are left.
ONE just one survived the year.

But, happy days this family just adopted another kitten last week. From MSPCA no less. You have no idea how Much i would like to call and tell them no more pets for this family please!:scared1:

One of our neighbors had 2 kittens and kept them outdoors despite the fact that coyotes have been spotted numerous times in the area and the police have emailed out warnings to residents to keep small animals indoors. The kittens disappeared after a few weeks. I can't bring myself to ask what happened to them.

I also agree that rabbits can (and have) died of fright/heart attack.

Maybe the bunny was being taken of someone else, staying at someone's else's house, or so on. Who knows. But you can definately not leave a bunny alone for a few days by itself, even if the temperature's were perfect. Rabbits will not save extra food in their dishes for later... most will hog everything down, some will even refuse to eat food after it's been out for a day or so. They have very sensitive GI Tracts. So that may have been very well also contributed to death.

You'll probably never know what actually happened to the poor rabbit, but it definately sounds as if your neighbors are sucky pet owners. Not nuetering/spaying and not training dogs are 2 of my top dog peeves.

Some states don't have the ASPCA or organizations that will punish pet owners for cruelty to animals, well unless it's somethign like illegal dog fighting, and even then the state only steps in due to the illegal money that is made...not a care, really, about the animals involved....

I live in Georgia, where dogs are free to ride around in the beds of open pickup trucks. It always scares me when I see a dog at a stoplight jump up on the toolbox in the truck bed or on one of the hubs as though they are about to jump out....then the light turns green and the owner drives away as the dog falls off the toolbox into the bed of the truck (whew!) or gets slammed against the side of the truck.

No cop pulls 'em over.

I really wish there was a law.

However, i do have to applaud the hunters who keep special dog crates welded to the beds of their trucks...at least the dog is safely contained.

You must not have met our extremely needy cat....

That's really sad about the rabbit. :(

Unfortunately, there are a lot of irresponsible pet owners. I knew several people who would just let their cats breed and breed and then just roam the neighborhood. One family I knew would drop each new litter of kittens off in another neighborhood and leave :sad2:. Too lazy to even bring the poor things to the pound, or try to give them away, or put an ad in the paper. I even told them about a low cost spay clinic, but I guess they didn't want to take the time, or spend the money on that. It's sad.

I worked with someone once who didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with the fact her mom wouldn't get their dogs fixed because "it would make them get fat". WTH is wrong with people???

This is a very sad subject, and I totally agree with most of what you said. I do have to point out, however, that this would make an excellent tag:

it's pretty much a horny nuciense.

Bunnies should always be kept indoors and are very easy to potty train. In fact, they are very neat and clean animals and prefer to use a litter box. Send me a PM if you want tips on litter training your bunny. I have 4 indoor bunnies and they're all litter box trained. I haven't cleaned up a bunny accident in years!:)

I despise animal maltreatment. But my neighbors probably think I am awful to my dog. It's been well over 100 here about 108 with the heat index.

My dog sits on my balcony longingly looking through the glass as if to say "Please let me in from this inferno". But he is sitting right in front of his dog door. He can come in and out at will!!! I think he just wants me to look bad.

It's a condo so there are probably 20 units looking at him "pining" to get inside. Little con artist!!!

I have a cavalier king charles spaniel too, and he has perfected the sad look as well! He always gazes up at us when we are on the couch and wants to be picked up......will stare at us the whole time sadly....but I've seen him jump on or off the couch a million times whenever he wants! LOL! He just wants us to feel bad for him!
