DS will be going to a day camp this summer. He's never been to camp before. The website says no sandals and I have no idea what type of shoes would be best. Any suggestions?

My dd8 usually wears crocs to camp. She has also worn Lands End water sneakers (I think they are called the trekker) for days when they did water activities.

Watch the Crocs. I run a summer program, and we don't allow open toed sandals or Crocs. This is very common.

My kids were supposed to wear sneakers during most of the day at camp. Crocs were allowed for wearing around the pool only. No sandals anywhere.

My kids are supposed to wear sneakers. My daughter always takes her crocs to wear to pools, fountains, etc. My son wears sneakers always (obviously goes barefoot at water places.) My kids' camp uses city buses and goes all over town. They have to carry their backpacks full of stuff most places which is why my son doesn't like to carry extra shoes.

Most camps only allow tennis (closed toe) shoes. That is the safest shoes for you child anyway. They may also need some type of water/pool shoes as well.

Crocs don't have great traction either. What about something like Keens? They are a combo of closed toed, but like a sandal as there are openings. They have great traction and can be worn in the water. They will dry faster than sneakers, and antimicrobacterial (sorry, brain stopped working-the stuff that prevents growth of gunk and odor).

I hate camps that don't allow sandals (Crocs I understand, they don't have good traction, but a full-foot sport sandal is another animal entirely.)

When we run into this, what DS wears is amphibious sneakers. The Land's End Trekker versions are a decent affordable one. Whatever you get, just be sure to let them dry in the sun at the end of every day -- they can get VERY smelly if you let them stay wet for extended periods of time.

The camp I work at is sneakers only - it's a safety issue. We allow sandals or crocs only on pool days.

The Day Camps that my daughter has attended always require sneakers (and socks that cover the ankles, because of ticks).

Stride Rite makes a great summer shoes for kids. It is a closed toe sandal but like sneaker material and not open and flimsy like a sandal. They have two velcro straps going across the top of the foot and the toes are covered w/ a sneaker, mesh material and there is a strap around the ankle in the back.

There are a few different colors and styles and they have girls too.
