5. Memphis Tennse.
4. Minneapolis/St. Paul Minn

I truthfully never thought of Utah and Minnesota as vacation destinations, except for maybe skiing.

#5 Memphis was also voted #1 scariest places to live last week. :rotfl2: No wonder it's so affordable to visit.

MN definitely isn't a place I would normally think of for vacation other than fishing, but UT absolutely with all the national parks :)

We absolutely love San Antonio, so much to do in the area and very affordable.

Please add Albuquerque, NM to that list. Inexpensive and beautiful.

Out of that list I think Savannah and maybe Salt Lake City would be the only one I would consider for a Vacation. No offense to the other cities but Ive been to most of those for work and while they were nice and all I would never consider them vacation spots for my tastes. Im sure there are some that they would surely appeal too however.

We spent a week at Tybee Island, GA last year. It is about 30 minutes from Savannah. It was absolutely wonderful & one of the best vacations we ever had!!! It was great because we had the perfect mix of beach vacation and historic Savannah. I would highly recommend it for anyone thinking of visiting that area. I don't think we would have enjoyed it nearly as much if we had just stayed in Savannah. Don't get me wrong - Savannah was wonderful. But having stayed at the beach and then just heading into Savannah for a couple day/evening activities was the far better way to go for us. If you have any questions, certainly feel free to ask.

I LOVE San Antonio! I've been there numerous times on business and it is on my list to take the boys to in a few years. Memphis & Nashville are the only other places that I have a really strong desire to go to on vacation. many of the others I have been to & don't think of as a great vacation.

Woah! Kansas City is #1:thumbsup2

I love living in KC, and this is a great place to visit. :)

I'm 35 minutes N of downtown SLC and I live in a beautiful state :flower3:

MN definitely isn't a place I would normally think of for vacation other than fishing, but UT absolutely with all the national parks :)

Indeed ~ Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce, Zion - very close to the N rim of the Grand Canyon.

From SLC it's an easy drive to Yellowstone.

I've only visited San Antonio of the other cities mentioned.

I agree about San Antonio.

Having grown up in RI, the parts of Providence I would want to visit aren't cheap LOL. The restaurants and hotels in downtown are anything but cheap. Though I suppose considering the small state you can get to a lot of things cheap, free and even go an hour or so and be near the shore if you travel with a vehicle.

Isn't Tybee pretty expensive though?

We didn't think it was expensive at all. We had a 3 BR condo right on the beach for $1700/week in June. There were plenty of places that were less expensive

Savannah is wonderful , as well as Tybee!! Love it there. It is amazing how much there is to do in Savannah and I'm a huge fan of the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" so that was great seeing places that were in the book and meeting a few of the people.
It is a great walking city also and my husband loved that on River Street you could walk outside with an adult beverage. In fact when you would leave a place they would ask " would you like a traveler?" and put your drink in a "to Go" cup.
The restaurants are wonderful down there and the people are the friendliest!!
It has to be one of the MOSt beautiful cities I have ever been to.
Tybee is wonderful too!!
Loved eating at the Breakfast club!!!

I love reading all of the responses. Just this last year my eyes opened up in terms of the word "vacation". I'd always considered it to be somewhere we fly to honestly. But now that my kids are older and more into history and museums and can make long drives easily, I've realized between my country and yours I could easily never leave the continent and have something new to see every year that we would love!!

It's not on the list but I love Indy and think it would be a great and affordable place to vacation. Our Children's Museum is regularly mentioned by various publications as the best in the World, and Connor Prairie is great for kids too. Our downtown is quite lovely as well, White River State Park hosts 2 lovely museums and the best minor league ballpark in the country, as well as a nice zoo and botanical gardens. (I'll be honest, I've seen better zoos/botanical gardens, but they are a nice way to spend a day.)

Speaking of what pigletto said, we had a great weekend getaway last year in Cleveland of all places! Would never have thought!

Spent a couple days at Providence while at a conference. Looked for entertaining things to do. Not impressed. To vacation to it?? Um, no.

Thanks for all the kind words about Savannah! I am a lifelong resident, so to me it's not vacation, but it's nice to hear that others love my hometown! We live about 10 minutes from the historic district in one direction and 15 minutes to Tybee in the other, so we get the best of both worlds :)

Don't come skiing in Minnesota, its pretty flat.

But it is a nice place to visit. Good museums, a very active arts scene - lots of local theatres. Pretty much every major league sport. Great food. Beautiful lakes. Lots of places to bike or hike. The Mall of America if you like to shop.

And outstate Minnesota has a ton of lakes - including the North Shore of Lake Superior. Fishing and golfing are big.

Just make a season commitment - lots of winter stuff to do in the winter and lots of summer stuff to do in the summer - and who in the heck knows in the spring and fall.
