Naturally I am looking for the best deal possible so I am looking for advice: should I book as far in advance as possible, or does it make a difference?

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. (How's that for helpful?)

A lot depends on the time of year you're traveling. If you go off season you're likely to get a terrific rate even without a discount. If you have to travel peak season, you may want to check with a travel agency that checks constantly for discounts.

Certainly your airfare is likely to be less expensive if you book early.

Most hotels let you cancel hotel reservations up to the day of arrival. I book our accomodations when I know our dates, then keep checking back for better offers. If a lower rate turns up, I make a new reservation and cancel the old one. On some vacations, I've booked and cancelled 3 or 4 times as the rate kept dropping.
