Just took a day trip to a beach today and both of my children (ages 15 and 13) got extremely burned:sad1:

I used Banana Boast spray sunscreen with protection 50

I don not know if I got a bad batch or what.....I re- applied several times.

They never appeard that red when we were at the beach but when we got home tonight....ouch.

I feel horrible for them, but I really did have them apply the sunscreen several times and even helped them to make sure they were not missing any spots.

What do you find works best?

Thanks

The thing to remember is that sunblock only helps so much. If you are going to be our for hours, you HAVE to put on clothing like a teeshirt or something, or Zinc oxide on your face. The sunblock doesn't last forever. They swim, they sweat, the block comes of and is only effective for a certain amount of time.

Poor dears. I know it hurts, sorry mom.

I don't have great luck with sprays by themselves. I do better to start with a lotion at least 20 minutes before exposure then reapply spray every 90mins to 2 hours, more if I am sweating a lot or in the water, and always let it dry thoroughly. I also reapply tue lotion to the parts of my body that burn easier a few times. You must make sure the spray goes on dry skin (unless buying the new ones designed for wet skin).

We use Blue Lizard, but it's not spray. It's super hard to find in this area though and rather pricey, but I've been really happy with it. DD has been in the pool or at the beach every day for the last few weeks and we're still sunburn-free. I douse her in it before we head out, re-apply when we get there and every hour or so when she's in the water. So far, so good.

We use Ombrelle. I find it has the best protection, and they even have one especially for kids.

Sorry they got burnt. I was on antibiotics last week, and got burnt badly also :(
Aloe is great for relief.

I second Ombrelle, I am really pale white and it was the one the doc suggested, and sure enough it works great!

We've had a lot of luck with Coppertone Sport Spray...water & sweat proof. Works for them jumping in and out of the water.

I think the key is that they run right back into the water after application. I make mine sit under the umbrella for 10 minutes every hour when I'm around. He also wears a surf shirt for rash and sun protection and long board shorts so his exposure is limited. Oh, and my kid has long hair so his scalp isn't too exposed. I do use a waterproof block that the other surfers use and I make him reapply each hour because they only guarantee 45 minutes of blockage when in the water. The worst he's ever burned was under his eyes where he was wiping the water out of his eyes constantly so rubbing off that sunblock so he uses zinc oxide there.

I'm super fair skinned and as I was growing up my mom always put BullFrog Sunscreen on me. I think the lotion works best. Growing up in Florida there was potential to get a LOT of bad burns. I've only had 2-3 bad burns, thank goodness.

Make sure you give the lotion/spray plenty of time to dry before going outside/getting in the water!

I used Netrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch sun screen for myself at WDW two weeks ago (SPF 70) and that stuff WORKED!!! That type doesn't come in "kids" form but they do have a baby sun block (spf 60) and a wet skin kid's block (spf 70) that you can spray on. I haven't tried those but if they work as well as the kind I tried, you'll be happy with it.

Also, be sure to put any sunscreen on at least 30 minutes prior to exposure, it takes time for it to "activate" and start working.

I don't find sprays all that effective for major sun exposure-for playing in the backyard it is fine but at the lake, lotion-and lots of it works much better.

I agree. For a day at the beach, we'd start with a lotion and supplement with spray.
