I have to help find/buy a car for my daughter and she has decided on the Honda Civic with the leather interior. There are dozens of dealerships within one hour of me.

What's the best strategy to get the best price?

What's the best price I should expect on a loaded model?

Should we wait another month or two?

We've already visited several dealers and considered other similar cars. This is the car that made the cut. She loves it. There are loads of them available right now in this area.

Best price advice: wait till the end of the month or closer to year's end if possible. Have your financing in place. Stay clear of the "extras" the try to sell you such as prepaid oil changes etc....

Get the Consumer Reports wholesale price printout. That way you know what the dealer's final cost is. Few folks realize that "dealer cost" really isn't what it costs the dealer, since the automakers send them what is called a holdback after they sell the car. They can sell a car below dealer cost and still make money.
Negotiate up from the wholesale price, not down from the sticker price.
I'd start about $200 over wholesale. If their are lots in stock at area dealers, I would think $200-$500 over wholesale should be enough. Don't be afraid to point out that you have noticed their are a lot of them on their lot and on other Honda dealership lots, and don't be afraid to walk out if you are not happy. I agree about going on the last day of the month.

Just email all the dealers in your radius and tell them you plan on buying from whomever gives you the best price. If you had a favourite dealer, you could always take the best price you get to them and let them know you prefer to purchase from them if they can beat it.

In re: get your own financing. You may not want to do this. The dealership makes $$ off the financing, so if you tell them the rate that you want and they can do it, you may be able to get a little bit more off the car.

Dependent that your daughter has excellent credit, of course.

My husband just did this in May for our son who purchased a new civic ex. We did our homework. Got the prices from edmunds, consumer reports and KBB. Then we got the costco out the door price and then got the truecar out the door price. Truecar beat Costco by a few hundred dollars. Honda has some great sales this time of the year and I'm guessing they still have a low 0.9%.
The dealer was a costco dealer and had a sister dealer that was a true car dealer so they matched the price. It was nice and easy and the out the door price was very good. Good luck.

I'm not sure what Truecar is. Thank you for sharing. Off to google truecar!

We just bought a Honda pilot. We did the USAA pricing. If you are a member of USAA it is a great deal. It was a few thousand UNDER factory invoice due to the holdbacks. USAA seems to be linked with truecar. Definitely have this info in hand when you go and play one dealer off another. Tell them you can get the same deal from so and so. So what else can they give you

go to truecar dot com and see what that model and options is selling for in your zipcode. That will give you an idea of the price range. Go from there.
