Best Motion Sickness OTC med?

Maybe he could try some of these at home before you go, to see if they make him feel drowsy, or if they help in the car etc. at a convenient time, like on a weekend. It won't be an exact simulation, but he can know if anything makes him feel drowsy.

Maybe you could post this in the theme parks board or somewhere else but it does not belong in the restaurants thread thats for sure

Our family uses Motioneaze we purchase at Walmart. It's an herbal extract oil that you put behind your ears & it really helps with motion sickness. I've even used it after already being sick & the nausea went away. The down side might be the eucalyptus smell of the oil, but it doesn't bother us. We apply it before riding buses/planes or while waiting in line to ride.

Great idea! I was just thinking I should go ahead and get a few and see which one sits well with him.

Thank you for being so kind. I was going to post this in the Tips page, but this one gets more traffic and I'm here the most. Sorry for the inconvenience.

None of them worked for me. I tried Dramamine and Bonine and meclizine. Didn't work. I tried the patch (had a one day old one from the DCL) and I still got really ill on Space Mt. I just avoid anything that spins, goes up and down, jerks back and forth.

What works for one person may not work for the next. Sea Bands and Ginger do absolutely nothing for me but you'll hear other people swear by them. My motion sickness is pretty severe. I can't be a passenger in a car for long and must be in the front seat. I can't even swing on a swing set.

I take Bonine (brand name for Meclizine) every day when I'm in Disney and it definitely takes the edge off for me. I still feel some mild nausea but I also still avoid rides that I'm pretty sure would be too much for me. I have mild tolerable nausea still on Test Track, 7DMT, Dumbo and a few others. I can do BTMRR but it is a little bothersome at night. Soarin' I'm totally fine on with meds.

I had the patch once after gallbladder surgery. Well really I had quite a few rounds of multiple meds and the patch was one of the many things they tried. Not sure what worked or if it was a combo of everything but I had some side effects afterwards like dizziness that has made me worry about using the patch again. Again some people do swear by it.

Whatever he tries I'd give it a shot before your trip so he knows if it works for him and if he has any unwanted side effects.

Good luck!

This thread is exactly what I needed! I can get queasy if I use my mouse's scroll wheel too quickly, so yeah my motion sickness is pretty bad. I'll have to give some of these things a try.

I swear by the patch. I am the same as others who have developed motion sickness the older I get. I told my PCP about it and she recommended the patches. The work wonders for me and you only have to change them out every couple of days! I couldn't recommend it more!!

I used Meclizine when I was pregnant and it worked well but made me really drowsy. Does it make you drowsy? And do you still have to ask for it behind the pharmacy counter? You had to ask for it when I took it, they didn't just have it out. Thanks!
I take it just before bed so that i own't be drowsy. it's good for 24 hours. I order mine from amazon.

Another vote here for Bonine. I tried Dramamine but that seemed to make me drowsy. Did not have that issue with Bonine.

My husband gets horrible motion sickness that usually morphs into vertigo which then means we have to go sit in Nemo and Friends while he recovers ( I am talking to YOU Expedition Everest!!) and then is pretty much a bench sitter the remainder of the day.
The first 2 trips he went on, we had him using seabands, bonine, taking Zyrtec for OTC and he did ok but it was a lot of remembering. The last trip he went with Sea-Bands and RX Scopolamine for ease of use. I find that having chewing gum available helps too.

The patch didn't help me one bit.

Several years ago I invested in a ReliefBand (NOT Seabands) which is a band that is worn by stunt pilots and cruse workers. It is the best thing I've ever bought. The band is like a Tens unit for the wrist, and gives a pulse vibration every couple of seconds and it over rides any signal to your brain that could make you dizzy or queasy. No drowsy side effects, you put it on when you need it and take it off when you don't. I purchased mine on Ebay, I now own 3 because everyone in my family wanted to use mine. Make sure you buy the one that has a replaceable battery.

here's a link to some on ebay:

THIS!!! My son is a flight student and when his instructor found out he got motion sickness with flying (go figure) he recommended the ReliefBand. Now my son swears by it too!

I use meclizine. It can make me drowsy in cars or if I'm not actively doing something but it doesn't make me just fall asleep. I've never had a problem going all day on one. Taking it at night is a good tip but I don't think it really lasts 24 hours. That said, I only use one a day.

I also carry ginger gum. I don't love the taste but it really does seem to work. I found SeaBands pretty uncomfortable. Good luck finding him something!

I agree wholeheartedly the patch is a godsend and made all the difference for me on this vacation where I was able to ride every ride at Universal for three days.

I have always had motion sickness- no back of car, even inn front passengers seat cannot turn my head back to deal with kids without feeling sick. Stars Tours after 15 seconds had to close my eyes because i was feeling sick.

I got the patch because I was desperate to ride Forbidden Journey and Gringott's -thought at best it would take the edge off hoping i could eat and walk around with DH and DD the rest of the day.

But when I rode those rides I felt perfectly normal and no side effects from the patch.

I could have cried with happiness and relief and rode all those simulator rides at Universal without a problem!

One thing I will caution with the patch is that if you have any tendencies towards anxiety or depression, they can really mess with your mood. My sister who gets really really seasick was so miserable on our cruise that she said she'd rather deal with the seasickness. Her mood was drastically improved about 12 hours after she took it off.
My husband took it off because as someone mentioned previously it made him dopey and he couldn't read the menu. The non patch wearers at the table had to read the menu for the patch wearers.
My husband really prefers non drowsy bonine for theme parks. Always taken a good hour BEFORE trying any activity that might make him ill. If you take it after you've already ridden something that made you feel sick, it's pretty useless.

And then there is my 13 year old who experienced sleep paralysis (fairly rare) with dramamine and couldn't wake himself up from a nap. It only lasted a little bit but it terrified him enough that he'll never use it again.

There's so many different reactions in individuals for each drug that it's worth testing at home IMO.

Yes, blurry vision is a side effect if you wear the patch too many days.

I'll second the poster who mentioned Motioneaze

https://motioneaze.com/

Got the suggestion from someone else here and it has helped my kids immensely!!! The Bonine is also very helpful. A combination of the two and you're good to go!
