i got my faux tan too. i put it on on friday night and woke up with orangy knees. that always happens to me when i use faux tanner. i mix it in with a lot of lotion though now. the smell is nice at first, but like all fake tanners, it stinks later on, although, it's not as bad as some of the ones i've tried. at least my legs look a little tanner. i think i just need to learn how to use it properly. any other helpful hints?
I don't think it smells bad after awhile-or maybe I just never noticed it past my body splash and perfume!! (I find that Warm Vanilla Sugar from Bath & Body Works blends well with the smell of the Faux Tan).
I still have some trouble with knees and ankles. I find that it sucks in faster in the spots that are the driest - knees, ankles and elbows!! Sometimes in the winter I have that problem around my knuckles, too. I exfoliate a lot, and moisturize the heck out of those spots. What helps the most is 2 things: I'll apply the lotion to my legs in 2 phases - lower half and upper half. When I do the bottom half, I put a layer on from just above the ankle to just below the knee and I don't rub it all in - I let it sit there for a minute (to let some of the color soak in a little longer). This will also let some of the lotion soak in. Then I'll rub it in to even out the color and I'll smear a thin layer of what's left over my feet/ankles and knees. I'd say it gets about half of what my lower leg gets. Then I do my upper leg, avoiding my knee. After it soaks in for a minute I smear a little over my knee. By this time you can see if any spots are a little dark around your ankles. If you see anything that's too dark, I use the wet washcloth from the shower that morning to rub out any dark spots.
It's really not as much work as it sounds. You get in a routine of how you apply the lotion, zip back over the dark spots and you're done.
1) Wear latex gloves when putting on the lotion to keep your palms from getting dark. Especially at first. Then once you're quicker at applying it you can use bare palms.
2) Once you're comfortable with applying the lotion fairly quickly, use a BAR of Dial soap to wash off palms. (2-3 washes with the bar and all color is gone).
3) Lotion will soak into dry skin a lot faster and more unevenly than moisturized skin. Exfoliate and moisturize!!!
4) If you apply a layer of lotion and don't rub rub rub it in, it will leave a lot more color on your skin.
5) A 2nd application the following day will even out any lighter spots to give you more even coverage.
6) Any boo-boos or a color you don't like can be lightened very quickly with a good washcloth (not exfoliating scrub). Pair that with Dial bar soap and it's a lethal combination.
7) Don't forget to do your ears and the behind your ears and neck.
8) Google "applying sunless tanning lotion" - there's a couple sites that give excellent tips for application.
