Had nothing better to do on Saturday so I decided to take my 14 year old DS into Philly to experience the different cheese steaks that the City of Brotherly Love had to offer. We visited a number of places such as the famous Pat's, King of Steaks and Genos across the street (both located where 9th Street crosses Wharton & Passyunk Ave.) We then went to Jimmys Steaks located on South Street and 4th ave. After that it was on to Ricks at the Reading Terminal Market and then finally to a little corner deli called Cosmi's at the intersection of 8th and Dickenson. By the way, we only ate a small part of each sandwich so we could experience all of the shops as they cooked them fresh. I must say that the leftovers were really good too.

Each place has their own history and ways of making the perfect Philly cheese steak. Some had whole slices of meat on their sandwiches while others chopped it up. You can have with or without onions. You have a choice of American, Provolone or Cheese Whiz for your sandwich.

And, after careful observation and tasting, the winner of the best Philly Cheese Steak goes to.....................Cosmi's deli. Hands down the very best tasting cheese steak I have ever had. Of course, if there is a little deli like Cosmi's out there, I'm sure there are other little mom and pop neighborhood stores that I have not found yet.

Hope you all have a good lunch.

Since you live in P-burg you might get out to try the place that my dad swears has the best cheesesteaks...LaBella's. It's in Easton at Butler and i believe 14th St. They are really juicy though, so if you like a dry steak this might not be the place for you. Some other members of my family say the Brass Rail's are better. That's in Allentown though. ditto on the good lunch.

I live in South Philly and i can't wait to try Cosmi's. I don't live too far from there, about 12 blocks. Sounds good. Its hard to find the best cheesesteaks around here. Our favorite is a small deli around our neighborhood.

JKMastalski, that's what I'm talking about. Those little out of the way deli's sometimes have the best food. If you can, rate Cosmi's with your neighborhood shop and let me know the outcome. I'm only 1 and a half hours away so if you can give me the address of your neighborhood deli I'll be sure to put it on my list.

Irmillen, I've been to both of the places you mention. LaBella's had a very tasty sandwich but there was something about their bread. I just think Philly has better access to the best bread for their steaks. The Brass Rail I have been to many times and I think they come closest to a Philly Cheese Steak in these here parts. They also chop their steak into little pieces while grilling and have very good fried onions.

Looks like it's time for lunch.

You have the benefit of living in Philly and getting the original cheesesteaks. Alas, I live in Kansas and I don't have that benefit. We do have a place here call Pepperjax grill. It is only a block from where I work and they have AWESOME philly steak sandwiches. I can't imagine the orginals can be any better. YUMMY!
