Southern California Best western plus island palms SD

My bf lives in la Mesa and we are going to visit her this summer. She wants us to stay near the water/beach not near la Mesa as there are not many options.

We are looking for a central location to the beaches. We like a hotel w a nice pool on or very close to the water.

We are hilton points people but can't seem to find anything we like under 200. (8/3-8/8).

Any thoughts on the best western plus island..... Or do you. Have a suggestion for another hotel.

At the end of that stay we will head north to disneyland. We have not been there since 2006! Can't wait to see carsland.

I'll preface this by saying that I haven't gone to SD to go to the beach in at least 15 years. I never really consider staying on Shelter Island (which is not actually an island) because there's not a lot to do there, and I think I'll get tired of having to travel really far to do anything (usually Comic Con, but I have family in SD I visit sometimes). You may want to double check on this, but I don't think there's really a beach in the Shelter Island area, just a marina. You'd be near the water, but I don't know how accessible it would be. Will you have a car, how often will you be driving to La Mesa? What's more important, price or location? Because if you go farther north you can probably get closer to a beach, but you'd be pretty far from La Mesa.
