I am a beginner at all this, quickly becoming a pro thanks to all you guys and your excellent advice and tips. I thank you all, once again!

I am at a loss deciding when to book our airfare for our Aug 2005 trip or when to start looking for deals (I'd like to keep it at around $150 or less round trip per ticket-4 Adults & 4 Children going.

Does anyone have a strategy???

Many will say to use priceline services, but then you lose flexibility with booking your times.
I book directly on the airline web site 3 months in advance. That way, I pick the time and seats.
The best idea is to book early morning flights, that way they won't be delayed, and you'll arrive in the afternoon.
As to the best price, it's hard to say. Prices go up and down, so if you log on, check the fares, and the price seems good, grab it now before it goes up. If it drops after you book it, don't feel bad, it's happened to me, but most of the time, they go up as the date approaches.

What I did was sign up for Travelocity Fare watchers. They email me everytime the airline prices change. That way I can get an idea of what a good rate is when I do try and book. The only problem is several airlines like Southwest do not book through travelocity so you need to check them independently or sign up for their email deals.

I also am subscribed to travelocity. This gives me a good idea of what the normal fare is and what a "good" fare is.

We always travel during the first week in August and the past two years, I have found that about a month before we travel (early July) the rates have gone down substantially. But it only lasts for a few hours, so you have to be diligent and check every day, very early in the morning. Often, by the time the travelocity's e-mail got to me, the fares had already changed back to the higher amount. But when I see a low fare on one discount website, I check all the others. (Lowestfare.com, expedia, orbitz, qixo, etc.). Often the fares are within a few dollars of each other, but some sites may have better times and connections.

From where I live, the normal discounted fare (one you can get on a regular basis) is usually around $200.00 give or take $20.00.

Last year, we flew into Tampa for $89.00 RT (we were getting a rental car anyway), found on Lowestfare.com and this past August, we flew into MCO for $138.00 RT from Travelocity. I have found that both of these times, the flights were cheaper than what was listed on hotwire. But I had been looking at the fares daily, and knew that this was the lowest they had been in months and so grabbed them.

Since you have a while before your trip, check the websites daily and get an idea of what the flights are usually running. You will begin to see a pattern. Last year, in our area, it seemed that some of the airlines always discounted the lowest early on Thursday mornings. This year, it was all over the board, but usually mid to late week. But, by checking often, you should begin to get a good feel for what will be a really low price and whether you should grab it or gamble that it will go down lower later.

Hope this helps,

Hi I'm new here and I dont know if this helps or not but...I signed up to get emails on specials from Air Tran and Southwest. Yeah I know, a lot of people have issues with some of the low cost carriers but so far I've been lucky (knocking on wood).
You get an email before the deals are released to the general public, so you know when the sales are. Usually you have a limited time to purchase the tickets and you have to purchase them online.

Those are the only restrictions I have come across so far but for example From SW I purchased two rt tickets from BUF to MCO for a total of 266.00, and a friend got 2 tickets rt from PHL to MCO for @ 250.00 total thru Airtran. Hope this info helps!

I agree with pwmini. I swear by SouthWest and have never had a problem with them... And they're just plain FUN too! ;)
Right now, SW's prices for BWI to MCO Round Trip run about $136 (yep, including taxes and fees) under the "Internet Special" and even might be a tad cheaper under the "Promotional Fares".

So yep, definitely do-able! Have a great time!:jester:

if you go with southwest be sure to keep checking the rates! ( as in everyday ) they dont always email the sales out. if your flights are on sale then call southwest directly and they will change your rate. they credit the difference for you to use at a later date ... free of charge!! i did this and saved a total of $50 for my Dh and I.
