We have been going to OC NJ for years. We however can never find a REALLY good place to get seafood. Or actually a good restaurant. We've been to the Crab Trap in Sommer's Point, have tried several in Wildwood.

We're thinking of trying the Lobster House in Cape May this year, not sure for a late lunch or dinner. Not sure if the drive is going to be worth it.

We rent a house and have pretty much resorted to eating in for most meals. But still wanting to find a place to have a nice dinner.

Any recommendations???

We always run into the problem of good restaurants in OCNJ. We were just there last week and the only place we really "went out" to eat was at the Island Grill downtown. During the weekends they have a safari menu (Ostrich, kangaroo, etc.) which is awesome!

For our seafood fix we usually do take-out from Mike's twice during the week. The Crab Trap we've done sooo many times over the years that we haven't been there in awhile.

If you try some new places, please be sure to check back in and post them here. I'm always up for some new eats down the shore! :thumbsup2

Our favorite place at the Jersey Shore is Sylvesters. It is located at 21st and 5th avenue in Avalon. It may be a little drive but it is worth it. Flounder, scallops, crab cakes - I can never decide which of my favorites to get so we end up eating there several times while we are at the shore. One word of caution, go early or be prepared for a line. Their website:http://www.sylvesters-avalon.com/index.htm

Lobster House is good seafood. Not gourmet but good. I always enjoy my meal there. Have you tried Obidiahs or the Tuckahoe Inn. Both are right over 34th Street bridge. I would recommend Tuckahoe Inn. In Somers Pt. there is Sandi Pointe, not far from Crab Trap. I haven't tried it yet but would like to soon. Also, in OC on the boardwalk at 4th St. is Oves and I've heard they have some good dinners and it is open air dining right on the boards overlooking the ocean.

There used to be a place , and I can't remember the name, but it had very good seafood, but mostly fried seafood type dishes, if I recall.
I don't think it was over the causeway into ocean city, I think it was out on the mainland, but I could be wrong, its been awhile.
anyone know what I am talking about? I would remember the name if I heard it.

My in-laws live down in Cape May. My father-in-law, an AVID fisherman, always goes to the Lobster House. He says it's the best fresh seafood down the shore.

The seafood at Lobster House is always very fresh. It's about a 30-45 min. drive from OC but don't go on a weekend-traffic and a long wait. I would suggest going early. Another place I forgot about is Smittys, its a clam bar (and lots more) right on the bay in Somers Pt and it's BYOB. Great chowders. Very popular. We love the place.

We were just in Sea Isle for the past week......we went to the Lobster House in Cape May, but we bought fresh seafood from them and cooked it at home. We went to the Ugly Mug (in Cape May) and I had wanted clams, they were $11.00 for a dozen. At the Lobster House they were under $4.00 for a dozen. So I had to cook them myself, but it was well worth the savings! Make the drive worth it and take in the sites of Cape May.

aaahhh the Ugly Mug brings back some memories!!!

ok it came to me
Campbells Seafood

is it still in Ocean City?

No, unfortunately Campbell's left a few years back and is now home to more cookie cutter million dollar homes. :sad1: They really were the best. I can't believe how many places I've seen disappear in OCNJ...good places too! Campbell's, Greene's...such a shame.

Didn't get to go this year, but another good place over in Somer's Point is Smith's (Smitty's) Clam Bar. I could sit there for hours and eat several dozen littlenecks!

We have been to Smitty's Clam bar, but were looking for something not as casual. We did like it there though

We tried Gregory's last year, while I enjoyed my meal, I'm not sure everyone was thrilled

You would think being on the coast there would be plenty of really good ones, I have always assumed that OC itself is laking due to being a dry town, but that shouldn't be an excuse for serving good food.

So we tried the Lobster House....opens at 4:30 for dinner so we got there at 4:15, let me just say if we hadn't the wait would have been LONG, we were a party of 9.

I couldn't believe how long the line was at 4:15. The food was by far the best we've had down the shore. We've tried the Crab Trap several times, Gregory's in Sommers Point and a few others. I would highly recommend it Everything we had was very good, no complaints other than the calimari was just average, nothing special.

Next time we'd like to try the outside raw bar. Looked very casual and good at the same time.

It was nice to have an early dinner than head into town to walk around

Glad to hear that the food was good. Dh and I are planning to visit Cape May next month and I had not been to Lobster HOuse for a while

Ok, you have all made me hungry!!! Another vote for the Lobster House - we love sitting on the dock and watching the boats while enjoying fresh seafood and a cold adult beverage. Obidiah's is another favorite, especially their lobster bisque soup and we also get take out from Mike's. I'm hoping for more suggestions too.

This isn't really what you are asking but if you are spending a week or so down the shore and you want to take a drive, there is a restaurant called Harpoon Henry's in Cape May area, near the ferry. They have a most delicious sandwich called Henry's fish sandwich which is a tender white fish with a light, airy breading and some type of red pepper (not hot) sauce that is sooo good & tasty.

How about The Inlet over the bridge into Somers Point? Inside seating and deck seating. The food was pretty good when I was there a few weeks ago but I don't eat seafood so I can't personally vouch for it. Dining companions thought it was pretty good tho. Happy hour 3-7 with $2 rum runners helps :)

We LOVE the Inlet!!!

There used to be a very good restaurant near there, called Stumpo's, but I believe it closed :guilty:

The Deauville Inn just over the bridge into Strathmere has fantastic cream of crab soup and extremely good crab salad. We make it a point to get there at least a few times each summer when we're at my parents house in Sea Isle.

Also, if you don't mind a bit of a drive, Menz's on Rt. 47 in Rio Grande always has wonderful food, and the history and decor of the restaurant are very unusual. If you have children with you, some of the kids' meals are served on a frisbee or in a pail, they all get a huge ice pop for dessert, and with some kids' meals a small bag to choose $0.50 of candy from the penny candy store in the restaurant. Everyone gets a lollipop when they leave. When I was a kids, Mr. Menz sat in his wheelchair in the lobby, and asked everyone if they cleaned their plate before giving them their lollipop.
