My hair feels so dry, brittle, stringy etc. It used to feel so soft before but I'm assuming as I'm getting older (51), it's just going downhill? IDK.

Are there any products out there to bring it back to life..........to feel nice and soft again? Shampoo? Conditioner? Other products?

First of all, it could be build up of product or minerals from your water. I would try a clarifying shampoo and use it no more than twice a month. If you color your hair, I would do an apple cider vinegar rinse instead of clarifying shampoo.

Then use a conditioning hair mask. But leave it on for at least an hour, under a shower cap and towel turban. (The heat will help your hair absorb more moisture.) For an inexpensive, easy to find hair mask I like L'oreal's Elvive damage erasing balm in the yellow tub.

Depending on your hair history (color, daily heat styling, chemical treatments) a bond restructuring treatment such as Olaplex 3 might also help.

I like Renpure products and Pantene products.

I like the Pantene shampoo and conditioner all in one for busy mornings.

I have a similar issue that's cropped up the last few years (I'm also 51). I use the Love Beauty Planet stuff. I alternate between a few varieties, because if I use one kind of shampoo on my hair all the time, it stops working well.
I really like the Coconut Oil & Chamomile Silky Bliss version; it makes my hair the softest! They also have a Rose Water & Vitamin B3 Wavy Hair and a Melon Water for Straight Hair Hyaluronic line that really works well, but those are hard to find now; it could be they discontinued them (which would make me very very sad). I use the Tea Tree Oil & Vetiver/Eucalyptus every few weeks, to clear things up. In the past I've used the Black Tea Kombucha and Red Ginger, and it works great. The Lilac smells amazing, and works to soften as well.

They have a Butterfly Pea Flower version I want to get, but it's always out of stock when I am shopping!

I do not like the Coconut Water & Mimosa Flower version; they seem to dry my hair out; same with the Sun Kissed Manadarin line. There is another of the hyaluronic line, I can't recall the scent, that I didn't like as much, because of the scent, but it worked the best to soften my hair.

I have not tried the Muumuu Rose (not a big rose fan), Avocado & Aquacate Mango (it just came out), Silky Peony (just came out), Yling Ylang (dislike scent); Lavendar (allergic); or White Jasmine (allergic).

The only other hair cleaners I use are bar soap/conditioners. I have some from Basin that I really like for traveling (Oatmeal Milk & Honey; or Hair Food). I bought some new ones to try from Naples Soap Company; they just got here yesterday, so when I wash next time, I will give them a shot. They don't seem to have as much scent as the Basin ones, though. Figured I'd give them a try; they are a smaller FL based business.

Try Johnson&Johnson baby shampoo. It’s all I use because I don’t like all the chemicals in shampoo. When my wife’s hair was feeling dry and stringy she tried using it and within a week her hair was back to normal. She’s in her 60’s.

Noooooo to clarifying shampoo on exceptionally dry hair. That stuff will strip your hair something astonishing and leave it feeling like straw.

How often do you wash your hair? That may largely be the issue. I've always had dry hair and wash mine only every two weeks at most, in winter maybe once a month. Even then, I simply rinse thoroughly and massage my scalp, rarely using any shampoo. When I've gotten into dust and feel my hair is actually dirty, I simply rinse thoroughly.

Doesn't make any sense anymore to me to remove what little natural oil my hair has and then try to replace some with conditioner. That doesn't help anything but the manufacturers' profit margin, IMO.

If your hair is curly, check out the Curly Girl (no poo) method. I only use shampoo when they cut my hair, and I solely use conditioner (maybe 2-3 times a week). Been about 6-7 years now. My hair is fine, but curly, and it's really helped (I'm 55).

You should have some bloodwork done (your thyroid checked). A hair change like this is sometimes the first symptom of endocrine disorder and/or nutritional deficiency.

I get my bloodwork done regularly and so far everything seems fine. I am on a low dose of thyroid meds (been a few years now).
